Remove un-owned champions from ARAM pool.

It is freaking ridiculous how many ARAM matches in a row I get stuck with some free-week champion.

I swear to all the gods I don't believe in it feels like ARAM is actually more likely to give you champions you don't own.

I have 32 champions that I own at current, and oftentimes some of them are the in the free week cycle, and yet it's a ludicrous hassle to actually get one of them.

I'm not playing ARAM to play some champion I don't even own in a player-match.

I'm playing ARAM to play as a random champion THAT I ACTUALLY OWN and can earn things (mastery, key frags) for in the All-Mid style. If I want to try out the free-week champions, that's an activity for bot matches and Blind Pick.

Frankly I think ADAM and ABAM should be made into actual modes, but to start with at least remove the free-week champions from the ARAM pool. Please.

~~Heck, if you make ADAM and ABAM actual modes, then ARAM could include the entire champion pool if you wanted. ~~(I make that final point, although I am aware of why you don't want to use the entire pool.)

And yes, I understand that there are already people with "ARAM only accounts" and yes, I understand that that problem would be even worse without free week champs being in the pool.

The good thing that is ability for us not using ARAM only accounts to limit the pool to champions we own would vastly outweigh the bad-ish thing that is the ability for ARAM only's to do the same.

Or no, deal with it. If anything, it should unlock every single champion in the game. That's the whole point of random.

I'd be cool with a random mode that was every champion, so long as there was also a random mode that was only the ones you own.

However, it has been stated before that Riot doesn't want to make ARAM the entire champion pool because "That would be giving people free immediate access to them all."

I don't get why so many people disagree, it's a really good idea. "All Random" doesn't mean that you have to learn every single champion so you know what you are doing.

JavelinJoe3 votes

but if you only play who you own, it is not ALL random. it is LIMITED random. If anything, every champion should be up for grabs by anyone, even if FOTW or unowned.

To quote myself because why not:

Oh and the "All" means "all the players in the match", not "all the champions in the game"

This comment is wrong.

ARAM (all random all mid) was actually a player-designed game mode that was played on summoners rift, with rules similar to what is now forced in the permanent mode. However the "all" in "all random" meant that all players had to use the random button to select a champion, not that all champions were available.

However I'd imagine there was a free rotation when this was a player-made mode, so keeping in that tradition free rotation champions should be available? I agree with his premise though - as a person who used to play ARAM it sucked getting champions I had no idea how to play (especially when they were not ADCs as that was my main role). I don't even really understand people's problems with the ARAM-only accounts (eventually shouldn't their elo rise sufficiently high that you don't meet them anymore?)(besides they earn rerolls much slower, so it sort of balances out) but there is this overwhelming community hate against it, so this thread was sort of pointless.

ARAM-only accounts have inflated MMR because they're (almost) always going to get a strong ARAM champ. There's no reason they'd be confined to a certain MMR bracket.

Anyway, there's two problems that come to mind with ARAM-only accounts.

  1. Fairness. People who own more than the "optimal" number of champs are essentially penalized due to having increased chances of getting a weak champ. Unlike every other game mode in League, investing more into your account and owning more champs is not strictly beneficial.
  2. Stagnation. It's tiresome seeing the same champs every game. There's a reason Riot regularly tries to rotate power picks in SR.

Fair enough.

On the Fairness point though, ARAM is a fun game-mode, it isn't ranked play. Each individual game should be fair, at least that's what I meant by my comment saying that the ARAM-only accounts with inflated MMR will basically have the same win-chance as the rest of us.

On the stagnation front, rerolls and dodging push to that as much as ARAM only accounts do. Having more champions gets you reroll points faster, so it helps there too. It's a very fair point regardless though, if even 20% of ARAM-games-played are by ARAM-only-accounts then you're going to see a lot of the top 10-20 ARAM champions. Despite going on ARAM binges I don't feel like I ever ran in to too many of the same champions, but I don't get bored with the SR metas either.

Minarde1 votes

I'd like ranked ARAM, but that's out of scope here. Anyway, each individual ARAM game isn't necessarily fair, since champs aren't all equal. Bad luck can result in a massive team comp advantage for one team. Games should be fair over the long run once luck balances out, but ARAM-only accounts skew that too. It's irksome and counter-intuitive that the "optimal" way to play ARAM is to specifically make an account just for ARAM.

Minarde2 votes

Because, currently, there's one counter to "getting an undesired champ" (i.e. rerolls) and one counter to ARAM-only accounts (i.e. free-week champs). Disabling the free-week rotation would thus likely have a bigger impact on ARAM-only accounts than people getting champs they don't like. Plus, there's the additional consequence of requiring ten owned champs prior to playing ARAM.

As for why ARAM-only accounts are an issue, they make ARAM feel stale. You know how Riot tries to nerf dominant picks in SR to avoid having people run into the same champs game after game? Unfortunately, Riot doesn't do that for ARAM. The champs that were strong months/years ago are mostly the same champs that are strong now. It gets tiresome running into the same few champs game after game. Furthermore, there's the issue of fairness. Owning more champs somewhat penalizes players in ARAM because there's a larger chance of rolling a weaker champ. It's an awkward situation where spending more on your account makes it harder to win games.

Are you trolling.

Teh Song1 votes

Wanting to use what I own instead of what I don't is so distant from trolling your question doesn't even work.

And yes, I understand that there are already people with "ARAM only accounts" and yes, I understand that that problem would be even worse without free week champs being in the pool.

thats like the whole points of aram, getting a random champion

Teh Song1 votes

that you own. A random champion that you own.

"Randomness in my random game mode!? Inconceivable!!!"

In all seriousness many people want a mode that is just click play and have random mash ups from every champ in game. I am one of these people. The closest thing this game has is ARAM. The best version of this idea was in my WC3 days of DOTA with AREM (All random easy mode) it literally handed you a random champ from character pool gave you a few hundred bonus gold to help offset some bad early game power/matchups and away you went to play a game of 5v5 random awesome sauce.

If this game added AREM version of SR that is probably the only thing I would play.

Oh and I also actually own EVERY champ already so using the old but sales argument doesn't always apply.

Make every single champ unlocked is the better fix.

Your suggestion would make the issue of Aram only accounts worse.

Teh Song1 votes

I wish people would read at least some of what's on threads before replying to them.

ARAM only accounts have already been addressed, and I consider the downside that is those people to be outweighed by the positive change for the rest of us.

Theorchero2 votes

No, fuck people who make aram only accounts

Teh Song1 votes

Once again, already addressed.

I do wish people would read the entirety of a post before replying.

My last to paragraphs in the OP if you would.

I've also said (not in the op) that they really ought to have one that's limited and one that's the entire roster.

Although Riot doesn't want to open the entire roster.

JavelinJoe1 votes

What are ADAM and ABAM anyways?

Teh Song1 votes

All-Draft-All-Mid & All-Blind-All Mid.

Sometimes they pop up in customs, but then you get wood division playing with challengers. Need to be real modes with matchmaking.

WoonStruck1 votes

You are the problem with ARAM.

Teh Song1 votes

I honestly don't understand how there's enough people who disagree for me to have a negative net vote value. It makes perfect sense that some people prefer it this way, but I just don't see how the people who agree with me on this could potentially not be a huge majority.

I don't get it, I just don't.

Eedat3 votes

Because there is a metric shit ton of people who make accounts for ARAM only. They make an account and only buy champions that do well in ARAM so they have an advantage in the game thats supposed to be RANDOM. Removing FTP champs will only make these accounts even worse

Teh Song2 votes

I already addressed that:

"And yes, I understand that there are already people with "ARAM only accounts" and yes, I understand that that problem would be even worse without free week champs being in the pool.

bad-ish thing that is the ability for ARAM only's to do the same

The issue of ARAM only accounts far outweighs the few people who cry about the FTP champs. Need proof? Look how hard your thread got downvoted into oblivion

You, however, are sitting at -19 lol

That thread could be a troll or just a poorly worded rant (like this might be I suppose).

Have you never seen those troll posts that get into negative hundreds?

I don't know what exactly the cuttoff is where the post gets deleted/hidden, but I've seen some large negative numbers before.

Why is it that so many of the opinions I have about so many things end up being so very minority opinions, even when they seem so obvious that I'd almost think of them as fact before learning everyone disagrees.......

Minarde2 votes

Possibly because you didn't make a particularly convincing argument here. There's no mention of the existing tool for dealing with an undesired champ (i.e. rerolls), and the issue of ARAM-only accounts was just glossed over.

Teh Song1 votes

Well that's just the thing: I didn't think I'd have to convince anyone. This premise is so plain and given to me that I thought people just needed the thought presented to them, because they already agreed and they just hadn't actually had the thought yet.

It's like I'm saying 2+2=4 but the majority of responses are people saying 2+2=5. That's what this feels like.

Minarde2 votes

Sure, but you just continued with the assumption that everyone agreed with you despite people disagreeing with you.

A more fitting analogy would be you claiming "the sky is red," while a bunch of people are saying "the sky is blue." Both statements are true, and the discussion isn't going to progress without acknowledging that.
