League of Legends 2019: The Age of Entitlement

FederationFurry··4 votes·2,735 views

Has anyone else noticed that as the times have changed, so to has League of Legends. We went from an age at the games conception where kits were simplistic and designed to be more specialised in function (For example, if you wanted MR, you would pick old Galio etc and he was weaker against AD champs) to the current age which includes champions being redesigned to do pretty much everything.

Recent champions have this in spades, ever since the successful release of Yasuo, what some people wanted and others did not. It seems that every champion these days has to have some kind of gimmick that breaks the game rather then being designed around a core strength.

Lets compare Annie to Zoe as an example.

Both are mages. Annie was always taken for her stun and powerful CC and Burst but the trade off is that you cannot really do anything else. She has no mobility and can easily be collapsed on when her stun is down.

On the other hand, Zoe has no real clear focus or period of weakness. She is provided with mobility, a CC that is not a "charge" to balance it but one skillshot and a Q with a massive burst potential. Her "stealing summoner spells" ability feels very tacked on and does not seem to flow from her core identity.

The same can be said for Neeko and Yuumi.

I do not think the designs are a problem, I just think they are an example of the age that we current live in. The Entitlement Generation (as some people call it) flows through these champions as you do not need to really give up anything to play these. With Annie, you need to accept that you will have no mobility and their is a clear core weakness in her kit.

Champions don't seem to be built with weaknesses in mind these days.

Why pretend that Annie wasn't despised when she was actually good let alone top tier because of how reliable she was?

They made these flexible and higher counterplay designs entirely as a response to player base complaints around their original designs

Please do not spread misinformation. Zoe does not "steal summoner spells", she retrieves them. If you use your Flash, and Zoe collects the Spell Shard, do you no longer have your Flash? Of course not. You still have it, so nothing was stolen from you.

I stand corrected then, doesn't change the point, its a gimmick, nothing more.

Idk, not having a ability until a summoner spell is used by you or the enemy is a bit iffy. You gotta throw in power to the accessible abilities.

Also, Zoe's development name was dubbed "Mirror Mage" and she was originally going to be more like Sylas or have a wall that would reflect projectiles back.

The one ability burst seems like a much better option.

Does anyone else find it strange that they're calling 2019 the "age of entitlement" yet only mention one Champion from 2019?

FederationFurry1 votes

The argument applies to Yuumi, Sylas, Qiyana etc...

Even reworked champions have gotten this treatment, like Mordekaiser

DGAGAAsharpAGD3 votes

If new champs don't have weaknesses, why are they still played side by side with many old champs.

FederationFurry3 votes

Because many old champions have been power crept up so they can keep up with modern designs.

DGAGAAsharpAGD2 votes

Exemple?

FederationFurry3 votes

Mordekaiser

DGAGAAsharpAGD3 votes

No, give me exemple of old champ that was powercrept while keeping his kit.

Morde is new champ, I asked for old one.

FederationFurry3 votes

Morde is an old champ that has been reworked with clear power creep. Feel free to go look it up.

DGAGAAsharpAGD3 votes

No, give me an exemple of old kit, that was power crept to keep with new ones.

Mordes kit is new, I want old one.

FederationFurry2 votes

Swain - His kit is basically the same but was power crept with additional features like the whole soul ripping thing and he's getting additional changes soon to up his power.

nm10101 votes

Swain is actually one of the worst examples of this. He lost several features of his old kit and was limited in multiple ways. A much better example would've been Irelia or Akali. Both of them kept the essence of their old kit, but with added features on top of it.

FederationFurry1 votes

Ok then, lets use them instead. I'm mainly a mage player and I find Swain more power then his old kit but I guess he lost a lot of his AOE damage with the rework. So yes, Irelia and Akali work better.

nm10101 votes

More powerful for sure, but his early game playstyle definitely changed and he did lose things like his damage amp. If we take Akali for example,

  • She kept her hybrid scaling and healing, but it was easier to use.
  • Her old q bonus damage became a passive with speed ups and no target limiting. It is also gained a lower cool down effectively.
  • Her w was basically the same, but the new one was stronger with a completely new (and broken) mechanic known as obscured.
  • Her old e was turned into her ranged cone q and she got a new e that was an entirely power creeped ability.
  • Her R gained a stun and execute damage in exchange for a "real" cool down and having to hit e for one of the gap closers. It also is no longer targeted, so Akali had much more freedom of mobility.
  • She also got buffs to her AD base and AD growth.

She lost nothing other than some hp + regen and Akali was arguably LESS power creeped than Irelia.

Nice analysis... this is completely true.

DGAGAAsharpAGD3 votes

Jesus, you are so incapable of doing what I asked you to do, that I'm going to prove your point by myself.

Vayne - buffs that maked her strong as fuck Riven - buffs, buffs and buffs over years Thresh - kept in meta since his realese Sivir Nasus Kennen Sona Lee sin etc.

I asked you for old kits, Mord nor Swain kept their kits, they were power crept by changes, not by numbers, that's what I asked for...

Came here to argue over something you were right about, but I'm more angry now...

FederationFurry3 votes

Redesigned kits are still BASED on the champions original kit so I would still count that as power creep

ChaosReyn1 votes

"Came here to argue, and you were right, but fuck you anyway cause you're bad." xD

This is funny to me. :P

I'll fix it for you: the biggest numbers powercreep imo is probably in Nasus. Used to, you had to grind stacks for over half the game before you could do half of what he does now. Currently, you literally need 1 item and 100+ stacks to start flooring pretty much anyone in a 1v1, and even HORRIBLE Nasus players can get their first item and 100+ stacks by 15 minutes. The skilled Nasus players start 1v3s at 15 minutes and you have no hope past 25.

Swain has literally nothing from pre-rework. Everything was changed. That’s not to say he wasn’t pushed from sustained damage to burst and early game to late game.

nm10103 votes

Have you watched LCS recently? It is incredibly rare for an "old" design style champion to ever get picked, unless they have been updated, have a super strong niche (lux support currently falls into this and the next category), or were powercreeped throughout the years.

Edit: And how many new releases have seen nerf after nerf when Riot is done making their money?

DGAGAAsharpAGD3 votes

Jayce, Kennen, J4, Leesin, Gragas, Olaf, Sivir, Ez, Thresh and few others. But sure, you can say that all of them were power crept.

FederationFurry1 votes

Most of them have ALWAYS been powerful or high on the tier list. I don't really see why JarvanIV should remove half your health just for pressing R.

nm10103 votes

have a super strong niche

Bully top laners (Niche) - Jayce, Kennen Early-Mid game Jungle pressure (Niche) - J4, Leesin, Olaf Support with a "get out of jail free" card (Niche) - Thresh Updated - Gragas, Sivir (also waveclear adc niche), Ezreal

When was the last time a Fiddle jungle was picked? Or Annie Mid? Sure they'll get updated/buffed again, but that is just proving the point. The game has been severely power creeped through the years.

DuskDaUmbreon2 votes

"Bully top laners" is hardly niche when that's about a third of what the toplane roster does.

You might as well say "being a late game champ" is a niche.

nm10103 votes

They are only picked because of the balance cycle and Neeko being banned. Next round of nerfs when they want a ranged bully top laner it will be Gnar. If the meta changes then none of them will be picked or if a new ranged top laner got released, they would probably be picked. That is by definition "niche", they are picked to fill a role and not for their individual strengths.

DuskDaUmbreon2 votes

Okay, but that role is incredibly large.

"Being a lane bully" is such a general role that definitely doesn't qualify as a niche. It's literally just being strong at a stage in the game.

Now, if there was something unusual to that, such as being a lane bully that scales into late-game, that's a niche. But just being a lane bully isn't a niche any more than "Is AA-based" or "Being a burst champion" are niches.

nm10103 votes

I really didn’t think I would have to point out the obvious, but what do kennen, jayce, and neeko all have in common?

Hint: It is something most other top laners don’t have.

Are you trolling? Like WTF. Zoe HAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CLEAREST FOCUSES IN THE WHILE GAME you pick zoe because she can easily pick people off that is it. You lose aoe cc, sustain damage, aoe damage, peel, etc. Like wtf are you talking about "these champions as you do not need to really give up anything to play these." That show you shouldn't be talking about this since that is SO FUCKING WRONG it hurts my head.

LIKE ZOE HAS MORE COUNTER PLAY THEN ANNIE stop being biased please. Zoe has doesn't have a lot of mobility if you think she does you fucking lying. Annie is bad not because she has to little it's the opposite she has too MUCH point and click cc,peel, self peel, single target burst damage, aoe burst damage, poke, and aoe cc like that is MUCH MORE THEN ZOE and unlike zoe you can't dodge her abilities.

THE REASON THE MAJORITY OF CHAMPIONS ARE REWORK IS BECAUSE THERE KITS ARE DO TO MUCH. Akali could not be buffed without being broken, Aatrox could not be buffed without him being broken, mundo unkillable damage dealer when he is good.

Like old champions were general champions that's why they are bad since riot can't buff them without them being too good.

So stop with this bs you're just showing your biased as fuck. Like champions are designed around core strengths zoe's kit based around her q and not much else.

FederationFurry1 votes

Riot shill alert... I didn't read it past the first line. Don't worry, I'm sure the admin will pat you on the head and feed you a cookie.

boricCentaur12 votes

Basically you said I'm right. Like again proving you are nothing but a troll saying stuff for attention since your post could not be more wrong. Since you're just wrong and UNLIKE YOU I USED PROOF whereas you have nothing.

FederationFurry1 votes

Shill alert... you arn't going to be an admin so learn to think for yourself.

boricCentaur11 votes

Funny SINCE YOU HAVE NO ARGUMENT AT ALL, YOU GIVE NO PROOF AT ALL, AND YOU'RE JUST CALLING PEOPLE SHILLS AS A DEFENSE LOL.

I give fucking reasons and examples how is not that thinking? Not thinking would just be saying some bs with no proof like what you did!

You are just mad league is not stat check champions anymore.

KalokasIsMyDaddy3 votes

But Zoe does have a clear focus. You pick her to kill enemies fast, and that's just about what you can do with her. She doesn't have extremely reliable CC, and her mobility depends on what her teammates and enemies pick for summoner spells. Her ult is not exactly mobility, she just temporarily warps out of her place.

EvolutionÑerd1 votes

Nowadays every new champion has an ability to escape like a flash, dash or something that's what I don't like.

DuskDaUmbreon1 votes

Right...So what's the difference between being designed around a new mechanic and an old one?

What even makes them new ones really? Yasuo's W is hardly new, it's basically a spellshield.

You say Yuumi has no weakness, but I'd definitely say that being tied for the lowest base health in the game is definitely a weakness, and that having zero ways to force a disengage is also a weakness. No on-demand hard CC either.

Zoe's weakness is that she dies if you get on top of her. She's hardly mobile, since her R is just temporarily being somewhere else. Again, no on-demand hard CC.
