Rengar; a Gameplay Update

Stacona··2 votes·416 views

Rengar is a champion with no middle ground, and what I mean by this is that he is either completely useless when behind and just feeds OR when he is ahead is super oppressive one shoting people from thin air. Neither of these creates a good, healthy gameplay for Rengar because one scenario is really bad for the Rengar player and the other is really bad for when against Rengar.

So to move Rengar from being in one extreme to the next based on the game will require some changes; the biggest problem areas when against Rengar is his current ultimate and passive (NOT the ferocity and empowered abilities to clarify), and the thing that has Rengar hard to come back from behind is a lack of utility to do so.

Basic Attack Range: 125 units Movement: 350 units per second

The Hunter's Ferocity (Passive): Rengar's abilities that hit an enemy grants one point of Ferocity, up to a maximum of 5 points at one time. At 5 points of Ferocity Rengar's next basic ability will be empowered and will consume 5 points of Ferocity, empowered abilities do not share cooldowns.

Rengar hunts for trophies attached to large monsters and enemy champions, every unit only has one of these trophies for the entirety of the game, Rengar gets the trophy if he directly executes or assists in the execute of the unit.

Your team's large monsters grant +2 attack damage per trophy. Enemy team's large monsters and Scuttle Crabs grant +3 attack damage per trophy. Enemy champions grant +6 attack damage per trophy.

Savage Predator (Q): Cooldown: 16/14/12/10/8 seconds; Range: 525 units Passive: Rengar's basic attacks deal 2/2.5/3/3.5/4% of his target's missing health as bonus physical damage on-hit (max 150/175/200/225/250 damage against monsters).

Active: Rengar's next basic attack is empowered gaining 400 units range causing him to leap at his target and dealing 40/60/80/100/120 bonus physical damage.

EMPOWERED Savage Predator: Rengar gains 66%(+3% per level) bonus attack speed for 3 seconds after he leaps.

Battle Roar (W): Static Cooldown: 1 second; Cost: 1 Charge; Range: 500 units Rengar lets out a mighty roar around him to deal 60/80/100/120/140(+40%AP) magic damage, 50% increased damage to non-champions, every large unit struck heals Rengar for 30/35/40/45/50(+10%AP) health. If Battle Roar hits an enemy champion Rengar gains 40% bonus movement speed for 2 seconds.

Rengar gains a charge every 18/16/14/12/10 seconds, up to a maximum of 3 charges at one time.

EMPOWERED Battle Roar: Battle Roar does not consume a charge and grants Rengar 36(+3 per level) bonus armor and 24(+2 per level) bonus magic resist for 3 seconds if it hits a large enemy unit.

Bola Strike (E): Static Cooldown: 0.5 second; Cost: 1 Charge; Range: 1000 units Rengar throws a bola in the target direction to deal 60/85/110/135/160(+50%Bonus AD) physical damage to the first enemy struck and slowing it down by 40/45/50/55/60% for 1.25 seconds, if the enemy is already slowed by a bola then it roots it in place for the same duration instead.

Rengar gains a charge every 26/22/18/14/10 seconds, up to a maximum of 3 charges at one time.

EMPOWERED Bola Strike: Bola Strike does not consume a charge and the slow/root duration increases to 1.75 seconds.

Thrill of the Hunt (R): Cooldown: 160/130/100 seconds; Range: Global Rengar channels for 1.5 seconds, if he takes champion or turret damage this channel is interrupted and the ability goes on a short cooldown, afterwards he jumps to the target area that is within brush. Upon arrival into the brush Rengar gains 100/140/180% out of combat bonus movement speed for 10 seconds that decays over the duration.

Rengar gains a full 5 points of Ferocity upon a successful channel.

completely useless when behind and just feeds OR when he is ahead is super oppressive

Idk where you are getting this information.. honestly, ive played a lot of rengar and very rarely do i ever feel USELESS when behind. Its more often than not because of my own play rather than the champion itself. You can feel useless on a lot of champions, like going 0/11/0 on maokai. Doesnt matter what champion you are talking about.

I cant even comment on the rest of your thread because you have a weak argument to begin with.

Stacona1 votes

Maokai should never mass feed, because you know you scale on him and are extremely useful late game as a bodyguard; so even a "feeding" Maokai is still very strong unless you do something retarded like full AP maokai since he is a tank

Rengar is not like this however, so when he is ahead he one shots people with no counter play , and when behind he falls further and further behind and can never come back

Dreadlocks1 votes

i literally just saw a maokai feed those numbers in a high plat game yesterday on a stream building normal and legitimately failing. Its not the champ, its the player. And Rengar isnt useless when behind... You dont even have experience playing Rengar so how can you even make such assumptions? Against popular strategy i dont mind going tanky on rengar if i fall behind, cuz quite franky bruiser rengar is fucking amazing too.

"This one guy played an off role and had a bad day of League thus this is what it is like 100% of the time"

The difference in arguments here buddy is that I am going off a broad spectrum from multiple games and multiple players and not a 1 game data base; someone who mains Rengar with over 300 games should know what to do when he falls behind otherwise he is not learning at all--- but you recognize that Rengar is solo queue and Rengar in an organized team is awful unless you go full chinese chaotic warfare where the other team is also chinese because teams know how to not get Rengar snowballing since they can stick together and without that snowball Rengar is completely deadweight and feeds his ass off and does nothing

Dreadlocks1 votes

So you're argument is, rengar is harder to learn. Gotcha lol.

Stacona1 votes

Rengar isn't hard to learn, he is a pretty simple champion with a mastery curve, but the point is there is a difference between someone who played a champion for less than 10 games and over 300 games

Dreadlocks1 votes

Again.. what is the point to ur argument? I'm completely missing it.

Stacona1 votes

Why are you still talking? You have zero argument buddy and all you are doing is trying to redirect the question back at me, come back when you actually have an argument because I have no idea what you are trying to get at. Also pretty sure you have no point whatsoever you are trying to make which makes any of this even more useless.

Dreadlocks1 votes

Exactly lol you have no point in your argument. Your argument is this: Rengar is useless when people dont know what they are doing on the champion, but other champions are easier to play and even when behind, the champion is so simple that people can still be useful.

What a terrible argument lol.

Stacona1 votes

No... Rengar is useless when behind when the opposition knows what they are doing, you can never say that about someone like Maokai because Maokai will always be useful since he has a crap ton of utility and peel, you just are no where near as tanky.

But Rengar HAS to use the chaos of solo queue to get snowballing or be in a game with 10 Chinese players and THEN he will succeed, this is not good gameplay. And in the solo queue or a noob atmosphere is very toxic because he jumps from invisibility and kills you with zero counter play to react. His leap needs to be restricted in someway like a cooldown, specifically a cooldown because infinite super range leaps just because he is in brush is not good at all and no where near balanced.

Dreadlocks1 votes

I guess i dont agree with your judgement.. Rengar doesn't HAVE to build dmg to be useful. And thats my main argument. People choose to keep going dmg when they are behind and then struggle to 1 shot. Just because people dont take full advantage of his kit and utility doesnt mean its the champion that needs fixing but rather the people building him.

khorney1 votes

i mean tbh he is no hypercarry countless games ive gone 15 and 4 and lose becuase i cant split push becuase my team will get smo0ked

Dreadlocks1 votes

Generally you just have to make a smarter engage. However, what many fail to realize is that rengar capitalizes on others mistakes, which is why mid-late game it can be difficult to get the pick you need to close out a game. When people (adc/apc) specially fed ones, decide to roam away from their team mid-late game to catch a wave of farm, it makes Rengar's job easier.

khorney1 votes

i know how to play renagr trust me its not liek i can split push when my team cant 4v4 and tehre is another post that explains the failure of the nerfs and more nerfs to renagr

Dreadlocks1 votes

I'm just saying, it depends on the situation -_- sometimes u can afford to splitpush, others not so much. I don't think rengar deserves a nerf to his 1 shot potential just because ppl are whining about it on the boards, i felt like i had more 1 shot potential last season with the help of Brutilizer and old Last Whisper, and people didnt bitch about him half as much then.

khorney1 votes

i know i tend to go crit if they have lots of squishys or lifesteal which is funny they cant kill u and i run ghost cd boots and distortion so i can spam ghost basically

Stacona1 votes

One shoting is not a good game mechanic, but for Rengar when he can one shot it means he comes out of thin air literally and one-shots you with zero time to react at all

a fed Rengar with pure damage items will still be able to one-shot; but in that scenario what I want to fix is allowing the opponent to properly react which means the stealth needs to go, but the ultimate still allows him a way into the fight when paired with his leap; i also wanted to remove the infinite leaps which is why his q and passive got combined together (also toned back his leap range, but it no longer being locked to brush makes him a better jungler to gank pre-6)

Rengar always had a bad gameplay to him, nothing changed since his release

Dreadlocks1 votes

Why should riot change a champion just because its something you dont like. Clearly a lot of people like playing him as he has 1 of the highest play rates in the game. Hes a lot of fun. Just like how Veigar is fun to you, stunning multiple people, or hell just pressing R on a squishy target late game is fun to you. I dont think thats healthy to the game either but not me or anyone else who hates being 1 shot by a point and click spell is crying about it on the forums.

Stacona1 votes

Because I said I never liked Rengar, that's it, you TOTALLY got me >.>

I play support Veigar, and one-shoting is not good for the game, I even said that they need to deal with his ultimate in some way- support veigar is better for the game because he doesn't one shot- but Veigar also doesn't appear out of thin air

All I did was made Rengar better to go against and offer counterplay by allowing the opponent to properly react to him; I DID NOT change what Rengar can do which is an all-in lion assassin jumping on your face and wants to rip it to pieces--- you are complaining about me making him a better jungler, both jungling and ganking, and his take away is that your opponent can at least see you coming and react better

So do not say I am "whining and crying" when I have a logical and well thought out post, especially when you are riding on your own emotions. So take a moment to calm down so you can think rationally, and then if you have anything to add on the subject that can precisely say what you like or dislike about the original idea feel free to share them.

Dreadlocks1 votes

Has nothing to do about my emotions lol, rengar isnt being nerfed next patch, nor has riot halted the game for him to get a rework. Rengar is fine.. hes not like release skarner or buffed up darius, Hes literally just a killing machine.

Stacona1 votes

Release Skarner was insanely underpowered, what the fuck are you smoking buddy. Skarner got buffed multiple times before getting nerfs. They also buffed Darius after his rework the next patch.

Rengar also has gotten a rework before because of his poor gameplay, which they did not fix at all, keeping his leap out of thin air ultimate and adding "!" does nothing, a skill shot root is worthless when he is point blank and it cannot be dodged. So my changes actually fix the original problems which still remain, and once the problems get fixed we can then grant power to Rengar, but we cannot do that at this time. Also this has nothing to do with what happened this patch, last patch, or next patch; this is a long term post to fix the core issues and then fine tune him later, when I made this post has zero relevance of Rengar's state because he cannot be tuned with number changes between patches, this is to fix the core issue so he can be number tuned in the future; whether the changes make him too weak or too strong initially does not matter because if the core issues are fixed he can get follow ups in following patches and when the meta changes to either hurt Rengar or help Rengar.

Dreadlocks1 votes

Okay so you think rengar's kit is just out-right broken in which case we are never going to find a middle ground lol. oh well.

alfavhunter1 votes

The CD on his Q destroyed any early ferocity generation

CD is way to long

It would be better if you made the jump attacked to his E

Stacona1 votes

he gets more ferocity cause damaging with E and W grants ferocity with multiple charges, so the Q ferocity is lowered, but the W and E ferocity went way up; so there will be more empowered abilities and not less

so Q will be the leap to get you in, and then W hitting a champion grants a speed buff to stay in the fight on top of a slow/root on E--- cooldown increase for Q i gave % missing health on-hit to compensate to help with jungling and assassination -- i focused on him being an AD assassin/jungler
