If you're buying QSS and Zed is killing you despite the active then you've either bought it too early (his damage doesn't fall off versus your ability to stay alive until somewhat late in the game) or your team/yourself failed to play around him well enough. Cleansing his ult will sometimes save you from him only if you've got something to mitigate his basic abilities (make use of your lifesteal, have a shield, use Heal, CC him when he goes in, etc) so it's not enough to hit the active and ignore him.
QSS is a strong buy against him, there's no denying it. But if he doesn't need ult to kill you or you don't have any way to defend yourself from him then yes, it's a pointless purchase. Better off with Death's Dance in that case, or a Sterak's.
