The title

I'd like to be able to switch between different Marksman quickly or different Mages quickly to test damage between champions in the same class.

Load a new champion.... without loading the game again? No, that's not how it works. When you switch champions the game has to load them. That's what the Loading screen is for. I guess it's starting over with less steps?

DrCyanide2 votes

It looks like the OP's idea was that switching champions would go back to the loading screen with that champion selected, by passing the process of hitting Play -> Training -> Practice Tool -> Start -> Select Champion/Runes/Masteries -> Lock In -> Wait 11 seconds for the countdown.

That part could be skipped leaving the loading screen for both methods, but you'd have to build some sort of Champion/Skin/Runes/Mastery select into the practice tool, and that just doesn't feel worth it compared to other features (like moving target dummies or bots that fire user defined combos).

Spice POWAH2 votes

what if they made it so you could select up to 5 champs, load all of them at once and then be able to swap between controlling them or something? that might be more plausible/easier.

If it's possible without a hundred years loading screen, then yes!

awdaf5 votes

Hundred years? All you would have to do is type a command like /switchchamp "insert champion name" And it will reset the game automatically in a loading screen with the new champ.

I guess I have a different definition of "quickly" than you. Mb.

This is what the boards actually think implementing features into old code is.

Think he's talking from the user perspective. But, ending a game to have it restart with a new champion isn't worth implementing as a player can do that on their own. It would really only take some code and a file to store the new load settings and have it auto call after the game is "ended" to restart it. Complete waste of time to do as players can manually do it with what 5 clicks and waiting for the champ select timers. That's what, a 40s process if you're quick on selecting champ, runes, and masteries? The allowing league to offload and onload assets method could actually be useful on the other hand, though it would be a bitch. Then again, it could get riot off their asses and fix the bugs of this spaghetti code client [game client] by making a new one. While we're at it smoking the super extra special jumbo industrial size peace pipe, maybe riot will undo some of their less favored reworks.

time to explain to you how programs work: when you start a game, in the "loading time", your computer (or laptop), looks inside itself and searches for your champion and everyone elses in that game. then it downloads data from the server about the map.

depending on your pc, searching data and loading it might take little or not time next, the active memory about your champions is stored in your RAMs.

Now, here's the issue with your request. There are around 120 champions in this game. And in any given game, you usually load 10 of them. That's why, if your desired feature or petition were to be approved. The loading time will be about 10 times longer than your current one for a 5v5 game. OR, about 50-60 times longer than your current 1v1 bot game. Lets say you load that screen in 1 second. It will now take you 1 minute to load. Lets say you normally load the practice game in 10 seconds, now it will take you 10 minutes to load the game. Lets say you normally load the practice game in 20 seconds, now it will take you 20 minutes to load the game.

Aside from this, all the champion information will be stored in your RAMs. You will need to have enough space there to store data about all the champions. So, without like 6-16gb rams, I don't see that happening.

Do you see the issue with your desire or suggestion? How long does it take you to load the practice game now? Do you have even have the specs for such a feature?

Because trust me bro. I want a car that can fly, drive on land and navigate on water. And look good. And cost around 5000 euros or less. But I'm not getting that. Even right now, air only hoverboards cost around 10k usd. Not even considering the fuel price. Or a VR game similar to SAO's AoL or Gun Game world. Sometimes, what you want, its simply, not realistic based on the technology we have today.

Fegone2 votes

Lol there's so much wrong with your explanation, I don't even know where to start XD Loading a champion in loading screen takes literally a fraction of a second, loading more would insignificantly increase that. Champion data is minimal, u don't need that much Ram.

One thing is correct: Sometimes, what you want, its simply, not realistic based on the technology we have today.

I'm not sure but I assume a bigger issue is Riot's Spaghetti Coding of LeL. So say you're a certain champ that can create certain object (e.g. Teemo shrooms) , then switch, then what happens to shrooms? What happens if shrooms damage / kill something? Who does it attribute the damage / kill to? Teemo? No longer in game. Lots of cases that aren't particularly hard to take care of, but it's so many that they're prone to create bugs.

you do realize that the loading champions into the map its the same as "including" libraries in C/Java/etc. so, the waiting time depends on pc. Sure, if its something minimal it will take 0.00001 seconds.

But its not minimal. During loading screen you "load" the map, the champion models, the particles for their skills and so on. That's why it takes time. For some people less, for some people more. The more you champions in the game, the more you "load" its simple :)

Riot's code is from 2007 or 2008. I'm very sure there's no optimization done for mass amount of champions on rift as preloaded. So, the loading screen will last quite some time.

Fegone1 votes

Uhm... no.. it's not the same as including libraries in programming. Including libraries in programming enables you to create certain objects, or call certain functions from a precompiled file. It is not physically creating any objects in memory just because you include them.

If all the loading screen depended on was loading the champions, your own loading time would be the same every single time, wouldn't you agree? Still, every time I play, I get different times. Sometimes it takes me 4 seconds to reach 100%, sometimes it takes me 20 seconds. But it wouldn't take any time at all to load another 100 champions, we're not in the 80's any more and LoL does not use 200k polygon champions.

There are many reasons your loading times are different every time. Assets loading is just a tiny part of it, but there are numerous service calls your LoL client makes to the server in order to connect, register itself, etc. and services don't always perform at the same rate. That's what makes up the majority of your loading time.

Serika Zero1 votes

you are aware that programmers use

#ifndef my_header #define my_header . . code . . #endif

right? to avoid multiple includes of their own code and that's for little things, a champion here is not a little thing

Fegone1 votes

Not sure how that has anything to do with what we're discussing here.

ifdef and ifndef are used to avoid multiple includes of the same code. Correct. Code. Not Data. We're discussing data here, the data needed to be loaded for models etc. If you think that the textures and polygon data in programming is loaded using or inside of an ifndef or ifdef , you have not the slightest idea about programming XD

Serika Zero1 votes

genius, what is data? data is code >.>

yes, we should stop talking you are probably in high school and only did like 4 projects so far with 3d modeling >.> murica school system, expensive as fuck, producing the same thing as everywhere else

Fegone1 votes

Data is code? DATA IS CODE?!?!?!?

So a database stores code, not... data? So data on your hard drive, like pictures and music... is actually executable code? Bwahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Ok, I get it, you're a comedian. You win XD

R31W1NG1 votes

Your teemo example is likely invalid as 1 For All indicates league can attribute to a player beyond just x champion. It's still an idea which would require significant redesigning of the spaghetti in other regards though.

Fegone1 votes

That's what I mean. I'm not saying it's not possible. But it requires some significant work. And I doubt Riot is willing to put that in just for that feature to switch champions ingame.

Then why not allow us to have (up to) the 10 that are typically loaded anyway - pre-load them so that you can swap within those (up to) ten and learn multiple champions in the same session - a bit of a compromise if you will?

That would work in Dota2 but not league currently with how selecting units work.

Serika Zero1 votes

this would be a very good compromise, and I think riot could code it in 2-4 months if they chose to do it your idea is a very good one ^^

DragonShea2 votes

Dota 2 has it. so why not LoL?

DJMason884 votes

Well Dota 2 completely flipflops leagues system of getting into a game. Players connect first, then you get to select your hero/champion. And this is all in 1 client, there is no launcher for Dota 2.

That works a little differently and its also not loading in the main map. I do not know if they updated it recently the last I used that was when the monkey king was released.

Salron2 votes

I don't think that's how the game is coded to work

Yaśuo Main2 votes

That is actually very hard to implement in. Instead of just 10 champions the game has to load, its all of them. Practice tool is going to easily top every other mode for the award of " the longest loading time ever. "

Nickssaa2 votes

Due to League's Spaghetti Code, it would be impossible to do. This is why Lol will always be technologically behind other games like Dota 2

Monkey D Luffy2 votes

While they're at it, remove the brief 0.5 second cooldown on abilities and allow us to invite friends.

Sukishoo1 votes

Practice tool is a new addition that was shipped with the bare essentials. It has much room for things to be added.

Only Play Darius1 votes

Maybe make it so that you can pick a list of up to 10 champions that can be switched around once you get into game, I don't think you can switch to every champion on-demand like in DOTA due to the way the game engine is loaded.

FilDaFunk1 votes

From what rito have written about reducing elementalist lux forms into a file (describing how the game takes each file), I doubt it is possible to swap between champs.

R31W1NG1 votes

If you would remember the olden days of league where it loaded every sound file in the game, You would remember that leagues coding is balls and load times were insanely high on potatoes. As is a Toaster can still make you wait 4:50 on getting into a match. Your petition will never be sensible to implement unless riot were to make an entirely new game engine and call it ROFL, LMAO, LMFAO, ROFLMAO, or ROFLMFAO. As is League loads resources to memory, and then plays. A better petition would be for you to invite more players and for the CDR to behave like URF but at 100% instead of this reset everything to 1 nonsense.

F0zzyBear1 votes

Maybe you could at least pick five champions in Champ Select since the game is used to loading up five characters for one team? Seems like it could be reasonably done.

deoje2991 votes

If they could make this possible, it would be amazing.
