The Biggest Flaw With LoL Is That It Expects 5 Strangers To Work Together.

For probably the last 3 or 4 years now, Riot Games has based everything (balance, champion design, etc) around team play. Many of the abilities and concepts which players used in the past to "solo play" have been reworked, toned down, or flat out removed. Ranging anywhere from raw stats, to items, champions, to dragons and barons, many things that Riot has adjusted have been ensuring that players are required to play with their team to be successful. These days, when one player gets ahead, it's very likely the entire team is ahead, and then the latter... When one player is behind, it's more than usually the case that their entire team is behind.

This mentality that Riot has been pushing is unhealthy, and creates quite a lot of frustration. Some champions have many things (most modern reworks) and then other older champions are put off or intentionally left weak. A good way to picture this better is to simply compare old Warwick with the reworked version. Before he was reworked, Warwick was a solo play champion. He farmed, got his items, tanked up, and tried to make plays when his ultimate was available. He had a lot of down time between ultimates, which enabled good counter play for enemies. Post re-work, now Warwick has a dash on his heal, gains large global movement speed, has damage reduction and a fear, and his ultimate has even more range than previously. All of these things being added to enable Warwick to get involved more with his team. Most champions who haven't been reworked recently are on par with old Warwick, yet left competing with the likes of newer champions and re-works on scale with new Warwick.

I've been playing quite a lot of Middle lane (and Jungle) recently, simply because as a former Top Lane player, who was a Riven main, I began to notice the effects of Riot's "Team Play" mentality on Top lane in particular. Originally, Riven was a skirmisher who was meant to be able to fight multiple melee enemies, and previously excelled at split pushing against most other Top Lane champions. These days, Riven struggles against the majority of the champion pool 1v1. Split pushing is worthless now with the empowered re-call on baron. Not to mention if your team loses a fight while you are split pushing, the game usually becomes unmanageable, as Riven is reduced to a Flash stun bot with not much other usage when behind and forced to group with her team. This same thing can be said about many other Top lane champions inside the current Season 8 meta. Due to this, winning lane means you almost are required to give up lane as a Top lane and roam around to help your team. Long gone are the days of bringing the enemy team to you.

The struggle of a roaming laner is even more real. There are so many times where I ping, type in the chat, and clearly communicate to my team when I'm trying to make a nice roam towards their lane. The fact is however, a lot of players don't want to play with you. Many times when I make an attempt to help my teammates it backfires because they simply do not want to participate or don't want me to come down to their lane. This often leads to deaths, lost gold being away from lane that can't be made up, and levels lost that can't be easily regained. Even with the best communication in the world, there's nothing you can accomplish when the other players on your team do not want to work with you.

As bad as they seemed back in the day, I really wish Riot would bring back many of the things that seemed to dissuade team play. Things like aura's on items, self buffs on champions, point and click abilities. I'm sure many of you would disagree, but just stop and think for a minute -- Would you rather know being the better player that you have the tools at your disposal to attempt carrying, or would you rather cross your fingers and pray that the Galio on your team understands how to roam and is willing to use his ultimate on you?

The fact is, not everyone cares about you and you don't care about everyone out there either. We're all playing with other players that we've never met before and there is no way of knowing if you can trust that your team will be there. Teamwork is the biggest flaw and frustration for both Seasons 7 and 8. It's always been present to an extent, but the past two Seasons have been where Riot has enforced and drilled the nails into the coffin the most. These changes are NOT positive, despite what everyone is brain washed to believe, and are why amazing players like Faker are struggling more than ever in League of Legends.

Sometimes teamwork is a good thing, however forced teamwork is never a good thing.

The flaw with league is that riot decides that after you go on a winning spree you deserve to go on a losing spree. Look at random players win graphs

Its always UP and DOWN your skill just does not go down if your playing in the same elo.

I don't wholly agree with that particular statement, but I do agree that there are some major problems with the matchmaking system. MMR increases more quickly than you gain LP and rank up. While perhaps not 100% accurate, you can easily see this with any MMR estimation website. Winning about 6 games in a row pushes you 3 to 4 divisions higher MMR than your rank. Basically, your games are getting more difficult, which means you begin losing more (or at least have more chance of losing).

This is what gives the appearance of what players argue about (forced 50% win rate), but that's simply not true. You have to remember that just because the rank of the players you get matched with isn't changing, doesn't mean their MMR's are all the same. Two players at the same rank can be two drastically different MMR's. Maybe it doesn't seem like it, but you ARE matched against better players the more you begin winning.

The real issues with the system currently are bottom division players (Division V), who can't demote but don't belong to that division (Which is a problem because they are also ruining lower tier games), oddities (which mostly come from duo'ing) such as higher ranked players ending up in a lower MMR match, and then lastly placement matches putting players in Tiers where they do not belong (Silver II player who should have been placed at Bronze V). Two of these three problems appear to be getting some attention for next season, but I'm still concerned about how severely duo'ing between a Division I of one tier and Division V of the tier below affects matchmaking.

I've seen Gold I players in Bronze matches, it's a pretty severe issue. If you are Gold I and duo with a Silver V at Bronze MMR, then you still get stuck in a Bronze match... The same goes for anywhere, and that creates a miserable time for everyone in that game.

I reached gold 4 then I went on a massive lose streak and demoted back to gold 5. I lost lane in a few games but in the majority I went even or won lane yet ended up losing because every single time bot, mid or jungle would go something like 1/10 in the first few minutes. The point is if my mmr is higher because of winning shouldn't I get better teammates with better opponents? All I see is a series of unwinnable games because suddenly every lane would go out of their minds feeding...this happened on my other account as well around the same elo.

hmm i only played rankeds like 3 seasons ago, but I had similar experience, but instead of getting the feeling that it started matching me against better opponents, I got the feeling the system was evening it out by matching me with worse team mates, i.e. "you won 5 games in a row, lets see how you can carry this guy who lost 5 games in a row"

I don't see how this is an issue with LOL in particular. Yes riot goes through phases where it's easier/harder for someone to solo-carry their teams, but at the end of the day, this is a team based game.

I've never played any of those seriously (tried all but not much), so I can't speak in great detail, but you are missing what I'm actually talking about.

League of Legends has ALWAYS been a 5v5 "team game". This has never changed since the game started.

What I am speaking of now is, Riot's pushing forcing players to play with each other to be successful. More and more champions are being gutted and re-worked to where they require their team in order to make plays. Split pushing has been nerfed time and time again by Riot. Riot has been trying even as far back as Season 5 to gutter split pushing into the ground when they added lasers and shields on towers. If you look back at Zeke's, DFG, old Banner of Command, even ZZ'Rot, you can see how Riot is removing power from mages solo play, from Bot lane duo power, from split pushing champion advantages, in order to try forcing players to group with their team.

It's not a matter of League being a team oriented game, it's a matter of Riot purposefully FORCING players into grouping situations and making players require each other in order to win games. In the past, the game had elements which allowed these grouping situations to be avoided for as long as possible. You could stall games out in a variety of ways. Tanks had some power, Riot removed it. Split pushers could cause distractions, Riot removed it. Mages could save teams that were struggling with solo kills, Riot has nerfed it to force mages to group with their team.

Nearly everything and anything (two nerfs on Teleport sound familiar?) that teams can use from a losing situation to help recover Riot has destroyed, in order to create fast matches and force players into grouping situations.

Split pushing is still a team effort though, you have to pressure the enemy team, or prevent them from pushing, depending on the situation for the split pusher to push effectively, you also have to prevent the enemy team from responding to the split pusher, or respond with them to back up your single ally that's taking out towers

Well the whole concept is you pick a champion who is strong 1v1 or 1v2, champions like Jax, Tryndamere, etc. Then they either have to fully commit to stopping you which gives up pressure elsewhere on the map, or they let you take their towers in an attempt to win the fight 5v4.

The problem with this season is, if your team is behind already, your team won't even be able to defend towers or objectives 4v5... let alone win the fight. Not to mention, if it's a fight at Baron split pushing loses all purpose. If you are split pushing and your team loses baron 4v5, the enemy will usually mop the floor of your team and then have a 4 second recall timer to come after you with the home guard speed boost as well.

In the past, that was considered the most viable strategy, even in competitive play. Going from 1-3-1 to pressure side lanes, to threatening baron while your Top laner splits down bot with teleport was the normal thing to do. Anymore you simply cannot do that because Teleport channels for too long and has too long of a cooldown. By the time your Top lane makes it into the fight, the fight is probably already decided. If your team loses the fight, you don't gain anything because you don't have 8 seconds to keep pushing like you did in the past to go for the inhibitor.

I don't consider 'forcing people to work together' in a 5v5 game to be a flaw or a problem. I consider it a plus.

It's not entirely bad. The fault isn't the direction Riot is heading with League, instead it's the execution. I'm impressed by how much League of Legends has improved since I began playing back in 2012. Much of the game is actually great, I think most of the new and re-worked champions are cool and generally keep getting better and better.

The real area where problems are occurring is that the rest of the game is dated and simply can't keep up with the rate of changes and adjustments that Riot is introducing with every new champion or system that Riot implements. I would rest easy if there were any assurance that Riot planned on redoing every champion. There are so many champions in League of Legends now however, that by the time Riot finished, they'd already have to start over again because the game would have evolved and changed again before they completed all champions.

Riot Games has already opened Pandora's Box when they turned the game this direction a few years ago, and it's simply too late for them to turn back. The scale of the game is too large for them to keep up with the changes that need made, and that's why everything is going down hill so fast. Reality is, Riot would need a large scale VGU simultaneously on almost half of the champions in League in order to restore the game to an even remotely balanced and enjoyable state.

That's a daunting task when you consider the game has some 140 champions and counting.

promoting cooperation is bad? promoting healthy communication is bad? promoting the idea that its better to share the load as a group (rather than to slack off and let one or two people do an uneven amount of the work) is bad?

while it assumes that the strangers can do this, there is nothing outright bad about this design. This world is not a solo experience, and those who try to make it one ususally end up trying to blow it up in some way or another. Fostering an idea of working together for a common goal is EXACTLY what this world needs.

Maybe it's an uncomfortable concept for popular opinion right now... but cooperation and empathy are good things to develop if you plan on working with people in your life, as well as learning how to let shit go and not take petty crap personally to the point that it throws you off your game.

Cavesloth5 votes

Except by doing this instead of fostering cooperation, they've turned league into a worse cesspool of toxicity than it already was because FORCING 5 strangers to cooperate means in all likelihood they won't and will just turn on each other like pack of rabid dogs. The goal of cooperation and empathy is admirable, but lets face it, that isn't their goal, otherwise hopefully they'd do a FAR better job of it. Their goal has been shorter games, not cooperation and empathy, and they were willing to get them at ANY COST, including the quality of the game.

So yes, empathy and cooperation ARE good, and you probably won't get many that will argue it isn't (there are quite a few contrarians on these forums), forcing it never works. What you get when you force it is more akin to Saw movie than a hippie love in. It's great to encourage it, but for the love of everything that's holy don't force it.

Ok WARWICK was not a champion that made plays. His entire kit had 2 things in it.

  • Point and click ult that teleported you on top of your target and could be cancelled by almost every single cc effect very easily which is why he was almost never played in Pro.

  • Basic attack amplifiers (AS, On-hit dmg, lifesteal etc.)

He was useless. Just walk up to someone and beat them until they die. You can also press R if you have it. That's it.

And his rework is surprisingly well balanced, though his E is quite frustrating with the dmg reduction but tolerable.

Sometimes teamwork is a good thing, however forced teamwork is never a good thing.

I think a lot of frustration comes from the Ranked criteria.

"Forced" teamwork is fine, as long as the grading is relatively balanced.

At this moment, those who play Ranked are grouped into an 'All or Nothing' category. Either you win and everyone gets a relatively close amount LP or y'all lose and your LP tanks.

What happens if they fine tuned the grading? Whether you win or lose, the game takes into account your KDA, along with CS, warding, damage dealt/taken, objective control, and so on to then implement a greater range of varying amount of LP gain or loss?

It would separate those with skill or teamwork mentality from those who aren't or has greater selfish tendencies.

Jaegaer3 votes

This is a great idea honestly

Rossinator072 votes

I 100% agree with this. Its super frustrating when you keep losing even if you are 12/2/12 and your team doesn't know how to utilize your damage. As an ADC main this happens to me a lot, and I end up losing due to the fact that the team doesn't know how to group or doesn't know how to take objectives, they just roam around looking for kills and end up feeding mid way through the game causing the game to throw. Its very disappointing. I end up losing a ton of LP too which I think is unfair.

Leetri2 votes

Overwatch had that, they ended up removing it because it made the game worse. Instead of playing to win you'd have people pick Mercy and doing the bare minimum to not instantly lose, only to run away when things got sour so they could swoop in and get the 5 man revive. Doesn't matter if the team instantly got wiped again, they got to pad their stats. Some people ended up in top 500 on the server by just playing Mercy with a 30% win rate. Imagine if you could get Challenger by just ulting as Soraka as soon as it came off cooldown and by not feeding. Either a system like this is too impactful where it negatively changes how people play or it doesn't make any real difference. Riot's stated multiple times that they're never gonna do a system like this, anyway.

Zeromatsu1 votes

Pretty sure they still have it for people below diamond rank.

Leetri1 votes

They kept it there cause it barely makes any difference at the lower ranks, it's a very, very minor part in SR calculations. It's pretty much only semi-useful for brand new players so they get placed closer to their level slightly faster.

Cavesloth3 votes

I think you've stumbled on one the roots of WHY players are so much more toxic now than before. Yeah a lot of it is the high damage making combat a low skill coin flip and the snowball making comebacks all but impossible, but add this to the mix, forcing strangers to work seamlessly together, and you have real clusterfuck soup of toxicity that just needs a minor amount of heat to get cooking.

Many here will say you haven't stumbled on something and "DERP MOBAS are a TEAM GAME!" and technically they are right, they are team game, but almost all of Riots moves this season have made you more reliant on your team, which ironically thanks to other changes and crap matchmaking you are less able to rely on than ever, and its a recipe for toxicity and about as anti-fun as a it gets. No wonder their revenue is down.

It's fine wanting quick games so high damage is a thing (both for the Asian internet cafes and people just having shorter attention spans and busy lives these days), that I could live with, but the snowball and forcing teamwork has got to go.

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

Just give me my solo carry potential back. If i'm a solo laner who is 5/0 in like 10 minutes, 30 CS and FB turret ahead that should mean something but it doesn't. splitpushing isn't viable anymore. There is no early or midgame anymore. It's laning phase into lategame. A support brand with sorc boots instantly pops your steraks shield as a fed trinity/steraks darius like what the actual fuck. Everyone gets so much free gold and xp to never really fall behind. You barely exceed a two level advantage no matter how far ahead you are. You cannot outplay a jungle gank anymore which is the most frustrating about this shitgame. Enemy nearly dead and pushed under turret they just 1v2 you inside your double minion wave. Jungler is always full health then you get electrocute procc, ignite, grasp procc dead. So much dmg shoved into your face.

Cavesloth1 votes

Unfortunately split pushing is one of the things that can stall out and slow down games (even if ironically its also one of the ways to quickly end them) so Riot hates it since they want quicker games. So they've done everything they can to make it no longer viable. As someone who really loved this play-style, I feel you man it sucks.

A friend pointed this out to me and I've been saying it ever since - This game is designed around a fantasy that 98% of players do not ever get to experience, that being a five man team in close communication and coordination.

  • Most common elo: Silver

  • Most common mode: Ranked SoloQ

  • Most common mode of communication: Typing in a text box

Meanwhile, the game is being designed around Diamond+ (2% of the player base), as if the most common mode is ranked flex, and as if most players have voice comms (when only premades get it)

The problem here is obvious.

While I do believe that forced teamwork can be a negative thing, and that it very well could be considered league's biggest flaw, I also believe that it contributes to League's appeal and beauty as well. Those moments when you perfectly work together with these 5 random strangers (of which you will probably never meet in your life), and execute an amazing game winning play, is what makes League such an interesting and fluid game. But, with that said, not all League games end up with that level of synchronization or amity.

I really like this entire Post, And i can personally Feel for you because when i started playing the game and everything, i learned riven. and use to play her religiously, why? because she was a champion that if you we're the better skilled player in the lane, you could 1v1, 1v2, and even 1v3, with a nice early lead (maybe from an invade or early triple passive 3Q cheese) , and if you we're the better player, you could carry the game, and "1v5" the game. and i continued to play her because it felt really damn good and rewarding that because i was the better player in my lane, and made the right choices with my champion, that i would continue to a higher and higher lp based off my own skills and potential. And then there is now. i don't think i've even touched Her as a champion because how incredibly bad it feels to play her, and this isnt a cry for a buff to riven, but an agreement that this season (and 7, ass-end of 6) has had a negative impact to any champion or player who had the potential to solo carry a game if they played their hearts out taken away from them, and of course there is the argument that can be made of "you aren't playing all that great then if you aren't carrying" but as a more cynical thinking player who enjoys the accomplishment of kicking a laners ass, or carrying with 1v5 champions like Riven, and Twitch. it sucks that i cannot do that if i have the worse other 4 players on my team. cause im sure everyone hates - but has had the term "win lane, Lose game" thrown in their face after an unbearable 35-40 minute game where 1,2 or even the whole other 4 players of your team aren't doing so hot and getting that LP lose after doing everything in your power to even keep your team afloat, but it not being enough BECAUSE you we're held down because of 4 complete strangers.

not meaning to rant, even though its what i did, cause hey, I love this game, spent well over 8k hours and 5K$ over 4 accounts on NA and EUW, but all i wanted to be taken out of this is i think a player should be more so rewarded for solo play AS WELL as there being a great possibility of good communication and team play. and I personally feel the game in its current state makes it too hard for players who like to solo carry, and leaves most Ranked games up to RNG matchmaking of who got the 2-4 lose streak/toxic/griefing players, and who got the 1-3 solo carry players on a winning streak. nobody is perfect, but i do believe if you are good enough, you should have the ability to pick a hyper carry and HYPER CARRY. another role i learned was adc, and yes you can carry a little easier (since 1 person is put in a role to help you) , but even in that role as a Attack Damage CARRY there wont be any carrying happening if the team isnt there for you. Which they wont be, because you are just another player to them, and to most even if you are doing well they will not care. And you should't be held back because of that. if you are good, and consistently win lane, out jungle, out trade, out macro/micro, Mechanically outplay the hell out of your opponent, then you shouldn't be town away from a Win because 4 randoms cant Work with you, or each other.

1 Player cannot win a game, But 1 player Can lose a game. but in recent seasons, its been 1 player cant win, neither can anything short of 5. and it blows.

EDIT: yes i go all over the place here, but do try to take what i mean from this mess, im no writer, but i am a passionate player and there are just alot of problems with the game right now that i think the company should look after before adding 24 chromas to another champion or another skin line.

You have some that do very little work and take credit (Afk farmers) You have those who dont show up (AFK) Those that do all the work (Win lane, roam, Objectives)

Funny, cause AFK farming used to be viable strategy for winning games, the more minions killed the more towers got taken, the closer you got to the nexus. It used to be objectives mattered most. Now its kills so the enemy cannot defend said objectives because they can no longer effectively defend themselves.

Exactly, and thats why this season is so bad right now. You can have 100+ cs than the next guy and still be just as useless.

Honestly if Riot continues in this direction they need to at least ADMIT that kills are more important, and drop the CS requirements for a S grade, since lets face it, the guy with almost no cs and 15 kills is way more important to his team now than the guy with 300cs (and probably an S grade right now) and few kills. But they can't because that would be admitting they completely changed the direction of the whole game.

well, they did dynamic queue, but it was not popularly received.

An easier fix to this is simply voice chat.

This isn't that much of an issue in CS:GO and other games that have voice chat where you can instantly communicate with your teammates hands free. But people cry about abuse potential (which makes no sense because with voice chat would be a mute option DUH).

I think need to get some friends and play pre-made with them

it would remove the team work requirement from random people no?

but only to a certain degree in solo/duo

That's assuming all your friends are at your skill level or even want to play league anymore, which in my case is none of them because league is a dumpster fire right now.
