Can someone explain to me what this Yi/Taric thing is all about?

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who offered well-thought-out answers. I understand what the issue is, now.

I've seen a lot of people complaining about hyper-carry melee champs being hand held by supports, and I don't understand why it's worse than hyper-carry marksmen in the same situation. Yi and Tryn aren't new. Taric isn't new. Supports targeting Yi/Tryn during teamfights isn't new. Sure looks to me like the counter is the same; CC/disengage, nuke...so what am I missing? Is this the community immediately bad-mouthing everything that appears different, or this objectively broken somehow?

In order to reduce games time ( since 30min/game was too much standing to RIOT ) they boosted the damage beyond any limit and dropped the tower defence to ridiculus status.

Pro and higher Elo reached the conclusion that is pointless and too hard to hold mid lane while farming and it's way better ( Win % wise ) to support the jungler giving him gold and lvl advance.

Basically, now, all the mid gold and jungle gold/exp it's invested in a single champ that can carry the game dishing out incredible amount of dmg. This process it's called fuelling and YI+Taric it's an amazing combo.

On youtube you can find a lot of video on why the combo works and why it's so fearable.

Nother broken combo it's Karthus +Nunu

While in the pro scene a lot of matches has seen whole strategies builded around fuelling Kaisa

The gist of it is this:

Some champions are very oppressive to play against IF they are ahead. With yi and a number of other champions, if you lack the damage to kill them because they are ahead, it is very hard to disengage whereas they have the damage to kill you and the ability to both get to you and stick on you afterwards. Meaning, if a Yi is ahead, you are not having fun in the game because there is a champion on the other team that can, if he sees you, make a B-line on you, catch you with high reliability, and kill you and you have no _effective _action to take against this because your mobility is insufficient your damage is insufficient your tankiness is insufficient and your CC is useless / evaded and this persists even if you have allies nearby. Altogether a Mr Yi being 1 item and 1 level ahead of you sucks the fun out of the game due to the sheer ability of the yi to just Beeline on you and kill you.

This is balanced around these champions having a hard time getting ahead due to low amount of early power and low amount of early dueling ability.

The gold funneling strat is a workaround that removes the necessity to contest the other players in order to "get ahead", for one player. If that player is playing an "oppressive when ahead" champion, than that player get to be in his oppressive state "for free".

From a game balance perspective this is not a problem because you can get advantages elsewhere on the map, and we see that in pro play gold funneling strats do not out do standard play, however it still leaves you to deal with a "fed" mr yi / karthus / jax / trynd / whatever which is a sucky experience.

It's always existed, people were just scared to try it since meta and crap. Then someone important does it and it catches on. Damn shame really, Taric's gonna get a bollocking because of this.

It used to be MasterYi jungle Kayle top and MasterYi taking top's farm while Kayle only took the XP, not that popular, only done by chinese players to boost people to plat. Then people realized that it was a good strat and with the new jungle exp, they picked Taric mid, MasterYi jungle, MasterYi taking mid and jungle farm and stomping the enemy team because how snowbally the game is. A 4 levels ahead MasterYi with item 3124 item 1419 and Conqueror is super scary to face. This is the reason people do the same with Karthus Nunu, because the champion can be way ahead by just playing passively. And a Karthus level 11 with 2 items when everyone is level 7 / 8 hurts badly with his ultimate

Gold funneling; mid support babysits carry jungle and doubles up on opponent when possible. Very painful to play against.
