How can we improve the new player experience?

MadMad Sickness··1 votes·327 views

Recently, Riot has added in features and is reworking key aspects of the game to make it easier for players to get into. This is the reason for combing the essence and ip systems so that champions can be acquired via shards.

But is this really enough?

Are there any things in particular that you believe could be ruining the new player experience?

What do you think causes new players to run away and do you think riot is doing enough to keep them?

Jungle and CSing tutorials should definitely be a thing imo, but optional

I agree, they can even make new gamemodes that are exclusive to new players out of these simple game designs.

You know whats ruining the new player experience? 95% of the low level playerbase being Bronze/unranked smurfs who think they are amazing so they flame all game long.

I would quit LoL after 5 games if I was a new player.

Although a bit of an exageration, I don't think this is entirely false.

new players do tend to encounter smurfs in their games, especaily early on. Not only that, but they may also run into other toxic individuals who are either coming off of a permanent ban or are new players who are unaware of the rules on toxicity.

Being exposed to these things right out the get go may encourage complacency (thinking these behaviors are "ok" or the "norm). Question is, how do we discourage negative behavior and counter these negative experiences that new players encounter early on?

Yeah, I got perma banned without any warning because I didn't know there were certain things you can't say in the game since everyone else was saying them around me.

I feel for you. And unfortunately, i'm sure that happens all the time because it may not be all that clear from the beginning how riot expects to play.

I personally believe that Riot should do something in regards to promoting or encouraging a more positive environment right from the start. If they added in some sort of quiz and gave you IP/RP for it that would be an amazing incentive and people would know from the start what is expected of them. That way, people know for sure what is and what isn't tolerated.

It needs to begin with the players, and also with those who are just beginning to play.

With the new runes and level system it's a good start. The next thing to do now is have a better and more extensive tutorial that teaches the basic of wards, CS, jungle camps, objectives, etc.

Mission creator

Allow players to create and upload custom-made tutorials and solo event-style games. Crowdsource it, the playerbase can create awesome tutorials. They will also create hard and difficult games that can challenge experienced players, and even provide learning experiences for advanced game mechanics.

This is something I have also thought about. Having game-modes, either player-made or other, that are created for the sole purpose of either challenging and/or teaching.

It would be a great place to funnel new players while also separating them from smurf or returning players.

I'm gonna try to revive this conversation to try to get a more active discussion.

I personally believe that we can do more in regards to the "new player" experience as a community.
