PSA: Toxic/griefing/feeding team made me become toxic, so why am I banned/suspended and they arent?
If like this and would like to reference it, feel free to do this. Also, feel free to reference the other thread about losing your rights to your purchases.
Anyway, I'm seeing a complacent mentality alot and it's troubling. The truth of the matter is, that if you are caught saying something offensive, including language that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, sexually explicit, or racially, ethically, or otherwise, and someone reports you for it you will be punished and disciplined regardless of the trigger of that behavior. The belief that because the community or that particular game is toxic, that it then makes it OK to be toxic IS complete complacency and your security in feeling this way is completely false.
I've been posting this around because it happens so frequently, and it applies just as frequently... terms of use: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/legal/termsofuse
16.6. If I violate this Agreement and Riot does nothing for a long time, does that mean im off the hook? (No. We reserve all of our rights.)
Riot Games' failure to enforce any provision of this Agreement shall in no way be construed to be a present or future waiver of such provision, nor in any way affect the right of any party to enforce each and every such provision thereafter. Any waiver by Riot Games of any provision, condition or requirement of this Agreement shall not constitute a waiver of any future obligation to comply with such provision, condition or requirement.
Even if your behavior was not caught until now, or your behavior was triggered by another person's behavior: you are not justified. Riot's ability to enforce their rules is independent of their actual enforcement of the rules. Because you yourself were caught, riot has already reserved the right to punish you even if they havn't punished you before for that behavior and even if they are unable to punish others for the same behavior, as you yourself were caught "red-handed". Believing that a behavior is OK simply because it goes largely unnoticed to a certain point does not make it OK.
The use of certain comments are considered offenses that are grounds enough for disciplinary action. It doesn't matter if you weigh your own comments differently then other people, you will be disciplined based on what Riot deems to be unacceptable behavior because they have reserved the right already: regardless of whether they are morally in the right or wrong.
If you actively complain about the toxicity level of the game: you should be actively working to decrease the toxicity of the game instead of contributing to it. You are not justified if you offend someone, they report you, and you are banned because of the things you say. Even if the other individual receives no punishment for their own actions.
If you use terms that you have used before or that another individual has used before, without being punished, and were subsequently punished for using those terms: you do it at your own risk. Certain terms have absolutely no place in this game: you should not tell people to commit suicide for absolutely any reason, you should not call people derogatory/racial slurs for any reason, you should not be verbally abusive for any reason. If you do and are reported, then you will be disciplined justly and accordingly.
Make a habit of muting and reporting; if you do not see those individuals words then they cannot affect you. If you report them then they will be inspected for wrong doing, and it may add to the case against them. If the individual threatens to report you or incites others to report you falsely, then that is also an offense and is grounds enough to report/mute. DO NOT get sucked into negative behavior. DO make the best out of those situations, report and move on.
Riot does look at these cases unless the program autonomously finds key phrases for an automated punishment (obvious slurs, derogatory terms, etc as they have 0% tolerance for that language). The system cannot flag them if you do not report them.
And at the end of a bad game, you can ALWAYS just que up again and play again. No one game, nor any one person is worth you losing your right to continually play the game. It is not worth making all the investments you've put into the game worthless.
So, just remember...
Take steps to reform your own behavior, and guard yourself from being pulled into negative attitude that will inevitably push you into going on tilt. This system depends entirely on you, the players, to step up the responsibility for the toxicity of the community: because YOU ARE the community.
