PSA: I spent alot of money/time in the game, but was still banned... why?

MadMad Sickness··32 votes·3,165 views

Someone asked me to do a thread about the loss of personal investments, especially because this gets thrown around alot and people don't realize certain things about what's considered thiers. Feel free to reference this or the other thread about toxicity: Toxic/griefing/feeding team made me become toxic, so why am I banned/suspended and they arent?

Anyway, so why exactly can they take everything away from you at any given time... terms of use

{quoted}

4.3. Do I “own” the Virtual Goods I unlock? (No. What you “unlock” is not the virtual good itself, but rather, a qualified right to access it in the Game.)

You have no ownership or other property interest in any of the Virtual Goods you unlock, regardless of whether you acquired access to those Virtual Goods using Riot Points, Influence Points or Hextech Crafting. Virtual Goods have no monetary value. You can’t redeem them for cash. You can’t obtain any refunds for purchasing Riot Points or Virtual Goods, except as expressly permitted by us. You can find our current content refund policy here.

We have the right to delete, alter, move, remove, or transfer any and all Game Content—including Virtual Goods—in whole or in part, at any time and for any reason or no reason, with or without notice to you, and with no liability of any kind to you. We don’t provide or guarantee, and expressly disclaim, any value, cash or otherwise, attributed to any data residing on servers we operate or control, including any Game Content attributed to your account. The sale or transfer of your right to access certain Virtual Goods, Influence Points, Riot Points or Hextech Items may only be conducted via services approved of or provided by us, if any.

4.4. Once again: I don’t own these Virtual Goods? (“No!” shouted all the lawyers.)

NOTWITHSTANDING ANYTHING TO THE CONTRARY HEREIN, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT YOU SHALL HAVE NO OWNERSHIP OR OTHER PROPERTY INTEREST IN YOUR ACCOUNT, AND THAT ALL RIGHTS IN AND TO YOUR ACCOUNT ARE AND SHALL FOREVER BE OWNED BY AND INURE TO THE BENEFIT OF RIOT GAMES. YOU FURTHER ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT YOU HAVE NO CLAIM, RIGHT, TITLE, OWNERSHIP, OR OTHER PROPRIETARY INTEREST IN THE GAME CONTENT THAT YOU UNLOCK OR ACCUMULATE, REGARDLESS OF ANY CONSIDERATION OFFERED OR PAID IN EXCHANGE FOR RIOT POINTS OR VIRTUAL GOODS. FURTHERMORE, RIOT GAMES SHALL NOT BE LIABLE IN ANY MANNER FOR THE DESTRUCTION, DELETION, MODIFICATION, IMPAIRMENT, HACKING, OR ANY OTHER DAMAGE OR LOSS OF ANY KIND CAUSED TO THE GAME CONTENT, VIRTUAL GOODS OR RIOT POINTS, INCLUDING THE DELETION OF GAME CONTENT, VIRTUAL GOODS OR RIOT POINTS UPON THE TERMINATION OR EXPIRATION OF YOUR ACCOUNT.

When you play this game, you don't own it. You literally don't own any of it. When you make an in-game purchase, you are only "allowed" to use the stuff that you are playing with. You are only "allowed" to play this game, and you are essentially leased the content subject to the prices Riot deems fit to sell the "use" of those particular things, regardless whether you think this is wrong and regardless of how much you really want to buy them for. Riot owns all of the property of the game and you only have the right to use it for as long as they think it is "OK" for you to use it.

(mind you, this doesn't stop anyone of us from spending 500+$ on the game LOL. It's def a fun game and almost all online games are like this)

So, this leads us to the next part:

{quoted}

2.1. How can my account be suspended or terminated? 2.1.2. Us.We may terminate or suspend your account if we determine, in our sole discretion, that: (a) you have violated any part of this Agreement; (b) we have stopped offering the Riot Services in your region; or (c) doing so would be in the best interests of our community, the Riot Services, or the rights of a third party.

2.2. What happens if my account is terminated? (No LoL for you.)

If your account is terminated, you’ll no longer have access to it, including any of the associated data or content (e.g., champions, skins, Riot Points, etc.). You’ll not be entitled to any refunds and we’ll have no liability to you. We also reserve the right to terminate any other accounts you may have created (also without any refunds or liability to you).

You understand and agree that using the Riot Services comes with the risk that your account may be terminated or suspended and that, whenever you use the Riot Services, you’ll bear this risk in mind and always conduct yourself appropriately.

According to this, Riot has already reserved the right to remove people from the game that they honestly don't want playing it. If they believe that you are a bad person who completely deserves to not play their game (even if that is true or not, regardless of the circumstances and whether or not they are right/wrong in what they say): then they will remove you completely from the game, and they are completely justified and have every right to.

How you view your own misbehavior doesn't matter. Whether Riot is actually morally right or wrong doesn't matter: if you have broken the terms of use then Riot can remove you from the game or can remove your rights to use certain parts of the game because you already agreed to give them these rights when you decided to play this game.

When you decided to make a purchase, you agreed that Riot has the right to take it all back from you at anytime, regardless of what you beleive is fair and regardless of what you think is right. They are not liable for any purchases you have made as those things are considered "their" property not "yours". When you purchase something it is only you buying the "rights" to access them as that property is entirely riots. When you get suspended or removed: those rights cease regardless of purchases.

Just think about that next time you decide to troll your teammates, and the next time you think it's ok to be toxic/inflammatory or decide to use language that isn't appropriate. You are being a toxic person at your own risk. Just remember, if you are caught then you entirely deserve disciplinary action and Riot is completely justified (in most cases). And, if you are permanently removed from the game because Riot thinks there is no place for you in this game, then its probably because of continual toxicity and/or you breaking the terms of use without remorse. And if you are banned because of your lack of reform, this means that you completely deserve your punishment..

SO, be nice to people and your teammates because its honestly worth it. Also, do not undermine Riot for what they can or cannot do, they are doing everything they can to make this community better. They deserve our better judgement and support if we personally want to make this game better.

It's easy for you to criticize them because you personally don't know how much work goes into creating this game and managing it.

If you want the experience to improve, YOU have to be that change because YOU ARE the community.

Biggest lie in League of legends. "I have read and accepted the terms of service"

I skimmed it once when I joined, read it in full about a month later, read it again a few months later because I was bored (and yes, it was slightly entertaining because of the funny comments Riot slipped in there), and I have read sections of it in order to use it as a reference in Boards posts. They’re not nearly as awful to read as some other companies’ Terms of Services.

Velzard of Koz7 votes

The fact that this needs to be explained is sad. Even without reading the terms of use, it should be common knowledge that each company, to protect their right to ban misusers of their service, states you do not own the account directly.

with any online internet game with large player base there is an unspoken rule that is broken way to often

rule: don't be a dick

The entire system is a joke, riot is hypocritical beyond reason, riot pushes their views on all of their players, oversensitive coddled children that lack the ability to process any sort of criticism are rewarded while level headed players are disciplined, bad sportsmanship and competitive gameplay is overlooked, and the organization feels justified in implementing systems to stop arguments to begin with.... But keep on sucking up to the company that gives literally zero ***** about you.

deathgod59 votes

Can you show one example of this level headed players getting punished , because I keep seeing people say this but I really never saw any recent (aka last 2 years if you ignore the horrible 3rd party ban fails, which they fixed)situation in which this was true.

Fork xD1 votes

So your logic is you didn't see it so it didn't happen? Nice to hear, but this isn't really an argument and therefore why should I prove my text any more than you should have to prove yours.

Barkhoof6 votes

If you're going to make inflammatory statements contrary to the statements that Riot has put out (if you give advice without criticizing, you won't be punished [paraphrased]), without proof, you're spouting off opinions and passing them as facts. I'd counter that DG5's request is reasonable. But, you're entitled to keep your incorrect opinion if you'd like - it's a free country.

Fork xD1 votes

I won't argue with a hypocrite ( you ), but I would like to point out that your logic is that I should show proof of the fact that people are injustly banned while the previous poster should be believed at face value. This logic is absurd, childish, and biased ( hence the hypocrisy ). Furthermore opinions are not correct or incorrect. They are opinions and therefore have no solution. Also I have never claimed my opinions are facts, rather I have claimed that opinions are vastly overused within the utilized system. You may also want to consider before you call me "inflammatory" whether I am actually taking the time to type his in order to instigate a single person hat I care nothing about, or rather to explain why I feel the system is unjust in terms that are relevant to me. Remember that just because something hurts your feelings doesn't mean that it hurts others ( inverse logic of what you are using to justify not being able to express yourself without he constant fear of triggering some emotional lurker ).

You made the assertion, you are required to prove it. It is not up to him to prove the negative. That's how logic works. Further, we know you got yourself banned. You have nobody to blame but yourself.

Shahamut4 votes

For all of his talk about logic, he does argue very emotuonally.

Fork xD1 votes

While talking about a system based on emotion which was a flaw I pointed out. Thank you for the attempt though.

-side note- emotionally*

Shahamut3 votes

The system isn't "based on emotion". The emotion comes strictly from your reaction to the system. This is born of your general disagreement with RIOT's desires behavior code of conduct which you wrongfully assert that they are "forcing onto people". The terms are there BEFORE you start playing and no one forces you to play the game.

You choose to enter their arena, so to speak, and in doing so agree to play by their rules. Your argument is functionally an emotional outcry of a spoiled child, "STOP TELLING ME WHAT TO DO!", a rejection to authority.

For people wrongfully banned, RIOT has a system for appeals, and I have witnessed it work on more than one occasion.

If you are simply arguing "the system is flawed", congratulations, what system isn't? I have yet to see a perfect system for anything, much less for something judicial.

Your posts carry very little logic, and mostly angry sounding emotional and here say anecdotal evidence.

Name a corp that ever gave a shit about anyone.

And not as PR.

Fork xD1 votes

Isn't that the problem I'm bringing up? So you agree? ( Your comment is uninformative as well as unconstructive. )

Shahamut1 votes

In general, it's foolish to assume that just because a corporation desires to make money (it is what sustains it's existence) that the company in question automatically doesn't care about it's community or customers. Might be true, but also might not be. It's not worth arguing about and it holds no weight in a debate because it lacks any way of being proven outside of a direct statement from the company in question.

Also, any GOOD business professional knows that caring about their customer base is how you make the most money.

Fork xD1 votes

Just as the opposite assumption as foolish so your point is? Also it wasnt based on the premise of profit ( that you conveniently snuck in their ) but rather on experience which is how you judge consumer products. If you are going to talk PR do take time to factor in quality of product or you might as well drop the business aspect.

Shahamut1 votes

There is no opposite assumption, just giving benefit of the doubt when there is a lack of evidence to the contrary. Innocent until PROVEN guilty. That kind of thing.

Fork xD1 votes

Therefore guilty until innocent or neutral verdicts could be used as a contrary assumption which you seem to conveniently and easily overlook (while it is the obvious inverse of your scenario that you claim doesn't exist). Logically, based on what you actually "know", it is safe to assume that a neutral stance would be optimal seeing as you know next to nothing when it comes to the actual internal workings of the corporation you speak of.

There is no room for advancement in this conversation and therefore I am done having it with you.

Involved, toxic individuals get removed from the game all the time. Even pros/twitch streamers get removed. When a person decides to be toxic, they are being toxic at their own risk.

Anyway, It all depends on what words you used when you went off on that person and what you told him. Certain Things, like telling someone to commit suicide, have no place in the game because those things are considered bullying.

You have to remember that this is real life where there is another person on the other side of the screen. And These are real people with real emotions going through real life circumstances, and you are completely unaware of what any particular person is going through in their lives.

There is 0% tolerance for things like hate speech and encouraging suicide... for a reason.

Anyway I would still encourage you to find out what language is the language that put u over the top for your own personal growth. (That is if u don't know already).

Fork xD1 votes

Once again I find it funny that you take the side of avoiding being inflammatory in game while doing the opposite within the boards. While you may feel justified in your opinions, realize that that feeling transfers to others and therefore it is all important or not important at all. Either way you should stop overlooking it.

Also you both are so interested in speaking of upvotes while I have stated multiple times in simple manners that I do not care about a voting system that rewards players with... what was it?

Fegone1 votes

Upvotes and Downvotes just represent what other readers agree and or disagree with. That's all. Looks like not many people agree with your point of view. Maybe you should start start thinking about that.

Fork xD1 votes

I have considered it which was the point of my last post.

Fork xD1 votes

I guess if you are using the word reaction in the most broad sense imaginable then yes, any type of action in response to stimuli is a reaction. With that logic I figure it is hard to have a real constructive argument with anybody.

This is what happens when there is a monopoly on a specific market. Which riot games has. They don't treat their players fairly. For example, if you are banned for 'offensive language' and/or 'harassment', why doesn't the account get a permanent chat ban. Why the entire account? I'll tell you why, the answer is simply; profits. They know most people will just make a new account and buy skins over again. There is no justification in banning an account if the person has the obligation to simply make a brand new account and perform 'offensive language' and 'harassment' again. The solution is simple. I literally just /mute all anytime I see ANYONE doing anything or saying something I don't like. This way I don't ever have the temptation to say anything in the chat box.

Scuttle2 votes

No, the reason is because when people are perma-muted they troll. I remember people getting thousands of games of chat restrictions. That was Riot's attempt at perma-mutes. But most players just trolled because they couldn't force out their anger through chat.

Oak Island 1 votes

Chat restriction and permanent chat mute are two entirely different things. You are assuming that someone who uses offensive 'language' and 'harassment' are automatically going to perform well and grief. That is a terrible argument because it's just simply not true. I use to flame people all the time while carrying games.

TroubleEVOlved1 votes

i think a fair punishment would be permanent chat filters on

TroubleEVOlved1 votes

this is when all my problems started... when i took off the language filter i tallied up how much ive spent on my account and it looks to be around $3,000.00 maybe $3,500.00
