Cassiopeia getting NERFED on the PBE

Canastus··41 votes·13,240 views

Straight from the PBE:

Cassiopeia Twin Fang (E) increased poison damage buff reduced to 20% from 25%

I have only one question for you, Stashu. What on earth were you thinking?

Edit: Please read this post before you jump to any further conclusions. We're dealing with a buff that was supposed to take place just to be scaled down again. That's absolutely not okay, considering what's actually affected here.

By cutting down her poison-damage, Riot fails to realize the needs of her playerbase. We want to see her return to being an actual poison-mage and this kind of nerf only contradicts that purpose.

Stashu: Er....I think I buffed her posion TOO much...sorry Cass, gonna have to MILK YA...

Cassiopeia : What!? only 1.16% of the player base actually uses me!

Stashu: I just don't want you to be TOO powerful...

Cassiopeia: I can't even considered a poison mage at this point! I WAS A VENOMOUS SNAKE-WOMAN WHO'S BEEN TURNED INTO A GARDEN SNAKE WITH OVERSIZED FANGS.

Stashu: Shhhh....I know better than everyone....you'll be perfect soon, my creation...

Cassiopeia: Why are you such a necrophiliac?....YOU'VE ALREADY KILLED ME! item 3070Cassiopeiaitem 3070

Hey guys, this is actually not a nerf.

On PBE, Cassiopeia's E now adds a poison damage amplifier to her target. This is a totally new effect that she doesn't have currently. In the end, this is actually a fairly significant buff. The "reduced from 25% to 20%" update that you see on s@20 is actually just some fine tuning on how much of this new effect she will be getting in the upcoming patch.

Canastus6 votes

I'm aware of that but I'm absolutely not okay with them reducing the bonus. I simply cannot imagine her as being too strong, considering her current underpowered state. She'll need any help she can get and this kind of cut seems unjustified to me, after all I already discussed the mathematics on this matter with Stashu in another thread before and came to a rather disappointing conclusion. And now he's going to make the numbers worse? Please no.

No, she's not getting buffed. She's having power (ap scaling) moved out of her E (which is only useful in combination with Q/W) and into ... an E -> Q/W combo.

EffectFX7 votes

No she's definitely getting buffed.

http://www.surrenderat20.net/p/current-pbe-balance-changes.html

Noxious Blast (Q)
Movement speed buff now 20% at all ranks from 10/15 /20/25 /30%.

Twin Fang (E)

Mana cost changed to 35/45/55/65/75 from 30/45/60/75/90.

Now adds a debuff on the target which amplifies further poison damage by 25% for 5 seconds, stacks up to 2 times (50%).

AP Ratio changed to **0.55 at all ranks from 0.4/0.45/0.5/0.55/0.6**

A stronger early game for a slightly weaker E in the mid game (levels 9/13 depending on when you max E)

Nevermind a 20-40% increased damage output from Q/W.

Level 5 Q with a 40% increased damage goes from 235 + 45% AP to = 329 + 63% AP total damage. Level 5 W with 40% increased damage is now 30 + 10% AP per second to 42 + 14% AP (up to 7 seconds, not that anyone would stand in it for seven seconds).

You've gone from occasionally pushing for Cass to be better to being a whiny bitch about changes that weren't even live.

Canastus10 votes

You must have been sleeping under a rock those past three months if you question the justification of my outcry. The team in charge of her rework has been ignoring any concerns and critique regarding prior changes so far, especially during the time before 4.16 went live.

There's only one way to deal with these people and that's by shouting at them, there's no other way to get their attention. Every single action needs to be questioned, it'd be a big mistake to leave them to their own devices after what they've done to Cass so far.

I absolutely do not trust them.

It is not a nerf relative to her live state. It is a nerf relative to a previous PBE state.

It is a bad change as it yet fails to solve the power-budget dominance of her E to the exclusion of all else.

And you guys haven't realized that the new "buff" is woefully counter-intuitive? are we supposed to E then Q? or Q E Q? how about stop overloading her E and un-nerf her gutted Q? no one wants to play Cassiopeia as the new "ADC-style AP", they want a poison mage and you continuously rape any chance she has at being viable.

No one is asking to make her overpowered, they just want her to return to her old core values. This is not unreasonable RiotScruffy.

Grand Eleven14 votes

I get that overall it's still a buff, I think the concern is that why nerf the poison amp when you could shave some off the E damage instead?

One of the cornerstone complaints is that too much power rests in her E ... so quite frankly we would rather see THAT scaled back vs. the new poison damage that we still haven't got. I'd rather there be too much power in poisons than too much power in her E spam.

RiotRiot Scruffy14 votes

This is a good question. I think the reason the amp was tuned down rather than lowering E base damages is because if E base damages get lowered too far it makes her "last hit with E for mana" game much harder and more frustrating.

Thryale5 votes

then can we at least get some base dmg or ratio buffs on her poisons?

I understand that with the current direction you guys will never give cass her .8 ap ratio poison back, but can you at least bump it up to .5 instead of .45? (I like round numbers)

Also, can we get some kind of scaling dmg on her miasma? Like a self amp for each second a champ spends in it so that it can act as a legitimate zoning tool? Or maybe some form of better cc? (like if cass E's a target in her W the target gets slowed for 80% or something along the lines of crippling her target)

"last hit with E for mana" game? don't make me laugh, this mechanic didn't add depth to Cass gameplay, it's mandatory to farm for mana or you go OOM in seconds, it's an excuse for the removal of her old passive, which enabled Cass to chase down other champions. Also in order to get the mana refund you have to sacrifice noxius blast or miasma on minions, or you get disabled twin fang for 5 seconds. Just everything in Cassiopeia rework is absurd, contradictory and with no final solution.

Grand Eleven9 votes

This is an interesting point for two reasons(questions) i guess for me:

  1. Is this an intended mana game? As in, is this part of the driver for the lower mana return she's gotten because you expect her to last hit with E to build mana?

  2. With the PBE passive adjustment this doesn't synergize with getting stacks at ALL. Using E to last hit wont get me passive stacks anymore so I have two mini games now (timing E last hits in between AAs to get more mana if it's safe to eat the reset timer ... maybe lay a W carpet first to make that an easier choice?)

So are we getting a bit needlessly complex now? I have to last hit with E to get mana back while poisoning the enemy champ to get passive stacks? if i don't efficiently last hit with E I go OOM (a common complaint) so I wont be able to stack poison on the enemy champ. At the end of the day this extra resource management wont get me any lane power as we are deliberately using a passive to gate her early game so it's a ton of work just so we can carry 10 minutes sooner?

I could be in theorycraft over-drive but the idea of keeping "e" powerful to ease in last hitting implies the E really is and truly an AA replacement which is ... well ... interesting.

U4fyn2vZzW8 votes

When are you going to scrap her horrid passive?

Slavvik11 votes

Yes, it IS a nerf. It's a nerf because it further removes the effectiveness of her ability to poke with Q and W without first risking life and limb by using E.

OH - and even if she DOES manage to safely use E, the reduced base effectiveness of her Q makes her far less of a threat to multiple targets than she was immediately following the rework.

The 25% stacking twice wasn't enough. 20% is even more not enough. You know why? Because the entire core concept behind this direction is flawed. It doesn't matter how big you make the tower if the foundation is weak....

Just because it makes her a little better at the horrible direction that Stashu wants to force her into does NOT mean that it isn't further damaging to her overall effectiveness and identity.

Edit: Made wording a little softer - I want to communicate an idea, not incite anger

RiotRiot Scruffy7 votes

I hear your concern as poking with Q in an important part of her play. Luckily, there are no reductions to the Q base effectiveness in the upcoming changes. Poison amp with E is just an added bonus.

Slavvik6 votes

Edit: Thank you for your response, I appreciate it

Upcoming changes don't address the gutting done in the rework for the standalone effectiveness of her Q - it's still in a state of "nerfage" - it just gives her a stronger Q IF she uses E. Not much better, and ignores a large amount of feedback regarding the feelings towards skills feeling completely worthless without E in the equation.

You're correct, you're not nerfing her Q specifically MORE in UPCOMING changes. But by further increasing her reliance on her E, you're still damaging Cassiopeia.

RiotRiot Scruffy3 votes

I agree that Q in isolation has been somewhat undertuned after her first set of changes.

Even though, with these changes, Q isn't receiving any direct number buffs it is actually getting a pretty nice indirect boost. Because of the new E poison amp mechanic, Cass is now able to rank up her Q first in lane (she typically has to rank up E first on live if my sources are correct). This has made a big difference in her being able to engage in a somewhat safer poke lane when she doesn't want to go crazy all in.

Edit: if she is still struggling after these changes, I know that Stashu will continue supporting her with more updates. Lets see how these buffs turn out and if more/different stuff is required.

Kowe The Ewok19 votes

Are you aware that these changes are condemning her to be a close range mage?

Her Q on isolation is IGNOREABLE. (In fact, due to common magic resist rune choices an auto attack deals as much damage as Q on level 1 & 2)

Being forced to follow up with E eacht time to deal damage which can actually be considered poke limits her overall range to that of her E (700).

Thus she she is easily getting outtraded by any common midlaner even after the "buffs".

The amplification is a gimmik which does not solve her main problems at all, in fact it actually worsens them since her Q recived yet another damage nerf as a compensation for the amplification changes which yet again shiftes power into her E.

Cassiopeia is the one champion in the game (Yes, also on PBE) who has 3 skills which feel completely worthless on their own AND used together (Q W R).

The gameplay impacts of this rework are just horrible.

People aren't mad about the rework just because she's so godawfully weak. I mean...it certainly didn't help that she was this weak, but it's a matter of GAMEPLAY and not balance.

We're either telling them we don't like it or we need to get behind something on a consensus.

The question is, what is it?

I posted something of another idea, but it really hasn't been seen yet due to the boards format.

Grand Eleven7 votes

I wrote out a few ideas in any thread Stashu cropped up in. I've tried not to repeat myself as I'm assuming his non-reply meant more that he didn't agree with them ... but one of my ideas in particular got very decent community response at least:

http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/1jXwf2BP-latest-on-cassiopeia?comment=0089

Your root assertion that we need to get behind a single idea as a community I think ... is impossible and flawed. can't please everyone all of the time. That's unrealistic. I do think we should be able to follow the 80% rule, however. By that I mean we should be able to see the common themes of the feedback and work towards that.

There's likely a million ways to adjust Cass ... or any champion really. The key for me is that we can map the changes back to the concerns. If we can: we are getting progress. If we can't ... we are wasting time.

I'm not convinced the poison tweak addresses the champion issues ... so focusing on tweaking the numbers feels premature to me at this point.

To type the percieved issues out for the Zileanth time:

  1. Her Passive is unsatisfying and thematically goes against the champion theme/character
  2. Too much of her power budget is placed in her "e", which over simplifies everything from gear purchasing to game play.
  3. Poison has been de-emphasized and is no longer "core" to the champion identity.

There's a "hidden 4th issue" around if hyper-carry should even be a role for her ... but personally I've felt our chance to impact that decision is too late, so it's best to focus on the areas we CAN impact: game play and character theme.

I'm rather in "spaghetti mode": keep throwing ideas out there until something sticks. I'm hopeful another round of open discussion can start once these changes go live so I can lob my next batch.

Right, because the rework curbstomped her Q and W power into the ground. The poison amp is just a false invisible change in E damage calculation intended to fool longtime Cass mains into thinking her DoT/poisons are powerful, when in reality Q and W are still complete garbage and are not satisfying at all.

Is it impossible for her t~~~~o be even a little decent. I mean you max E before Q, so the damage bonus in lane is already ~~~~abysmal

On one hand, I can understand that Riot is trying to undershoot releases so that we don't get any huge problem cases. On the other hand, isn't Cassiopeia already weak in PBE? I am hoping these get reverted...

(Disclaimer: not a Cassiopeia main) Aren't you supposed to max Q first (especially now)? E mana costs seem brutal early game...

Starlighte11 votes

Lol. Honestly Cass's issue is no longer "balance" or "she is a bit undertuned" right now, and what you Scruffy and Stashu both refuse to acknowledge is that Cass is essentially an entirely different champion that does *not *perform her intended fantasy role in this game. The passive needs to be trashed, why is it that you guys keep refusing to broach that topic and instead try and stuff MORE nuances into her kit (which already needs a dedicated wiki page for her opponent to have ANY clue what she can/can't do). Whatever happened to reducing the burden of knowledge, and making sure spells were clear?

There is literally no way for you guys to make her passive clear to her opponent.

"But you can read the little buff icon if you click on her champion."

Have fun reading in the middle of a moba, while not losing sight, and not dying.

Can we just have a serious conversation about why you believe the passive MUST stay and why you think the community HATES the passive? Because honestly, "Cass being undertuned" is no longer a viable answer.

Starlighte11 votes

You can buff Cass's numbers until she has a 99% winrate, and the rework will still be viewed as a disaster by dedicated Cass mains because she no longer functions as she was intended to. Poison DoT mage is gone in lieu of Ryze 2.0

Who says Tibbers has to be a part of Annie's kit? Wellp, between the lore (which Riot can apparently retcon whenever they get into a corner) and a character's well-established and long-lived design, you're right. It's Riot who decides what type of champion Cass is. But you look at Cass's actual model/splash, and try and tell me that that sort of champion doesn't advertise "I'm going to poison you" loud and proud. You would be not only lying to yourself, but defending some arbitrary position of Riot's for no reason other than you want to be of the minority of dissenting opinions on Cass's rework.

The reason I will disagree with everyone who says "we want old cass back" and revolt at every change done that is not old cass is because Riot specifically stated that "new cass is closer to where we want cass to be than old cass was. Not a nerf.

A reduction in the amount of buff that is on PBE.

+20% poison damage if you land an E is still lots.

TheUltimateSpear6 votes

Okay, let me make sure I have this correct.

First time round the PBE, Stashu adds a poison amplifcation on Twin Fang, stacked twice, 25% to 50 % increase in further poison damage for a few seconds. This turns about to make Cassiopeia too powerful, so the base damage on Noxious Blast was scaled down to 70/105/140/175/210. (I think) Well, that won't do, it's backwards thinking, right? So, Stashu raises base damage on Noxious Blast back to 75/115/155/195/235 and nerfed the poison amp on Twin Fang, therefore scaling back the power of the "buff" without reducing Noxious Blast's base damage. Someone please respond if I am incorrect, but I think the base damage on Noxious Blast has not been touched if this youtube video is correct. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdN37EhNrVg At about 2:02 you can see the base damage on Noxious Blast. Thus, the changes are indeed a strict buff... if not a perfect one.

I still we've got a long ways to go before Cass isn't so reliant on Twin Fang. My problem is that she may be in a balanced spot after the changes, but she won't be fiXed. She'll still be focused on Twin Fang spam. She won't be fun. She still won't be the poison mage. She still won't be Cassiopeia . :/

This is going to happen. Stashu has not given any indication of changing her back into the interesting playstyle she had before the rework, despite all of the literally thousands of forum posts saying they do not like the single target hypercarry direction for Cass. The rest of Riot seems to have his back on this, so the Cass we knew and loved for years is gone for good.

I for one, am pretty turned off of Cass and can't bring myself to even take her into a normals match. It's like playing Caitlin because you loved having the longest early game range and really good early game harass and power, and then they cut her range in half and make her have an inherent Runaans effect. Sure, you can turn that into a balanced champ at with enough tweaking, but it isn't the same champ in any regard.

Context is important people.

Cassiopeia http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/ygxuK4gR-quick-cassiopeia-update-re-pbe-and-421 http://www.surrenderat20.net/p/current-pbe-balance-changes.html

[More context and information on these changes available in Stashu's thread!]
Base damage increased to 52.376 from 50.376
Base mana regen per second increased to 1.672 from 1.2
Mana Regen Per Second Per Level lowered from 0.16 to 0.15
Aspect of the Serpent (Passive)

No longer stacks on poisoned unit kill or on Twin Fang casts on enemy champions.
Now, stacks once every 6 seconds (10 times per minute) and for every second that an enemy champion is poisoned.

[Context from Stashu: Stack breakpoints adjusted to 100 / 250 / 500. Overall, these are hit sooner than the old 75/200/400 based on the new mechanics, but are definitely still up for discussion.]

Noxious Blast (Q)

Movement speed buff now 20% at all ranks from 10/15 /20/25 /30%.

[Context from Stashu: Delay changed to actually function as intended (previously hitting between 0.25 and 0.5s). Now has a 0.4s delay. With the reliability changes, it was a bit too reliable, so we set the delay at 0.4.]

Twin Fang (E)

Mana cost changed to 35/45/55/65/75 from 30/45/60/75/90.

Now adds a debuff on the target which amplifies further poison damage by 25% for 5 seconds, stacks up to 2 times (50%).

AP Ratio changed to 0.55 at all ranks from 0.4/0.45/0.5/0.55/0.6

[Context from Stashu: Since we're adding damage elsewhere on the kit (mostly through this debuff), we decided to take a bit out of Twin Fang's late game.

Note: That on live Cass's E DOES NOT buff poison damage, so there is no nerf if they're simply reducing a mechanic that isn't even in the live server yet.

Grand Eleven9 votes

You're right: context IS important.

After months of complaining she lost her poison theme as well as too much power in her E crowding out other abilities ... her new potential poison damage is scaled back instead of her twin fang.

Do you happen to have kids? Have you ever tried to give them something to eat they have already decided hey don't like? After ages of convincing them to just try it ... the fork stops an inch form their mouth and they've already induced gagging.

After all the things that had to go live and "just be tried because PBE isn't a good sample set" this is what's flagged to be scaled back... the frist thing the community has been pandering for for months.

You're right ... context is important.

EffectFX2 votes

I am entirely unsure of what you're complaining about.

Be concise.

Grand Eleven9 votes

context of the community:

In general, weekly threads are negative in 3 areas:

  1. Passive
  2. Lack of poison
  3. Overbudget of power on E.

This has been ongoing for months.

With that in mind lets look at the recent PBE updates

In general this PBE change has two characterisitcs:

  1. A long overdue PBE update rolls out with a series ofchanges that were heatly debated for weeks that helps emphasize poison (see key issue #2).
  2. The new change is nearly immediately scaled back.

So what we have is a community that has been pushing HARD for a certain change in Cassi only to see it arise and get scaled back in a matter of days befoer ever going live. Keep in mind this is the first change that has ever been tuned in the PBE thus far in this rework, and it's one that scales back on a key community request

Clear?

EffectFX3 votes

Believe it or not, it takes time for changes to champions to occur. It's not like Riot's entire balance team throws themselves at 1 champion. It takes time to test these things.

Scaling the passive back is fine in the sense it's better to err on the side of caution.

Grand Eleven7 votes

You asked for the context why people were upset at the nerf. I explained clearly what it was: the fact that the nerf targets the very area the community is asking for buffs in.

If you want to redirect the conversation to "these things take time" I'll simply say: sorry no. Riot is on it's way to being a billion dollar company. it has THOUSANDS of employees. For ONE game. They have the resources, that's a non-argument.
