Why Jayce Nerf hurts Jayce Mid more than Jayce Top
Before Nerf: Q deals 320 + (1.2 x Bonus_AD) After Nerf: Q deals 295 + (1.0 x Bonus_AD) E amplifies Q damage by 40 percent.
Before Nerf: EQ deals 448 + (1.68 x Bonus_AD) After Nerf: EQ deals 413 + (1.4 x Bonus_AD)
16 second cooldown on his E. 9.6 seconds with max CDR. Damage scaling reduced by 28% along with a flat damage of 30. For this being his only poke ability with no significant range (for a poke ability) without E and having this high of a cooldown, the damage nerf is very significant. This effect is even more significant when you consider how it gets increased with armor penetration and lethality.
Jayce mid that builds muramana sacrifices early game power in exchange for a better mid/late game scaling and greater poke ability. I think we can all agree this version of Jayce was neither overplayed nor overwhelming. Yet, this version of Jayce is now crippled because Riot wanted to nerf Jayce top.
I am not saying Jayce top didn't need to see a nerf. It's been pick/banned in almost every competitive game for a while. But there are many other ways Jayce could have been nerfed to specifically target the version of him that was being spammed in top lane. The way Riot went arguably nerfed the balanced version of Jayce more than version that was being spammed top lane. Riot didn't nerf anything about Jayce's ability to bully out melee characters in top during lane phase.
I will be happy to provide a series of potential solutions in which Jayce top could have been nerfed to be less of an overbearing bully in top lane while preserving the version of him that can be played mid lane. And yes, there are several ways to do this that do not involve reworking an ability and do not involve gutting his ability to be a mid-late game poke champion.
