I feel like if you made Azir's ult come out in a cone he'd be alot more balanced for pro play

Cuz he'd lose his nearly-lane-wide full team insec that's honestly a bit too reliable at snatching multiple targets despite the risk it puts him in.

I'm talking like, one spawn point directly behind him where the soldiers all appear and fan out as they move forward to form the straight wall.

Still has team sweep potential, just not as reliable and this way his opponents can somewhat control/predict the direction they'll be flung in if used as an insec.

That would only widen the gap between good and bad players, good players would still be able to catch people reliably while bad players would miss more often.

It's pretty much the opposite of what you want to accomplish with a champion like Azir, who is already very good in the hands of a good player and really bad in the hands of a mediocre to bad player.

Mediocre/bad players would probably not even attempt to insec at all and use it purely for peeling/walling while better players (not even pro) would still insec but only insec 1 or 2 players at a time.

That said, it will undeniably be harder to utilize insec ults on "bad" players. But "bad" players face other "bad" players so Azir's kit in general would probably fare better in terms of his overall DPS vs people who don't know how to position or stand in soldiers mindlessly.

His winrate currently across all ranks is very similar, leading me to believe that "bad" players not being able to insec isn't hurting their winrate substantially or anything.

And if this change happens, he would most likely get buffed in other areas to make up for the lack of current utility on his ult, making him even stronger in the hands of "bad" players vs other "bad" players.

oh trust me, mediocre/bad Azir players do attempt to insec every damn time all the time because they saw it in a pro game and they want to replicate it thinking it's the only way to play Azir

every single time I see an Azir in aram (fairly high mmr) I've to tell them not to do it and simply spam Q-W otherwise they will try to suicide at every opportunity as if they were some kind of assassin or god knows what.

but that's beyond the point, it simply makes it more difficult to use it properly, both offensively and defensively unless you are really already good. it only increases the skill ceiling of the champion, nothing else.

and by good or bad players, I didn't mean bronze vs diamond, I meant experienced Azir players vs inexperienced Azir players. it's fine to have champions with a high mastery curve, but a champion like Azir already has one of the highest mastery curves in the entire game and you probably don't want to increase it even further.

that's my opinion, anyway, it's all theoretical talk without being able to test the changes you suggest

The reason Azir is imbalanced in pro play is because of his entire kit. Nerfing the shuffle does nothing to counter that, the shuffle has to be removed completely. Give him a new E and be done with it.

Really the reason it doesn't work is because his strengths exist in a realm where his weaknesses don't.

Assassins and poke mages suck ass in pro play because assassins are shut down by co-ordination, and poke mages are shut down by "gitting gud".

Azir is the perfect pro play champion because his weakness are non-existent outside soloQ
