An idea for how to fix vayne's true damage conundrum

Vayne's a weird champion to balance because she's supposed to be a tank killer, which means she has to do a lot of damage in the form of %health true damage, but she's not supposed to just be able to 2 or 3-shot squishies, because that's broken and unfun.

So she constantly finds herself in a position where she's extremely strong (last patch) or she's below average (this patch) or she's just fucking terrible (many other patches).

She's never just "on par" with the rest of the adcs. She's either slightly worse, WAY worse, or godlike broken OP.

I think they could fix that by making her true damage scale based on the difference between her health and her target's health, with a minimum damage to targets the same or lesser health than her own. IE - the more health you have over vayne, the more damage she does to you.

This forces a number of things to happen....

  • to maximize her own damage, she wants to remain as squishy as possible - which increases risk.

  • she can build health items if she wants, at the price of damage.

  • she won't do too much damage to other squishies, because they're not building health either.

  • she'll fulfill her role as a tank killer because they'll obviously be building health.

It also leaves room to really double down on her true damage to high-health targets - allowing more leniency with nerfs/buffs because they'll affect the higher end of the damage spectrum (higher difference between her health and her target's) much more than they'll affect her damage toward squishy targets.

I'm no good with numbers and I'm not a game designer, but just for illustration purposes - think of it this way...

  • If vayne has the same total maximum health as her target, she'll do 2/4/6/8% of their maximum health as true damage on every third shot with silver bolts, and her ultimate will give her 16/24/32 additional attack damage towards her target.

  • If vayne's total maximum health is half of her target's total maximum health, she'll do 3/6/9/12% of their maximum health as true damage on every third shot with silver bolts, and her ultimate will give her 18/27/36 additonal attack damage towards her target.

  • if vayne's target has 3x more total maximum health than her or more, she'll do 4/8/12/16% of their maximum health as true damage on every third shot with silver bolts, and her ultimate will give her 20/30/40 additional attack damage towards her target.

Obviously these numbers are just placeholders, but hopefully the general idea becomes clear. There could also be more breakpoints, like if the target has 4x more health, 5x more health... idk. I'm just trying to illustrate my point. I'll leave it to more experienced and design oriented people to really flesh it out.

when will people realize that she is not killing you due to the true damage proc but due to her autos? you are already chunked out pretty severely before the silver procs true damage even kicks in... changing how her true damage works isn't going to change anything about how fast she kills you

You might notice I also mentioned her AD steroid, not just her true damage. I'm aware that both are contributing factors. I never once said in OP "herr derr vayn iz op cuz tru dmg."

You're making your own assumptions and projecting them onto this post. Both her W and her R are contributing factors to the difficulty in balancing her. Hence her nearly 7% win rate drop by removing a VERY small amount of AD from her R - taking her from being godlike to maybe middle of the pack, maybe worse.

no i'm not, because like i said her true damage isn't what is killing you. Her autos are and the fact that her winrate went down by that much from just the simple R change should tell everyone this. Her true damage is fine the way it is. You changing it will not do anything at all only make her be wonkier and make the ability itself feel completely wasted against anything that isn't a tank and even then she would still destroy squishies just as easily as she currently is since they die or are close to dying way before true damage even becomes a factor

here true damage is not the problem look at match history less then 1/3 of it will be her damage.

the problem is a combination of her true damage and how much damage she gets from her ultimate, both of which are points I touched on.

Another problem is ADC itemization in the current state of the game, but if we talk about that we'll have 30 downvotes before we know it, so shhhhhh
