How to build Gangplank in a proper way?

Since they removed the crit from Trinity Force, Gangplank builds feel really awkward. Trinity Force is still non-negotiable because he really needs the Spellblade procs, but now that this item lacks crit, I don't know how I should built him.

Most melee carries rely on stacking attack speed because they spend a lot of time auto-attacking, but Gangplank is the opposite of that. He is a caster. He doesn't auto-attack a lot; most of his damage come from his Q and his barrels. He usually auto-attacks only to activate his passive as auto-attacking for Gangplank is risky most of time and he is better off spamming Q and his barrels. As such, there is not much point in stacking attack speed, he needs cooldown reduction more, which is exactly what he gets when building Triforce and other possible items like Ionian Boots (I also use CDR blues on GP).

The problem is that unlike other AD casters, Gangplank needs to stack crit. Yes, Gangplank can be built critless. An armor penetration based build isn't out of question; item 3078 item 3142 item 3156 the possiblities are numerous. The problem with such build is that it falls off late game in terms of damage due to lack of crits. Unless Gangplank manages to hit every barrel (which will not be realistically possible) he is not going to do a lot of damage even to squishy targets. He really needs crit so that his Q and his autos can scale against every target, not just squishies. Even his barrels do a lot more damage if Gangplank has crit chance. Also, without crit chance, Gangplank cannot waveclear properly at late game.

The problem with that? Well, other than item 3031 and item 3508 there are no crit items with AD, other than item 3185 which is only avaliable to alternative maps like Twisted Treeline and Crystal Scar. Most crit items are attack speed items. When purchasing attack speed items for Gangplank, it always feel like you are putting the attack speed to waste, but Gangplank still needs that valuable 30% critical strike chance.

I've even tried to build two item 3031 but this is stil an awkward way to build Gangplank. It would be really good if Riot either removed Gangplank's reliance on Trinity Force, or if they gave him better synergy with pure AD/armor penetration/CDR builds, or if they just introduced more non-AS crit items.

Back then, this wasn't a problem because Trinity Force had crit. As long as this doesn't happen, I would ask, which build is the best for Gangplank currently?

  1. item 3078 item 3158 item 3031 item 3046 item 3031 (yes, two infinity edges) then one of those items: item 3072 item 3036 item 3142 (other more situtional items: item 3033 item 3156 item 3026)
  2. Same as the above build, except that instead of using two Infinity Edges, I purchase only one, and buy a Statikk Shiv instead of the other infintiy Edge. This gives Gangplank 10% more crit chance and a good passive lighting effect, but gives him less AD.
  3. Just building critless: item 3078 item 3142 item 3158 item 3156 item 3072 item 3026

This is exactly how I feel about Jayce right now. He likes crit just as much as GP, but his crit build is in limbo now due to the Triforce change.

Armor pen/poke Jayce is the most efficient way to build him on SR, but crit Jayce is still stronger overall (much better duelist, still has poke damage, and can actually kill tanks). However, itemization doesn't favor him or GP right now.

If Riot has no intention of giving item 3078 item 3142 their crit back, they need to add some more crit items to the game. For example, a Sheen+crit item would have perfect synergy with their kits.

Replacing BF sword with Sheen on Essence Reaver would be a nice change. This would make it the go to item for AD casters with high mana costs, so they aren't forced to rush Tear.
