Small Leona Change Idea

W: Eclipse <---(Name Change suggestions?)

Active: Leona charges her shield with sunlight gaining bonus armor and bonus magic resistance for 3 seconds. During this duration the ally standing behind Leona will have damage negated to Leona instead as long as they are behind Leona in a range of 300, in addition Leona gains damage reduction.

Bonus Armor: 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 (+ 20% bonus armor) Bonus Magic Resistance: 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 (+ 20% bonus magic resistance) Damage Reduction: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%

How it works: Similarly to Fiora vitals or urgot legs, allies need to stand behind leona in range of 300. If the enemy attacks the ally behind Leona from a different angle, the ally will then take damage unless Leona manages to face the direction of the attack in time.

Reasons behind the idea: Remember the trailer where Leona took the hit for Ahri? I kind of got inspired from that. Leave your thoughts and opinions down below any kind of feedback is appreciated.

I'm glad that one of my ideas I posted are liked for once [galio-happy]

I have 2 concerns about that:

  1. It is invading Braum's niche, protecting allies which are standing behind him with his shield kinda is his shtick.

  2. She is basically the epitome of a vanguard, an attack initiating tank. This ability fits more in the warden playstyle. Making Leona great at initiating attacks as well as make her superior at protecting allies seems a bit much. That's the reasons why Braun can't dash to wards and enemies, they thought that it would give him too much offensive power, when he is supposed to be a protector.

I get it but it's just that in the trailer she seemed that she had a role of catcher and a protector at the same time. And as for how it would work, it wouldn't be similar to braum since she would be able to rotate and change the position of from where she will negate damage.

I don't think it's a problem that this would be a bit similar as Braum Sejuani and TahmKench both have the same passive essentially.

I try to explain it in another way.

Braum's shield is basically the reason why you pick him in the first place, it is a strong tool to defend your allies from projectiles. The skill you are suggesting is not the same, but the end result is similar. You are able to protect your entire team by taking the damage yourself instead of them.

But it would be even stronger than Braum's shield in my opinion. Braum just protects against projectiles, the way you phrased the skill would mean that it defends against any kind of damage as long as your ally stand behind you. Doesn't matter if it's a melee attacking or an AoE mage spell.

If a diver or assassin bypasses Braum's shield to jump on a squishy, then Braum's shield doesn't protect them anymore. He has to rely on his CC to peel for his ally to keep them alive. Meanwhile the same scenario doesn't have a meaningful impact for Leona. As long as her ally stand behind her, the enemy is not able to deal damage to them and has to focus the tank instead.

And I just think that vanguard and warden shouldn't mix too much, it makes someone a jack of all trades. Remember old Maokai? He was exactly that, a mixture of warden with his ultimate and vanguard with the rest of his abilities. He was a generalist and they reworked him in the tank update for exactly that reason. His warden ultimate got removed in favor of an ultimate fitting a vanguard playstyle.

I understand that it seems like a good idea thematically looking at that animation, but I think that it isn't healthy in terms of gameplay.

Fair point, but before I end things there I forgot to mention what thing in terms of clarity. She would only be able to protect one ally, not her whole team and she wouldn't completely negate the damage coming her way but she would have x% damage reduction of the damage she takes but her allies still take no damage unless the enemy hits them from another angle.

But overall I agree that this wouldn't be "healthy in terms of gameplay".

I like this idea, but I also like that Leona is more of a fighter tank than she is a defensive tank. This would not help promote her identity. The reasoning is spot-on, the execution is not.
