Being more impactful as a control mage?

Well I like playing control mages like Lux Velkoz Orianna Azir Viktor and most of the times i play the laning phase very well. Usually I manage to get a cs lead of 20-30 and 2 or 3 kills until minute 15.

What to do now? the enemy midlaner plays safe and only farms under tower and i can't do anything with my lead at midlane. But roaming with these champions is terrible because they are immobile and ganks won't lead to success, especially because at min 15 there are wards everywhere. If i try to group with my bot or toplane to take down the outer turret, my midlane t1 will fall faster than their bot or top outer turret.

Most of the times I'll stay mid. And then i overextend trying to harrass the enemy laner under tower and the enemy jungler appears... Can you give me any advice on how to be more impactful? Thx in advance :)

well most of those aren't control mages lol

Control mages are more along the lines of Zyra Anivia Heimerdinger Taliyah

Orianna is a bit I guess

ya ok lets not argue about the definition though. Let's call them ap-champions instead then

They are contol mages any champ that is AP and blocks off terrain is a control mage

If you can create more pressure in the lane than their mid can, ward up at least one side of the river (ideally both), shove the wave, and then disappear (to a side with vision so you don't walk into their jungler). Start moving toward a side lane and see what happens. You'll force their mid lane to decide between farming under that tower, or leaving that farm behind to follow your roam to the side lane.

oh that's smart I'm gonna try that thx

I main lux and I usually roam a lot once I get the lead ill go up and down the river and ult if possible, most times I go bot lane and try to land adc a double kill

When i see them low at botlane i start walking but they'll be gone before I'm in range. But you're right with lux it's still is possible to have decent map pressure but among the champs i listed up lux is my least played and honestly im not that good at lux either.

I doubt they can get out of your ult range, even if it doesnt kill them, they will be forced to back with low hp. and if they are gone aka backed, then just the same, 3 people can get a tower faster, especially the bot one that has less total hp.

I play similar champs but have opted for more mobility or cc. Like Ziggs Swain Malzahar Diana . So what you do is push in your wave after WARDING and the zone them. Put a good ward or two and stick to that side unless you know where the jungler is(if shaco, wukong, eve, or rengar play back. So push in wave after denying them cs. That way you get a full wave gone, they have to farm under tower, and choose between following your roam or losing farm either way you get a kill by baiting them or win in cs. But leave immediately after zoning and clearing the wave. Make sure to ward and only roam if you know you can get either a map changing kill or objective. If bot is pushed to tower and both the enemy bot is full health. Dont mess with it. If all lanes are pushed then just ward, harrass, or back. If you are really concerned about your tower then run tp and flash. You will find you really dont need it.

And as for wards... so what. You help pressure the map for objectives, flex your genitalia and let them know; its okay. Dont focus on kills. Do that in teamfights. If they are any good they see the mid velkoz missing after 15 seconds. Maybe try to use the river runner mastery too with boots? Point is dont focus on pressing for kills focus on getting a lead for your team. That makes your life easier in the long run over your short term kda.

yes, indeed that is a way to go. But in late game control mages arent as impactful as adc or bruisers (not every bruiser, i think about Warwick Hecarim Jax XinZhao Shyvana, correct me if I'm wrong calling these champs bruiser), unsless you make the perfect play with 5 man Orianna shockwave. In lategame being a little bit ahead in kills and cs does not really impact the outcome of a fight. And i think there is more potential to create map pressure in midgame but i dont really now how. The ideal case is to use your lead to support other lanes and help them winning theirs, but how to do so?

Control mage should be seen more as poke. You dwindle down the enemies health then zone them off to create picks and power plays for objectives. If you are bronze then its not gonna work but high silver and up control mages do great

You get the towers and create gold advantages with towers and kills

Roam if ur ahead and ur laner is hiding behind tower. Wait for ur jungler to be botside, shove ur wave and 4 man botlane. Wards cant stop that, let someone tp in and kill them. If they dont then kill bot and take tower. Now bot goes mid or top to take that tower etc

Don't be afraid of roaming if you are ahead. IF you have pushed them to tower and they are playing too safe for you to punish them, that is 1 less person to catch you out. If you see mid and bot lane are accounted for and maybe even have seen where the jungler is/was, you know its safe to roam. Ward in a few key areas to gain info on their jungler even if you don't necessarily feel safe going to another lane

"If i try to group with my bot or toplane to take down the outer turret, my midlane t1 will fall faster than their bot or top outer turret." Why? Are you leaving when minions are eating away at your turret?

Glory971 votes

No the enemy midlaner will probably stay and pushes against a defensless tower, and that's more effective than going top/bot and pushing 2v1/3v2 trying to take down tower

AdeBug1 votes

hah what? as I was saying in a previous comment, going off your statement that bot backed before you got there: 3 people are pushing a defenseless tower, mind you the weakest tower in the game, that is less effective than 1 player, mind you a MAGE (weak aa), pushing a defenseless tower? really...
