Bring Back "Old" Bots

Space Bum··42 votes·7,372 views

There was a period of time a year or two ago where bots were doing some unpredictable stuff. I think it got patched the same week. I distinctly remember have 3 of them tower dive me prelevel 6 and I think my team might have lost. Can this come back?

Bots really need a higher difficulty lvl, as they stand right now they do nothing other than help new players in the extreme early stages and after that serve as nothing more but punching bags. They never adapt their builds, shouldn't be too hard to have bots choose between 2~3 different builds depending on the type of damage that is most prevalent in the enemy team. Bots also very rarely even push turrets, i have seen bots push a wave to the turret and then leave even though no one was anywhere near them even when there are 4 of them in lane and all but 1 person is visible in other lanes. They never randomly go and kill jungle mobs and they never place wards, they have access to trinkets so there is no excuse to them using wards in predetermined places at the very least

GaleWinUnleashed5 votes

Bots do place wards, actually. They're programmed to drop a ward every so often on their way through the jungle, and they'll also ward lane bushes sometimes.

SlushieDee2 votes

In over 100 bots games, I've seen bots ward a total of ONCE. And that was to get vision of me to hit a targeted ability after I ran into a bush.

I've got ya beat in experience on this one, I'm afraid =P

+1 Just for that GLA music.

Nah. I think you guys updated bots after the HA facelift.

You should get together some riot players and take over for the AI's one or two games... Then this guy won't complain about bots not being challenging for him.

Bots do seem very stale and often very stupid. It would be nice if Rito make a doom bot type think with hard difficulty. Intermediate is like for lvl 15 and under

This would be good. Not really like doom bots where Morgana shot like 1000 Q's at a time, but just smarter and more unpredictable AI

Before this I would like to see all champions having a bot version. The pool consists of very old champions and none have been added in years.

Nixtarma1 votes

Lucian actually has an intermediate-level bot on the Twisted Treeline.

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

Unfortunately many champions have mechanics that would be extremely difficult for an AI to use competently. It would take a massive upgrade to get some of those into the system. Can you imagine how much work it would take to get a bot to use a Thresh lantern? Or have a Bard bot run around collecting chimes, while leaving shrines for his laners to use? And what about Teemo bot; would his passive go completely unused?

Double Rainbow1 votes

You're right, but if I have to choose, I'd rather have Thresh without using lantern, than no Thresh at all. He'd be still useful. Sometimes I want to practice for example Kata vs Diana lane, it would help a lot to have them.

BLU Medic2 votes

You don't need to add all champions, but a LOT of the technical stuff is already there. Nidalee and Caitlyn bots already know how to place traps for example. And there are champions that would just need basic skill shots, like Vel'Koz or Xerath, or ones that are mostly melee, like Tryndamere. Heck, even someone like Kassadin could work, since Lucian bots know to use their dashes occasionally.

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

I'd be impressed if they made a Twitch bot that used stealth to flank you, rather than just running directly at you as most bots do.

Are you referring to doom bots?

Space Bum27 votes

No. I'm referring to the period of time when they were reworking bots to "better mimic actual gameplay" During that period bots were tweaked a couple times. One of the patches made them bloodthirsty and they would dive people in groups.

junglerboy166 votes

Sounds amazing, I wish I had known about it at the time...

SlushieDee2 votes

They actually should institute something like "Hard" bots where they actually co-ordinate as a team and employ more mechanically advanced strategies and champions. I wish we could see bots going legendary. Hard mode Azir Bot, anyone?

Kitten of Evil3 votes

Bring back Doom Bots! That was fun. I won against the 5 star doom bots exactly once the whole time that temporary mode was up.

Space Bum3 votes

Same. Just once. We had to back door them. Pretty sure it was the only effective way.

Hrud3 votes

I remember the pre-update bots. Back then, if you where solo top, you WHERE going to get dived lvl 2 by the bots. It WAS happening, and you had better be prepared for it.

I kind of dislike the new bots. While they don't really fall for the same dumb tricks as before, they are also depressingly passive, and don't group up and roam quite like they used to. They are also wayyyy too good at dodging stuff.

Yorukin2 votes

The old bots also decided that as soon as the first tower fell, it was time to get roaming. As unpredictable as it could be, it was also rather annoying to suddenly face a 3v1 lane mid because I could roflstomp the Ryze bot as Zyra.

And yeah, the dodging and reaction speeds could probably be tweaked. It's possible to be following a minion wave to flank a bot and they won't notice you until you're within their personal vision range. By contrast, their reflex dodges can outta hand. I was once playing Nautilus support in a bot game, and missed a kill because the bot perfectly sidestepped an anchor from less than two Teemos away. I don't exactly recall the bot being named Neo.

Space Bum6 votes

Think about the way you expect bots to act. Going 30-0 is crazy easy. Now play that way vs something half competent. I don't know if you remember this but the old Annie and Ryze bot used to 100-0 anything that came near them. There was a change to bots a while back that made them do some crazy stuff but they patched it.

Was in a lane with a Brand bot, he kicked my ass. Also if they have a Blitz... no matter how bad the bots are, if you're in the center of their team you're dead. His grab was like aimbot, he didn't hit any minions. We almost lost that game. sobs

I am someone who plays AI games on the regular.

I really want there to be "expert bots" that do stuff like what they did before. Tower diving is one thing I would like to see brought back. Also they used to ward bushes rather than face checking bushes. It made me learn the importance of the red trinket. I also want to see an AD mid laner just for some diversity in that lane. Talon & Pantheon would be ideal candidates. I'd also like to see more invisibility using champions on the bot's side of things. Twitch would be ideal for this and Talon too. As of right now Wukong is the only experience with invisibility new players will get. Programming an AI to jungle will indeed be difficult to do. I would love to see this but due to the difficulty and how exploitable this can be I won't wish for this in the very near future. I'd also like to see Alistar bot's AI fixed or have him replaced by a different champion. As it stands now Alistar bot is the weakest link in the AI line up. I've had it happen where I would be dead to rights, caught in a Malzahar ult only to have Alistar headbutt me out the ult and ultimately allow me to escape with my life. At the very least have Malzahar bot make an automated response in all chat saying "Report Alistar bot, assisting enemy team." Oh, and program Blitzcrank to head bottom lane. That's where you frequently see him in PvP so it should be where you should frequently see him in AI games.

Spacesuit Spiff1 votes

Fun fact: if you do a 1v5 custom game they do all sorts of weird things, like pointlessly running through turrets or intentionally denying pentas.

Silversurfer221 votes

We made AI, we made BOTS, we know how CPU works! As God made us, God made humans, God know how WE works! Unless if TERMINATOR coming after us! Hahahahaha. We programmed the BOTS...but at higher level...it's HELL!

Zmann1 votes

would love something fun like that to entertain me after a tough loss in ranked

Eeyore1 votes

Bots have never been unpredictable. They just used to be predictably stupid. It was always predictable that they would tower dive you - because their "omg the enemy is low" logic out-weighed their "stay behind your minions" logic.

Space Bum5 votes

I'll have to disagree. I have been playing since season 1. There was old bots, there are the new current bots, and then there were a few different versions between the two when they were transitioning to the current bots. It was sometimes around when HA got it's facelift. During this short time there was a version of bots that were a lot more aggressive but it got changed.

NoMonku1 votes

I think the problem with them diving, though, is how their ai is programmed. From all my times playing against bots, once their hp reaches a certain threshold, all they do is retreat, even IF all they had to do was turn around and lick you to kill you. If they tower dove all it would result in is the would die and give you an easy triple kill, without you having to actually do anything.

Also I think a problem with you having less fun with bots is because of the increase in the champion pool. Before I used to fear Annie Bots and I still do, but I never run into her anymore if I do play bots because there is a bigger pool to pull from. They should probably add more champions that have kill threat that are allow them to easily blow you up with a spell rotation.

few ideas for bot games

  1. have bots that actually try to farm properly so we can practice last hitting in customs without pushing the wave
  2. minions should spawn at 30s because obviously bots arent doing level 1s, waiting till 2 minutes in a custom to start practicing cs when im only doing the hardest part (first 5 minutes) means im essentially wasting half my practice time
  3. bots should build logical items and runes/masteries, for some reason when i pick a generic mid like lux on intermediate they build sightstone or chalice first always even if im an ad, makes practicing combos and trying to get a feel for damage output before a real game impossible
  4. give us the option to choose which lane bots go to, and have them do normal lanes (adc/sup bot, tanky top, mage/assassin mid), maybe make the bots queue 4v4 since bots cant jungle and some people want to practice top champions in a 1v1
  5. let us pause or restart customs (not sure how this would work with the servers), i like to warm up with 2-3 customs of last hitting till 5 minutes with my main champions and having to exit the game, reload a bot game, make 3 intermediate bots, go through champ select and then wait 2 minutes for the game actually makes the wait longer than the warmup time

I agree bring back doom bots :^)

I have never found a point when bots weren't predictable.

At least now they put up a better fight, slightly surprising me shouldn't matter, were skilled players, by the time a newbie picks up on how the bots operate they should be moving on to PVP anyway.

99% of the time, their ai are predictable as heck. Its at the point where i can predict where they are and can blast an mf ult through a wall with no vision and get a kill. That being said. . . Ai have their random chances at being scary as hell, in the most unexpected ways. Things like:

  1. Walking past my team while we were doing an early dragon at low health, securing a double kill and first dragon in one go
  2. Managing to successfully towerdive for a pre-6 kill
  3. Having an udyr flash through a wall to give chase to a teammate at 4 health But i think that the one thing that never fails to put the fear of god into you is the general reaction time of the AI, and their ability to be exactly in the best place at the worst time. I'm talking about all five members of their team suddenly appearing as you round a corner, and having every single one of their skillshots form concentric circles around you like the dartboard from hell, erasing you before you have time to think "oh shit"
PerishSoftly1 votes

I'd love to see options where a Bot would actually jungle and gank lanes. As is, that's the biggest thing that people need to learn about. Often when you first join into PvP from VsAI, you are blindsided when a screaming, spear wielding Asian leaps out of the bushes at level 3 and kills you and your lane-mate with his allies.
