I don't understand MR

I'm getting sick of league atm. I just had a game where I went against an AP top lane, so I built 2 MR items and had 99 MR, but I still exploded against my opponent who wasn't building burst items. yet I despite my opponent having less than half my MR was twice as tanky as me. I just don't get it, and this happens when I go mid too. If my opponent builds even ONE MR item, I'm worthless, but when I build an MR item, it doesn't do jack all for me.

MR reduces magic damage by MR/(100+MR). So 99 MR reduces magic damage by 99/199 or 49.7%.

This means your EHP is effectively 2x your HP. You're taking half damage so it's like having double health. If you build no health items all that MR is pretty damn useless because it's amplifying a really low health pool. If your opponent builds 1 HP item and 1 MR item they'll have more EHP than you and be tankier.

It also depends on what champion you're playing, some champions just deal more damage than others.

You need at least 200MR AND 4KHP to really soak up damage from most AP mages lol
