Why Riot Games really is the most player-focused game company out there (server relocation topic)

League started about 6 years ago as a small, independent company making a MOBA with a dedication towards its player base.

Nobody could have predicted its growth, even across the USA, let alone the entire earth.

Do you know how hard it is to change servers just so the USA can play together, unified, and still have stable connection? Let's talk a little about what this entailed.

  • **Redesigning the actual server infrastructure - ** This was fundamentally rebuilt so that you and I could have a more stable connections (though none is perfect). Not patching, not tweaking, rebuilding. Wow.

That's awesome.

  • **Corroborating with several dozens of ISPs for pipelining the network - ** My gosh. For me, a player, Riot has gone out and met with my ISP so that I could have a streamlined route to the server. Same goes for all of you. This means that even if your ping is higher, it will feel lower because the connection is more stable. Optimization for everybody's connection.

That's awesome.

  • **Server location - ** Moving to Chicago, so everyone can generally have ping around ~60ms, give or take (except Alaska and Hawaii; that will be addressed later, I hope).

That is awesome.

Doing something like this takes an incredible amount of dedication and work, and for no other reason than to help out the playerbase. THAT is customer support.

And best of all, while a second east coast server could have been easily implemented, splitting America in two, a central, single location was chosen for the sole sake of having our nation unified together in League.

I love it. Thank you.

Thank you for being patient with your community.

Thank you for answering all of our expectant questions.

And most of all, thank you for delivering.

Soon(tm) has now become Very Soon(tm), and I cannot ask for more.

I'd happily keep 80 east coast ping in exchange for ACTUAL customer support, really. Obviously the new servers are nice, but I wouldn't choose new servers over actually getting human-to-human help with problems with the game. Instead, we get continued copy and paste messages and no appeals process for punished players.

Except they took several Y...E...A...R...S to do this. A player focused company would've addressed the problem the second it began. I'm happy as everyone else but come on.

Sure the NA roadmap is a great idea but.... if I were them I'd have been like "yeah okay we need NAE and NAW servers until we can figure out a big solution ... with free transfers between both (if you are already in one that is otherwise regular RP price to switch) ...

Well you have to admit, the growth League and Riot experienced within a couple of years is tremendous, they had to evolve from small garage developers to a huge company - i cant even imagine how much work they had to put into their serves to keep ANYTHING running. Besides the European Split (^and i know what I´m talking about) went anything but smooth, they´ve learned from it.

Just like EUW (which got his urgently needed Amsterdam-Server), you just have to be a little more patient, if they telliing us they´ll fix it, they will! It may take some time, but better you do something slow and stable but fast and with tons of problems. ^^ (#Tribunal xD)

Er, they made a pretty poor call on server relocation. The correct way to handle this issue, as shown by other games with smaller populations than League (aka the supposed issue with two servers), is two servers.

The rest I agree with. Their intention is great, their execution is.....not so much.
