Halving the XP to hit level 30 was a double-edged sword, wasn't it?

Long story short, this account is banned, and some friends of mine are helping me work on my low self-esteem and resultant attitude problems on a new account.

It got me to thinking about how Riot halved the XP to hit level 30 a while back, and I realized that it's not entirely a positive, especially for actually new players.

  • It means less overall gameplay experience before getting matched versus better players.

  • Less games played = less IP earned = less content available en route to 30. In the end, it makes the halved XP something of a cash grab since it means people will be more inclined to spend RP on champions.

  • Unrelated to the XP, but keystones make matchmaking around the -teen levels a lot more volatile than it should be.

  • Making tier 2 runes 1 IP each was only a band-aid fix for the issues runes cause, honestly. I know Riot said there's a rune update coming eventually, but who knows when that'll actually happen since the rune system is part of the game's money-making paradigm.

Just a few thoughts.

Riot really should have slashed IP prices across the board in addition to the XP values to match.

IP prices are just totally unjustifiably high in genrral, the entire system is based off of a model revolving around the beta/Season 1's release schedules where multiple champs would be released every 2 weeks. That model hasn't changed even when champions come out every 2-3 months now. There are still 6300 up champs from season 2, five years ago.

I'm fully convinced that the only thing keep Riot from doing so is they've dug themselves a hole, in the sense that they have no adequate way to compensate the people who've put up with the unrealistic prices up to this point.

That, or they're relishing the fact people are going to buy RP because of the terrible IP pricing because money, yo.

You are correct. You hit the mark. Unfortunately the gaming experience to hit level 30 has not been issue since they allowed you to get from 20 to 30 with co-op vs. AI. On Season 1 you had to play vs. humans in normal games from 20 to 30. Removing this aspect was really bad idea, as people has no experience in real game play, and have false expectation of number of kills and tactics.

This would not be a problem if there would be some method limiting access to Ranked Games until you have played certain number of games in normal draft. Honestly, I would think this kind of limitation better than the leveling experience. I do understand that leveling time should be reduced, as you have limited runes, and limited mastery picks. Only useful aspect of those 30 levels is lack of access to Ranked games.
