Thoughts on Galio Teaser

So with the teaser reveal of Galio getting shown today, it's got me pretty hyped. So I thought I'd make a post about my feelings towards him and see what your respones are:

  • Clarity - I don't know about the rest of you but I had the hardest time trying to figure out what the hell Galio is suppose to be. Is he primarily a tank? A mage? He's melee, but casts spells like a mage, but also has his ult which leans towards tank but also his W which leans towards a support but not really since it only heals hi- you see what I'm getting at? Through the reveal and Q&A I finally get an answer: Anti-mage Warden. You can argue that he's still like this as of right now but to me I just don't see it.

  • Abilities - So from the video I could make out 3 of his 4 abilities: one is similar to a Vi ult, that being a charge and a knock-up knock-down move, a similar E ability that gusts wind at an enemy (kinda reminded me of Zul'Jin's W from HotS) but from the looks of it may also lead to a knock-up as well, and an ult that works similar to Shen's but instead still targets the location and knocks back all enemies from the area. As well, Rioter Reav3 also talked about him keeping his AoE taunt, which I'm fairly pleased about since it was his most iconic part of his kit. As for his passive though I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same. I mean for an anti-mage warden it kinda makes sense but I really wouldn't miss it if it got replaced by another passive.

  • Appearance/Skins - His base appearance is....meh. I will say it's FAR better than he is now, especially with him not looking like the generic gargoyle look but still having that feel, but even then I just don't find it appealing (side note: his new look reminds me of Terrorblade from Dota 2. No seriously, look up an image of terrorblade, compare it to the new Galio and tell me that they don't look similar, if not exactly the same). His skins on the other hand are drop dead gorgeous. Commando looks bad ass, debonair is fun, enchanted is amazing, hextech is stellar, but by far the best one has to be the Gatekeeper. I just dropped my jaw when I saw it, it's amazing!

  • Voice - I'm kinda at an impasse with this. On the one hand, it's better and actually makes Galio sound different from Skarner ( I mean they have the same voice actor but I swear they sound exactly the same. At least the voice actor for Elise, Zyra, Shyvana and Fiora made them all sound distinct and recognizable to their character). On the other, from the very little dialogue in the teaser, it just doesn't sound fitting. He's suppose to be, at least when represented in the art teaser, a towering sentinel so I'd expect a deeper voice but here I kinda get this high school big shot jock feel, which I don't like a lot. Idk, I just get this feel like he's Demacia's version of Draven without the ego levels of Draven.

So those are just my thoughts but what are yours? What's your view so far on the gargoyle's rework?

My main gripe is with his color scheme....it's fcking grey and some bright ass yellow for fcks sakes, it's making my eyes bleed.

I like almost everything about the rework. His design, his personality, and his theme. I don't really like old Galio because he's so gloomy and boring. Nothing really pops out from him besides the fact that he's a gargoyle. The rework really turned that upside down. His kit also feels pretty clunky to me. I hope that is solved with the rework.

I think it feels clunky because Riot at the time didn't know how to make Galio a anti-mage tank. He leans more towards the mage part rather than the tank right now but with the rework they say he's more focused on being a vanguard I think. One thing I will say though is I'm actually going to miss him only in URF. He's actually pretty insane there. Other than that, I'm just happy he's getting reworked into something that I actually play (well and the removal of that stupid shield of his)

I think people have way too much emotional connection to the old designs of champions (visual and gameplay). Sure if Galio was a shadow isle or Noxian champion I could argue that the old gargoyle stone bat thing would have been a better fit (with different color scheme)... but he's from Demacia and damn he got what he deserved. The visuals are amazing! A huge stone sentinel is such an awesome and fitting addition to the demacian roster.

I'm glad I saved that gatekeeper skin shard >:D

Who's your main? Imagine if they were changed this drastically, then would you be okay that your main basically got replaced by a completely different character? Just because old Galio doesn't have a huge player base doesn't mean we should kick dirt in their face because non-Galio players prefer it. Most of the people saying they like Galio better now admit that they still probably won't play him so why would you appease to that portion of the player base?

If my main got a VU that changed her completely, I'd be fine with that if Riot thinks she deserves a VU. Let's say Leblanc for example (one of my faves), she could use a stroke of new paint. I wouldn't mind at all if her oldish visual design got scrapped and replaced by something more fitting for her theme (from both lore and gameplay point of view).

Blue/yellow flying bat does not fit a demacian context as well as a huge white/gold colossus. If LoL wasn't built on top of lore, Galio's old visual theme would have worked as an individual character design without ties to anything. However that is not the case.

This is coming from a player that is somewhat interested in the game lore and character stories.

And it's not about pleasing Galio mains (or any other mains when it comes to other VGUs). When it comes to visuals it's about making a character that appeals to broad audiences so that people are occasionally willing to play the character.

Do you think people honestly play Galio because he's Demacian? When I started the game I gravitated towards champions that I thought looked cool. I don't look at Lux and think "F*** YEAH, DEMACIA!" I look at Lux and see a blonde girl who shoots rainbows. I'm not saying the lore isn't interesting, but not everyone who plays League is interested in it. So to completely overhaul a character like this is downright disrespectful to those who play Galio because they think his gargoyle theme is cool.

Riot created a fantasy world filled with lore and they are now modernizing old champions to visually make sense in their respective factions.

Strong backgrounds for champions are important to build a connection between characters and players. Old Galio probably just didn't have enough potential as a flying bat gargoyle. Also his natural tanky role is more clear now that he is an actual colossus.

His base skin reminds me of something I'd see in Smite. Does anyone else get that vibe or is it just me?

I think his ult is what's giving you that vibe :P

Lmao, I just realized why that is, Thor's ult.
