AP Off-Tank Nasus would be legit, wouldn't it?

Like, item 3020 item 3143 item 3151 item 3110 item 3065 item 3001 and then get a bunch of Q stacks as well. Considering Nasus only has 1 Ability that scales with Physical Damage, you'd think getting a bunch of Magic Pen and whatever AP those items come with would be a better option.

Autoattacks scale with physical damage.

Soul Eater heals him for damage dealt by his basic attacks.

Spirit Fire reduces the enemies armor, allowing his basic attacks to deal more damage.

Fury of the Sands increases his AD, synergizing with all of the above.

While you could purchase a couple AP items, it's generally more efficient to rely on Trinity Force (or Iceborn Gauntlet if you prefer) as your main damage item.

Typically, I would recommend something like: item 3047 or item 3111 or item 3009, item 3110 item 3065 item 3078 item 3742 item 3512

Nasus works quite well with Spellblade and critical strike chance (for the reasons listed above), so Trinity Force is a very strong item on him.

People used to play AP Nasus for fun years ago. It depends what you mean by legit.

Legit, as in being almost Full Tank and dealing 10k more damage to champions than the next-highest champion.

Firstly, your screen shots of you out damaging the rest of your team is anecdotal and only represents one game - it's useless as evidence of AP off tank nasus being a 'legit' thing.

A few more points: -Your build seems to rely on getting to full build. This is far from guaranteed and I feel like your build wouldn't take advantage of early power spikes well.

-AP Nasus' main strength over non-AP Nasus is that he has a massive aoe mid range poke nuke. It has reasonable scaling (0.6 initial, 0.12 per second afterward). You are far from guaranteed to get much out of the secondary damage as most people will just move out of its AoE.

-The only other AP scaling Nasus has is on his ult which scales at 1% of max hp per 100 AP. The problem with this is it requires you to stick to your target in order to achieve any meaningful damage with it.

-Your inclusion of Abyssal Scepter and Liandries indicates to me that you'd like to grind people down with your ult. Unfortunately you'd gain more damage if you just built a triforce instead and used it to whack people, you'd also be faster and better able to stick to people or disengage as you needed. Beyond that another defensive item would keep you alive longer allowing you to get more damage from your Q and base damages.

TLDR: -AP Nasus has a different job than off-tank Q farm Nasus. Mixing the two together makes for a weaker set up. Choose one and commit to it if you want to be "legit".

It's underwhelming.

I spammed AP Nasus in the Poro King mode, and often had the most damage to champs in the game, even if I lost. His poke is absolutely devastating; long range, large AoE, high initial damage then burn afterward. It's got a long CD and it drains mana quickly, but luckily item 3174 and item 3165 exist. So all during the first half of the match, I was just laying down zones of murder.

Then that phase ended and teamfighting began. After that, AP Nasus isn't really good for that much. You throw down your E once, maybe twice a teamfight. You wither someone who's either diving your carries or on the enemy ADC. You ult and wade into the middle of things, hoping to hit as many champs as you can for maximum sustain like a Swain. The trouble is that you need a lot of AP for your ult to sustain you well, but you also need enough defensive stats to keep you alive long enough to sustain. It's difficult to get both unless you're ahead.

The appeal of AP Nasus is his laning phase. It's oppressive as hell. You lay down E, clear the minion wave, and take a large chunk of the enemy laner all at the same time. Wither and constant harassment makes sure the enemy laner won't farm much. It's sort of like jungle Nunu, where your goal isn't necessarily to become strong and carry, but to make sure your opponent is even more useless than you are when teamfighting begins. You ever see a Yasuo with 25 farm and no kills fifteen minutes into the game? He might as well AFK for all the good he's doing in teamfights. That's what laning against AP Nasus does.

I've actually been trying this myself.

I've been building a rod of ages and a ryalis cyristal scepter as my 2 go to ap items.

For defensive items I would go with a randuins omen, a spirit visage or abyssal scepter for magic resist.

As for other items I think it depends on the enemy tram comp, if they have a tanky team I would build a liandras torment and a void staff.

For me, this is still an ongoing experiment, tinkering with runes, masteries and build.

In a custom game I tried out a build where I ended up with about 950 ap and the damage from e was about 700 on cast with over 150 dps and I got the ult upto 14-15%(total).

I would just keep trying out different setups untilnyou find one that works for you.

Good luck.

Well, with that build it's really like a classic bruiser except you replace item 3078 + defensive item with item 3151 + item 3001 . Then it's up to you. Do you prefer more stickiness, 10% cdr and a big bonus to Q or to spice up your damage with a bunch of magic damage, also getting more waveclear power for sieges?
