@RiotMeddler/Repertoire/FeralPony/Balance team, we need a centralized discussion thread on Karma

**Update, 24/1/2016 ** The amount of Karma discussions that have popped up within this week is massive!

20/1/2016

Over the past few days, there has been an influx on thread and discussions concerning Karma. Ever since the immobile mages update has been scheduled or proposed for June 2016, a number of Karma fans have now come forward to ask if she is included within the list of updates. Aside from FeralPony who has mentioned potentials and opportunities for Karma, no one else has had any idea about said champion and some of have kept quiet.

Every time I see a Karma thread, the views and upvotes that it receives are meager and usually the thread sinks in a few hours later. I don't think people are uninterested, but that since so little people know much about Karma and she small a little player base, people are inclined to ignore her. Since a number of you from the balance team (or anyone involved) have motioned concerned players to share their thoughts about her, I believe it's high time we have a centralized thread for any Karma related discussion, so that we can keep track of the progress, feedbacks, complaints and concerns that player have for her.

There has been 7 topics over the span of 20 days and I've taken the initiative to compile a list of Karma-related threads for you to see. Bear in mind I'm only keeping track of up-to-date posts, since we are in the preseason, every argument or feedback should be properly applied to the given context.

Feedbacks on tweaks to Karma's kits

_A player expresses his thoughts about how Karma's 5.10 changes had deepened her dentity crisis as a mage/support and how her reworked had split up the fanbase in to two different conflicting groups _

Threads inquiring about Karma's inclusion for an update

_Non-related thoughts about Karma's gameplay, usually concerning lore _

An article written to explain the ongoing issues of Karma in League

I've also taken the initiative to dig up and compile certain ask.fm questions concerning Karma from various Rioter's pages, and included a rework-brainstorming idea that I and another player had liaised up briefly last year to present.

Taken from FP's page

With Karma being stagnated and in a constantly underpowered but versatile state, are you considering Karma for another rework, even if just a partial one, for the immobile mage update? If so, would you be open for suggestions from an ex-Karma main?

I dont think a full rework is needed, but there is totally opportunity for the champion. I absolutely wouldn't oppose any suggestions, my team specifically isn't equipped for any type of large rework (Ex - we have no artists) but I think especially in terms of differentiating her from other champions there is some room. Good ideas are always welcome :)

Another question from FP's page

I dont think the question that I asked was pretty controversial, hostile or trolly or anything but harmless. It was a question about Immobile Mages and how you considered Karma as one and what you will do to make her unique. So are you not answering because you think that question is controversial?

Your question wasnt controversial at all. 95% of the questions I dont avoid, its more a volume issue where I have more questions than I can reasonably answer. She could be considered in the immobile mage camp, but shes kinda more of a mage/support hybrid. I dont think we'd need to do anything to her in the unique playing experience as she is already pretty unique to play as. Strategically though, why youd select her in particular beyond if she's just really powerful atm though is a much tougher question I dont have a solid answer for. No idea if she'll be included in the update, but suggestions are always appreciated.

Okay..so we talk about voice performance. [...] (A bunch of consequent comments and questions about VO and Voice Actors. Pastebinned: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=HHbgAyjf )

Well. I have certainly have no doubt about your passion for this topic. I dont personally have a stake in which voice actor does a position or not, as I tend to look at the output moreso than who is doing the input. Though, I like Danielle, I think shes nice and did well on old Karma.

Voices, and the characters they represent, are very nuanced topics. Tone is incredibly subjective, and has a million and one different ways a subtle change can change expression.

As I mentioned in the first answer, there are several reasons why a voice can change. It could be several of them meshing together. It could be wanting to separate a character from others with similar voices (perhaps with Ashe, all three sisters sounded too similar? Hazarding a guess.). I can't say, I don't have the context behind the people who made the decisions- but Im sure they had their reasons. We don't aim to change for the sake of change.

A lot of your examples point towards updates that are over two years old now at this point. I know it doesnt excuse the errors then, but we are trying to do much better these days. We were young then. We'll revisit them someday, but I cant say in good confidence theyre worth looking at over other characters.

We've made our mistakes. Karma and Trundle were especially good ones that people still ding us on. Theyre not bad characters, but theyre not fully the character that was known before. We'll still make mistakes, but please trust that we're making efforts to not repeat them.

And no, I dont think MsPudding was Sivir.

Taken from many months back, only part of the original question is shown on Ghostcrawler's page

Surely you would have something to say about this or that you feel similarly in some lines? The Karma fanbase is small and its even smaller for Beta Karma fans. Surely you can reach out to them. Im even willing send it pages worth of Karma discussion to have you talking about her to the team again.

I wouldnt say she is in a state that is acceptable to us. I wasnt here for the original rework, so Id just be guessing at the goals, but we've had a lot more experience with reworks since then. She isnt actively being worked on at the moment, which I say not so you lose hope, but just in the spirit of being transparent, but we will get to her. >

There are many other Karma sources out there, but Im only compiling things that I can recall. Perhaps some other Karma players would like to chip in with the list of compiled discussion we have on hand.

FYI, before any of you comment...

Karma will be receiving mana cost buffs to help her in keeping up with the current meta, courtesy of Ricklessbandon

Karma

Focused Resolve (W) mana cost lowered to 50/55/60/65/70 from 70/75/80/85/90

You should also read on Karma's rework thoughts that was released back in 2012, to get an idea of what went on then.

For those of you who are interested in finding out her old abilities and old lore, they are included in the link below,

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Karma/Background

That is all for now, I'll be reserving several spaces for discussion and doing intermittent works to update everything, so that we'll have a compiled list feedbacks to openly discuss.

Once again, constructive feedbacks are preferred. No belittling or standard DKF arguments needed.

Again, thank you for compiling this one. I've gone through my posts and tried finding something relevant, that hasn't been mentioned in your linked posts already. All I could find was these:

  • THIS was my first ever post on the boards. It explains my general views on karma and motivation for the rework ideas.
  • Rework 1: My first attempt at solidifying Karma's identity and giving more depth/uniqueness to her playstyle.
  • Rework 2: You have seen that one already. I borrowed RQ, W and E from old Karma and pushed it into new Karma, to see what happens.
  • Here's my just posted thoughts on 5.10 and the impact.

Read and use them, as you see fit.

Thanks for sharing your posts, I'm gonna put a few up there. I like your first post, it's very well written!

SilverSquid1 votes

Thank you very much. It took me literally weeks to make that one.

2 other things:

  1. I remembered a buddy of mine on the EU boards, who proposed an intriguing rework. He reintroduced mantra charges and allows base abilities to be "double charged". The first charge would add a "duality" aspects to a spell. A shield would become a damage spell, etc. If two charges were used for the same spell it would become a true "ultimate" in terms of power and values. This solved both the problem of Karma fans wanting the 2 charges back, but also having spells that feel impactful and exciting enough for Riot. If you are interested in Karma rework ideas, he posted it here.

  2. You might want to use a little edit trick for this post. Instead of posting the full link like this. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/flYub2Vi-another-karma-rework-thread You could use the "insert link" button: Another Karma rework thread I really like your collection, but with multiple links, it becomes hard to read.

Evenstar1 votes

Thanks for the suggestion, I've polished the thread abit, and have come across Inquisitor Karma's rework thread. Unfortunately, I personally downvoted this one for the fact that he turned Karma in to a melee mage, lmao. But if you do come across Karma threads that may be help, please do share, I'll update everything intermittently.

SilverSquid1 votes

The thread looks a lot nicer now, good job!

I was talking about EDYinnit's rework, not the Inquisitor Karma one. I don't like his rework either, because it seems so confused on her thematic and just introduces plain buffs in nearly every ability without tradeoffs. And makes her melee on top of that? I don't get it. EDYinnit's rework doesn't have nice formating, but his ideas are more thought through, and I love his Balance/Enlightenment approach.

That being said, I will answer this post whenever I stumble over something you might find useful. Or if I write it myself, lol.

The way I see Karma:

Passive - Current passive should be either moved to her ult or removed in favor of a 2 charge mantra. Change here isn't essential, but I'd welcome it.

Inner Flame - Basic poke ability, fine as it is. Soulflare - Nice nuke, good counter play, fine as it is.

Focused Resolve - The risk/reward on this skill seems a little off to me, for a spell that offers fairly low/average damage, CC and utility it feels too risky. It would be nice if this skill kept the rooted target revealed or maybe a slightly increased tether range. Or a more interesting direction would be to add some ally targetting functionality to the skill, add something nice for Karma support mains. Renewal - I find the extra root on this ability unnecessary and particularly underwhelming for a mini ult (which is what her mantras are, right?). The damage component this ability had was nice and often made R+W a better choice than R+Q, something that can't really be said for the current state of this ability. I suggest instead of an additional root, the ability should deal additional damage based on Karma's own missing hp. I think along with the missing hp heal that would make the spell feel better and more useful.

Inspire - Decent spell, has clear purpose and I'd say is fine as it is. Defiance - This spell... was my favourite until it lost its damage :'(. I know Riot won't hear it (even in the unlikely event they read this thread), but my suggestion is a revert. That shield bomb was EVERYTHING, no other champ did that and it felt so good. The spell actually FELT Defiant, and the way I saw Karma it was character defining. I would say however, instead of the big burst of ms, I think a longer lasting flat ms increase like Janna's tailwind around the target would be a cool direction (Credit to Fanny Forecast).

Mantra - I'd like to see her current passive put here, but it's not essential. I wouldn't mind seeing 2 charges with an appropriate CD, if it could mean stronger Mantras. I'd also be in favor of making Mantra 1 rank again and giving her 6 ability points like Jayce, if it meant we could make Karma a more solid champ.

Evenstar1 votes

I think we can all agree W is the main component of her kit that needs to go, this ability does not do well in her kit and I suppose no matter how much the values are bumped up, she won't scale well. I doubt additional damage is what she needs, perhaps she needs utility in place of it. Tether is still a cool thing to see, but if the idea behind a tether is complicated, I'd like to see Karma have it in the form of a AoE buff, much like Maokai's zone, that drains mana.

Inner flame is nice, but reverting back to her old Q will allow better wave clear. The good thing about Q now is that its a great poke, but the way it interacts with minions and champions is what makes it so bad at trading. I'd like to see a better ability on Q for Karma to wave clear efficiently though.

IxtaliKing1 votes

I get what you're saying about her Q, but I'd say it's all down to what we want her to be good at. I don't think they'll be re-reworking her and I doubt there's much from old Karma they'd even consider bringing back. I'm a simple guy though, I just want her to be closer to what she was pre 5.10 when she was actually a mage.

Dominick Destine1 votes

She's getting buffed next patch.

Evenstar2 votes

I've included that in the post above, the W buff is something I'm aware of. But nothing worth stopping our discussion over.

Dominick Destine1 votes

What "Discussion"? she's getting buffed, end of story.

Would that many other champions in need would get buffed over and over like Karma.... Sejuani Taric Warwick KogMaw Akali Azir

Vanjie3 votes

Why don't you stop attacking people for having an interest in a champion they want to play? Grow up and find something better to do with yourself.

Dominick Destine1 votes

Maybe you should step away from the keyboard a bit, calm down and then come back.

None of what you said was coherent whatsoever, it was just emotional dribble that neither refuted what I said nor presented a new argument, etc. Karma is getting buffed, end of story.

Evenstar1 votes

Are you aware of the context for Karma's buff? A small reduction in mana cost in her W was meant to allow her an easier time keeping up with the current league of champions. A buff =/= we should stop talking about a bigger problem, which is the weird spot that she is in.

If you'd like to present an argumentative point, feel free to present your opinions. Is Karma getting buffed a good argument then? Not really. I've included links above, some that are worth reading. Perhaps you can start from the links before you conclude that nothing within the discussion of Karma is logical or concise. If you think discussions about Karma have always been about facts, feel free to dig out any Riot data and prove it to me.

Back to Hiemal's post, I think he's just as entitled as you are to your opinions. You used Sejuani, WW, Akali and Azir as examples of champions who needs to be discussed, shall I say they are fine and have a niche, therefore do not require any discussion?

I don't mind that you're frustrated with seeing another Karma post, but have some common courtesy and display constructive feedbacks/thoughts, otherwise, you are not exactly contributing to the discussion by saying "Karma is getting buffed". There should be no belittling.

I've read about the buff last night before this thread was created, and you're disregarding the fact I'm aware of such changes and expect players to listen to you by belittlement. If my posts, links and references lack points, please allow me to ask how does your "Karma is getting buffed" yield any points itself.

I think Karma is fine but she needs an indicator on her leash like Morgana ult. Giving back the damage on her ult E would be nice too.

The only buff I want riot to give is a small on hit ap ratio for shielded targets next attack. A .2 ratio or something close to that. I think there is room in karma's power budget for that. It will give her E some offensive purposes, synergize well with her passive, give her a slight buff in damage and help her in the support role, mid lane role, jungle role and even top lane. Somehow I have the title of number one Karma on NA. So I think I know what I am talking about... I think. Honestly she is fine right now and giving her this slight buff would just make karma so nice. SO so nice.

Evenstar2 votes

Allowing her shield to apply .2 on hit damage would make her a bit too strong imo, especially on mantra-ed version. It will now double up as an aoe shield, mini initiation and on top of that, a total .8 on hit ratio provided to the team. It's a nice idea, but not sure if its the one Karma needs. I'd like to think that the less utility there is, the easier it is from a designing/balancing perspective to commit to said utility.

One way or the other, the team may have to end up reducing the buff duration on her Mantra-ed E to compensate again.

Basically, it's more offensive power that Karma needs and less utility so that her kit allows proper focusing on making her utilities great and commit to their purpose.

UM I still like this direction to take on karma because it gives her another source of reliant damage but to compensate, I would say riot should remove .2 ap scaling on her W. Her current W ap scaling is really high for a non ultimate ability and I feel like it is slightly overloaded. This will not give Karma more burst but it does give her more consistent damage. I main Karma mid and top so I am kinda biased in wanting to give karma another source of reliant damage. But this still buffs support Karma and jungle karma a whole bunch.

Evenstar1 votes

I agree with you on W's overloaded number, but something that deals .9 AP ratio, it certainly feels underwhelming yet overbuffed at the same time. W lacks impact across all scenarios and has almost zero use or interaction on her kit. But so is R->Q standing at 785+1.5AP, it's overloaded too, which is why all mantra-ed abilities should be revised.

But realize that giving her Karma something different that helps her across all roles is not the intention. Yes, Karma goes where she please, including top and jungle, but if it doesn't solve her issues at her own lanes, it's not exactly something she needs? Why on hit-ratio when that's something no other casters have too? Even with on-hit, does that solve her own issues as a mage/support ie: lacking poor waveclear? And also, why on-hit because Karma is not an AA champion?

Condensing her lanes and roles down is what is absolutely needed right now, instead of outright brainstorming about what Karma needs. I know you know your stuff, since you mentioned that you are the best Karma user NA, but why on-hit when it isn't something that suits Karma, not just gameplay wise but thematically too?

IxtaliKing1 votes

I can see the logic in this direction, it's something I've thought about whilst playing her. Don't you think it might cause some overlap with champs like Janna and Lulu's shield (ally cast)?

REDREX71 votes

The reason for the on hit, is because I gives karma an incentive to auto attack synergizing well with her passive. Not only that is giving more Karma support and Mid more harass and poke in lane., which is the kind of champ Karma is thematically suppose to be. Im confused how Karma's W is the weakest spell on the list. It is a strong spell. A 3.5 second snare on a 6.6 second cd is extremely strong giving a 40% hp missing heal with a .9 ap scaling. W with mantra is a spell with a defensive purpose not an offensive purpose. Its the I need to defend myself and not my team. Its the holy crap im losing this 1v1, cast mantra W and zhonyas and wait for back up as your team comes in 3.5 second. Now it can have an offensive purpose if is used to land your now undodgeable mantra Q. Your now undodgeable 1.5 ap scaling mantra q. It is a short range because it is offering the reward of landing RQ and the risk of putting yourself in a bad position. If it was made longer Karma would be broken.

Evenstar1 votes

As it stands, Karma is a champion who relies less on AA and more on her spell cast to proc her Passive. To say that Karma is thematically a poke champion makes me doubt that you know what you're talking about. Karma was granted a ranged poke to put her in line with the current trend of AP Mids, who all have a form of ranged harass and safety. Not because they intended her to be a poke champion. In fact, her incentive to AA is lower compared to her pre-reworked state. Only in certain occasions you find yourself auto attacking heavily, in the absence of mana or early game where abilities are restricted by cool down. Karma is one those champions that you will not see auto attacking much by late game.

W is the weakest spell on her kit it lacks very impactful moments, and it has nothing to do with it defensive or offensive. Despite boosting .9AP ratio, it is an easy tether to break off due to its range and Karma is often punished for trying to keep the leash going. It is essentially a set up spell, and the offensive/defensive component comes from its identity tied to mantra of being yin/yang. Therefore, it was not designed to be defensive as you said, it's more of a ganking, set up tool.

I agree with you that R-Q was designed to be a risk-reward spell, but the way it functions now is that it is easily dodged, evaded given League of Mobility. The problem with R-Q is that its got too much damage that Karma isn't allowed to have damage elsewhere, that's a bad design. The .9AP Ratio on her W was meant to compensate for her mantra damage removal, and the base snare duration of her W makes it up for it. Right now, no one wants a 3.5 seconds snare when a 3 second root from Morgana is far more efficient and can be aimed from various angles, instead of having a tether that persists for 2 seconds before you get the full effect, while being punished for it.

If you think Karma is strong now because her values are overloaded, then obviously, it is the first thing to hit on her kit so that she may have space for an even distribution of power across her abilities. It's not giving her another reliant source of damage, it's so that her values are not locked in to one huge ability that is easily disregarded, or in another ability that provides low benefit to use at all scenarios. 90%AP Ratio on W is too high when it's meant to be a set up spell, while it lacks the necessary crowd control to be impactful.

And above all, her passive is easily the worst, even by ratings, Karma is at the bottom 20 of champions in League with one of the worst passives. Because of the way it functions, mantra is not allowed to have charges because the rework placed too much emphasis on making Mantra feel like an ultimate, yet not performing like one. Removing the current passive will make way for better passives that will aid Karma, which also means that the 0.2AP on-hit buff is not necessary in the absence of her current passive. If Mantra is treated as a 2-charges ability, there is zero purpose for her current passive to exist, which is exactly the point because everyone thinks a part of Karma could be useful if she had a passive that was not created around CDR.

REDREX71 votes

I think im done responding to this thread. The Fact that you don't think karma is a poke mage, the fact that you don't auto attack, the fact that you think that Karmas abilities are non-impactful is honestly cringe worthy. The fact that you complain that W is a spell that is easy to break free of. on a champion with slows and movement speed boosts. You use your spells in tandem with each other to land them. You don't understand risk and reward. You think a spell is un-impactful because you as a player cannot land the spells. Well no shit, you didn't land your spell correctly of coarse it is unimpactful. Nobody wants a 3.5 second snare? What level of Bronze is this? It is ok if you can not land spells dude. Try playing Annie... or maybe Master Yi. I do not think you have any idea how karma works as a champion.

Evenstar1 votes

Most of my AP Mids are skillshot champions, Karma is a champion I've played since her release and I certainly understand where you're coming from. But you have to look at what Riot gave to her before and after her rework and understand what are the reasoning behind them.

For example, Q - was a ranged skillshot to provide her the safety of ranged harass. W - was replaced with a dot damage due to awkwardness of her old tether E - is a shield that was meant to aid her allies in escaping ganks or getting forward at the expense of tankiness. R - created to create that ultimate feel, but that it didn't live up to its purposes.

I say that you are mistaken because you think Karma was designed as a poke champion, when the actual reason was to give her something that AP Mids have, safety and range. That is different than saying Karma is a poke champion. AA has never been a part of kit, and it only feels that way because her passive is designed around procing the cooldown of her mantra, but it's not an integral part of her, as with any other AP champions who relies on abilities to do damage. Riot calls it an aggressive playstyle, but that's really because its just meant to tie in with the rest of her kit, yet outside of that, it does not bring anything worthy to the table of passives. And on top of that, Mantra ultimately failed to provide meaningful impacts.

Karma has always been known to be a clutch player and that was what shone about her playstyle, not that she was meant to be designed as a poke champion. The rework took that away and replaced it with skills that provided interaction, thus making players feel her abilities made sense. Unfortunately, even then, part of her abilities do not feel thematic at all, such as Gathering Fire or Soulflare.

As the meta changes, so do champions and what Karma is in dire need is a solid identity as a Mage/Support hybrid, instead of a mage who goes to jungle to live with neutral creeps or top to bully melees. I certainly do not think Karma is a poke champion, because that was not the intended purpose of her rework. Her rework did not mean to change her playstyle, but to correct the weaknesses that she had a pre-state. Unfortunately, because the rework has now completely changed her playstyle, it's no longer an acceptable spot for certain number of Karma players.

Her kit has interaction overall, but it is not a good interaction. Her playstyle is binary and predictable, W to snare, E to speed up, followed by RQ for all in. Players at mid have memorized this by now and with skillshot blocking walls or mobility becoming a must have for Mid laners, this causes Karma to suffer greatly. Therefore, it's not a smart design to put in 785+150% worth of AP ratio in one ability is what I'm trying to say. I'm not saying 3.5 seconds is a useless ability per se, but by comparison of other abilities and even in amongst her own mantra-ed ability, it is often overshadowed by other abilities. What makes her RW valuable is the self-heal, not a super mega root. A Zyra with 1.75 seconds of root still provides the same amount of window of opportunity for ganking and it is instant, so what makes Karma's 3.5 second so special because she needs 2 seconds for it to be useful, and that 2 seconds of window means a champion escaping from her tether gets his or her ability refreshed in the right time just to escape away. This is what everyone meant by unimpactful, snare is a commonly found cc everywhere and most AP mids have them instantly, not over time.

I understand your sentiments, but to advise players based on the fact that you are NA's best Karma players is a bit far fetched. Your suggestions are welcomed but I hope you don't force any of it on to players not willing to accept your idea. Being NA's best Karma user doesn't make your suggestions any better than other players who have chipped in and done a lot more homework than you.

Are you aware of the contextual changes for Karma? Have you read enough to understand what was the purpose of her rework or abilities? Or did you pick up Karma years ago during her rework and realized that she's someone you liked after and not before, and therefore you feel threatened that if your champion is going to changed drastically.

TL;DR, you have your points and you understand Karma. But I'd also appreciate it if you looked at the reasons behind why the changes happened, what they were aimed at. Your response suggest to me that Karma had and always will be a poke champion, and therefore seems to me that you are not familiar with her designs. The rework had never stated that she's meant be a poke champion, what it served to do was to take away her weaknesses, and put her on par with other AP mids so that she has something common that most mids have these days. If Karma was a poke champion to begin with, I'll be more convinced but nothing in her books suggested she was a poke champion to begin with. What your post has presented is your strong grasp of knowledge towards her kit, however you lack the contextual understanding of her changes. Throwing a fit because no one acknowledges your opinions solely on the fact that you're NA's best Karma player is not very nice. Instead of getting upset, perhaps players are more convinced if you came from a point where you understand her changes. What you've done so far is to list a very standard amount of DKF points, which is something I guarantee you, that many players have read over and over again.
