I went 5-3 in placements and got placed Bronze 3
My friend, who is terrible at this game, went 2-6 and got Silver 4.
But yeah, MMR is not busted at all.

Your friends MMR may have been better than yours. Being as its Bronze you can easily get out of it by simply abusing heavy CC heavy damage champions like Annie or Malphite.
I got out of Bronze with a combination of with-smite top lane supporter Lulu with Coin and without smite Top lane supporter Lulu with Coin, both of which were done from being in the Jungle position (I am one of the reasons you can't have a jg item and a gold earning item :( ).
