Longsword + 3 pots vs Doran's + 1 pot

You will get way more sustain and damage from the longsword. Dorans seems like waste of money. it doesn't even build into anything.

You aren't accounting for the extra health from doran's, or, more importantly, for the fact that that its extra health and sustain persist until you sell it, unlike the potions which are gone once they're gone.

Buying a doran's is like committing to a dead relationship. She don't wanna build into nothing and you ended up wasting money on that first date.

I think it's like a mail-order bride. You pay for her, get what you can out of her, then sell her back to where she came from. Sure you don't get back what you paid for, but in the end you got out of it what you wanted.

You build Dorans items for kill potential and snowballing, not for upgrades.

what? no you build them for sustain

you build Doran's for the extra health and okish sustain. Go and build your longsword but when the enemy survives with less than 60 hp and you find yourself dead you can comeback and say that Doran's is a waste of money

There is an easy rule to follow for this.

Do I have a sustain support?

Yes? Build Dorans + 1

No? >> Are you going to rush botrk or BT?

Yes? Build Long + 3

No, I am rushing IE into attack speed? Build Dorans maybe even 2.

That's it.

You are either planning on fighting before 7-9 minutes in which case you want the dorans or you are just trying to rush sustain and farm in lane as long as possible, then you want the early vamp so you are harder to dive on tower while you farm up your items.

If you are in low ELO and do alot of poor uncalculated trades, meaning you guys just started shooting each other not over a minion CS or a trade, but just scrapping randomly, then the long + 3 often pays off due to the way the fights happen, where as the person with the dorans will win a shorter duration fight, the person with long sword will win the longer duration fight especially against bad players who will reengage with 1/2hp after the first trade within a few seconds.

Also if you have a hyper aggressive support, and are not in plat or giher long +3 is pretty ok as long as you can use it to pressure out the enemy adc who took dorans and does not have a sustain type support.
