Why do people like "flashy" champions?

This is not a QQ thread. I know that champions like Yasuo and Zed are balanced, and I never usually have major problems with them. I do think that some flashy champions like Riven and Vayne are unbalanced, but this is not a opinion that is shared by every player.

That said, I would like to know why people like to play "flashy" champions so much. I am specifically referring to these champions: Katarina LeeSin Leblanc Riven Yasuo Zed Kalista Vayne

I would list Nidalee too, but since the last nerfs, I have seen very few people playing her. But before the nerfs I used to see Nida on almost every of my battles.

What I mean with "flashy champions"?

  • Champions that have a lot of mobility
  • Champions that either do not have costs to their abilities, or those costs are inconsequential.
  • Champions that can snowball really easily, and many of them have a great early game
  • Because of those three attributes, they tend to have lots of outplay potential.

They are extremely popular, and I would like to know why. They don't even ensure the victory many times, and on my opinion, they are extremely unfun to play against, either because they have an oppressive early game, or because I have to play perfectly otherwise they snowball out of control.

I would not mind if they were just popular at ranked games, where people try their best to win and there would be a reason for them to play those champions. However, even at normal games, I can't have fun because they are so popular, at least on the server where I play. In fact, at normal draft pick games, I ban those champions not because they are OP, but because they are so frustrating and unfun to play against. Everytime I lose against a Velkoz for example, I feel that I've been outplayed and the enemy was better than me. But this is not the same when I play against a "flashy" champion. Unless I am using a flashy champion myself (I rarely play them) then I don't feel that I've been outplayed if I lose. Instead I feel that they took advantage of an obnoxious champion.

I feel the lack of playing against unpopular, immobile and forgotten champions like Zac Yorick Karthus Malzahar Xerath Chogath Sion - I really like playing against them because they aren't flashy, I always have a plan to beat them, and if I lose against them, then I don't have to worry whether the enemy was better than me, or if they just took advantage of mechanics that are really frustrating to play against. Why don't people play them more? They can be as fun, if not more fun than "flashy" champions because they actually present a challenge; because they are immobile, you can't just make risky plays like you would do with a flashy champion. You actually have to think and plan everything that you want to do.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I'm more about the tactical decisions that can come from the likes of Malzahar,Swain or Urgot. Getting in the perfectly timed ult for a complete reversal against a flashy zed is more up my alley. But I guess to some that's not very interesting to spectate. The closest thing Swain has to "flashy" is literally flash W, then R zhonyas. Nowhere near as adrenaline pumping as zed ulting, doing damage, then purposefully shadowing back and let the ult pop them. But I appreciate sheer effectiveness over style.

Plain and simple I find them more fun generally speaking, also did you seriously call Zac and Sion immobile?????

Is there any particular reason to why you find them more fun?

I enjoy having mobility being able to dash around the map, I also like champions with diverse kits because there is more to learn about them.

Because it's not fun to watch/play, is what most likely the answer is going to be.

Immobile mages are so boring to play and to play against they just stay under their tower and clear the wave/poke you. They don't fight in a teamfight, they stand miles away and spam their abilities. Losing to a velkoz, viktor or xerath doesn't feel like you got outplayed, it feels like you got simply spammed to death even if you dodged 2/3 skills. Playing a mobile melee champion however feels exiting, because you actually have to take risks in order to do damage. You have to fight instead of throwing a few skills into the teamfight. Playing against them feels great, because they have to fight you, they can't stay under their tower for the whole game. Look at the fizz vs zed matchup for example. If fizz hits his ult, zed can dodge the fish by using his ult, but then fizz can dodge the zed ult with his e and zed can dodge the fizz e with his w. This is a amazing fight. Both players can win this duell if they are making less mistakes than their opponent.

Why? Real question, and I don't intend this to be sarcastic or anything; why do you feel this way? What makes being outplayed by a mobile champion feel less like you lost to enemy skill than being outplayed by an immobile champion? What is the differentiation between making a skillful play, and taking advantage of a frustrating mechanic. I ask because you made a big point of this, but I can't really understand why exactly you feel this way outside of you disliking those particular mechanics.

I mean, I could say the same thing with different champions. "Xerath didn't beat me by being skillful, he beat me by abusing his stupid range until something eventually hit", or "I don't feel Yorick outplayed me, he just abused his stupid spammy spells." I assume that you wouldn't agree with those statements because you said that you feel those champions are less frustrating to play against, so what makes you agree with those statements less than you would agree with the statements you made?

To answer your question, if I had to say why flashy champions are fun, it's often because having more mobility gives you more options for aggressive play. I get to try to force fights and make things happen on the map. A lot of immobile champions end up having to play more reactively. Take Karthus for example. What is my job on Karthus? Farm lane, keep farming lane, farm farm farm until someone else makes something happen, and then I can respond. There is a lot of room to be skillful, but I don't tend to control the game unless I'm already ahead. I say that as someone who actually really likes Karthus.

Mobility also creates an interesting dynamic where your survival in a fight is reliant on predicting and dodging enemy abilities with your own abilities. It can be fun to have a lot of options to avoid enemy damage, even if you are actually reliant on doing so.

Finally, are we calling Zac immobile now? I always considered the longest non-ultimate initiation to be pretty mobile, but maybe that's just me.
