Introducing your new Gameplay Wardens!

Hey, Gameplay!

You may have seen the application process awhile back for some new volunteers with Riot. Well, many Rioters and volunteers been working hard to get things ready, but we are officially announcing the new Boards Wardens!

#What are Wardens? Wardens are new volunteers for the League of Legends Boards who are here to assist with moderation. We were interviewed as part of a selection process that ran through Riot and some other volunteers (including the Arbiters). Most Wardens are sub-board specific; the Gameplay sub-board is getting 4 Wardens to help manage and moderate the forum.

#Who are the Wardens? We put together some personalized material down below for the Gameplay Wardens, but we’re summoners that volunteered for this position. We are players and boards contributors who have decided to take a more active role on our respective sub-boards. You might recognize us, actually, depending on how closely you pay attention to summoner names on the boards :P

#So… what’s different about the Gameplay sub-board now? Well, the main difference is that you’re going to see the moderators doing stuff. We’ll be in charge of locking posts and deleting posts/comments, but we’ll also keep making our own posts and commenting on yours! This role won’t stop us from being regular participants in the sub-board.

Other than that, the Gameplay Wardens feel really strongly that the Gameplay board should be a fun place to have productive discussions about the game; we’re going to take a more active role in trimming out the unhelpful/toxic threads in Gameplay, as well as promoting the really interesting and helpful ones (new ideas welcome on this especially, it’s a WIP). Our goals are greater transparency in moderation and a more helpful sub-board for newbies and veterans alike.

If we do this right, we think that we can create a better place for the community to have discussions with other summoners and Rioters. Seriously, let’s create a place where Rioters WANT to come talk about the game with us. That sounds nice, doesn’t it?!

#What if I’m skeptical about the whole thing? We’re open to feedback about all of this. If you have ideas about how to improve the board, speak up! We’re here, and we’re listening. We’re committed to this activity, and we’re going to respond to the community and do our best to create the best forum we can. That’s why we signed up! Use this thread to talk to us or start floating ideas for the community. We’ll leave it pinned for awhile, so feel free check back in later with questions and comments, if you’d like.

Without further ado, let’s introduce our new Wardens!

#KempyreanPirate Howdy! I’ve been a summoner and Taric enthusiast since season 2, and I’ve been active on boards since they went live in 2014. I spend most of my time as mid or support. I play mostly ranked, but I enjoy the art and lore of League of Legends almost as much as the game itself.

The constantly changing meta, and the maelstrom of discussion that accompanies it, is a critical part of my League of Legends experience. The Gameplay sub-board should form the core of that discussion, in my opinion. We’re already good, as a community, at churning out creative ideas and valuable insight at a blistering pace, but there’s always room for improvement! I hope our Warden team can make some positive changes to make these boards fun and useful for all of us (including Rioters)! Drop some ideas for us if you have any! Gl hf on the rift, everyone, and I’ll see you around!

#DJ Hatsune Miku How do you do, fellow summoners? You may be familiar with me as a resident wall of texter that answers simple questions with needlessly in-depth posts. I’ve been a support main since season 2 and total fanboy of all things to do with Sona when I’m not moonlighting as a Titan of the Depths. Besides spending hours debating gameplay and builds with anyone who would listen to me ramble I spend a good chunk of time delving into the lore and stories of each of the characters that make the game the rich and exciting experience we know and love!

#Sakuri Ono Hiyas all~! I've been around the game a loooong time so I'll try to just give you the cliffsnotes version. >.>

Originally I was drawn to the game after watching some commented Gameplay footage of the old Dominion mode back in Season 2; which cemented my love of the game from there on out. I've probably dabbled in just about every League outlet there is. I've frequented Dominion, Twisted Treeline, Howling Abyss, Summoner's Rift, and all the Rotating Game Modes. Spent time as a tournament player, a streamer, a content creator, a caster, and a now as a Warden. ^_^

Don't be shy about discussing weird or 'out there' things around me. I adore the non-standard modes most of all and I've always got a soft spot for the Off-Meta; being able to rock a pretty decent AD Soraka and Support Vi if I do say so myself. XD

I'll mostly be sticking to the 'dead times' due to a bizarre sleep pattern so...don't worry. There's always a Warden this board no matter what the hour!

....I'll see myself out now. >.>;

#Laughing Fish 'Nuff said.

I came here with the expectation the Warden Champion Class would get improvements. Misleading title riot.

TL:DR this board is now run by 4 people, a Pirate, an anime character, the physical embodiment of "Rawr XD Nuzzles u" and the President of the United Rift. 3 are support mains, and the last one's account is seemingly nonexistant. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs] Glad to have you all, thank you for making the forums a better place :D

Why are all the wardens weebs?

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

I'm not a weeb.

FearlessCreator3 votes

I am. :)

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

Well, there are a lot of weebs on the Warden team. We're just not all weebs.

Mysticman893 votes

Shouldn't this be stickied or pinned or whatever the term is on this board?

Or am I just posting too fast and it'll be done by the time I finish typing this...

ModKnightsKemplar4 votes

That one. About to pin it :)

Galacius needs to be fired. He locked my post on claims that I was insulting and baiting people when I was doing nothing of the sort. NOTHING. I was defending myself against people who were harassing me and this "warden" locked my post because of it when he HAD NO RIGHT TOO. I called people out on being trolls but that was it.

Unlock my post, now. That was an unfair judgement, and in my opinion, Riot needs to hire wardens who actually know the difference between insulting and defending themselves.

Whenever we delete / lock things, we re-direct users to the Boards Moderation Discord or to Let's Talk: Boards should an issue arise where a user is not satisfied in the way something was handled. This makes communication between Wardens & Users a lot more fluid if there's a problem.

Instead of coming to us and having a discussion about why your thread was locked, you instead opted to post about it publicly, in areas completely unrelated to our moderation in places which we may never see. This is what the Let's Talk: Boards section is for, as it's for feedback on how we as moderators are handling things and it functions as a direct line of communication if it isn't plausible for a boards user to talk to us on the Discord.

I can't tell you whether Galacius' decision was right or wrong, as I wasn't the one responsible for locking your post. However we act in what is the best judgement to keep the boards healthy, and sometimes people will not be happy about our decisions. The only way to get an answer to your question is if you ask us directly, either through the discord or in the Let's Talk: Boards section, and not by going around to different Warden announcement threads and acting in an immature manner and trying to make demands of us.

Lastly, the decisions of the Wardens are final, and we are absolutely in our right to make calls on deleting / locking threads that could emit toxic behavior from it's users. If you're unhappy with this, you are always free to come talk to us via the links I've provided above.

Galaxies was totally wrong in his judgment. And maybe you should put those boards in a better way for people to find them so I wouldn't have to go public.

Just want to say that so far you guys are approaching situations with a professionalism that I yet to attain. Good luck.

And are you still accepting applications?

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

We are not accepting applications right now.

I can't promise anything for the future, but keep an eye out! If this little experiment goes well, we may make additions to the team at some point!

Unreformed Shaco2 votes

How about starting to work with devs to answer players concerns about the direction of their champ, or an explanation for stupid upcoming changes?

Teridax681 votes

As Wardens, we do not communicate directly with the developers, nor do we hold any sway on matters of balance or design. We're just Boards users like you, tasked with curating the Gameplay sub-board and fostering a more positive atmosphere, and as such have zero special privileges when it comes to interacting with Riot's developers. If you take issue with a point of balance or design, I heartily recommend you write a thoughtful thread about it!

LuxannaVeritas1 votes

Hi! Out of curiosity, will we be able to see which posts you respond to, kind of like when a Rioter comments on a post? I think it would be a really nice touch! :)

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

I have wondered that myself, before I was a Warden (I wanted it for Arbiter posts). I will bring it up with someone and see about that functionality. My guess is that it would be difficult to add that at this point, but I can check in about that and see.

Sir Fuzzi1 votes

Is this the place to ask this?

Do you guys deal with necro'd posts (the ones that are like over a year old and still sneak to front page)? Is there a dealing-with policy for necro'd posts on Boards?

I love discussion and contributing when I can, but I also don't know if rehashing old discussions is good; keeping relevant information going through gameplay is probably just good overall.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

I think there isn't a hard policy right now.

If I ever saw one that needed dealing with, I think we could probably lock it; we'd have to take that on a case by case basis, I think. It's a good point to bring up, but as of now, I don't have a generalized answer for you.

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

Necro comments are simply deleted and the thread locked with a message as to why. There is no definitive time which a thread is determined "dead" though.

Edit: Universal Rules updated to reflect a 1 month period before threads are considered "dead".

Wettest Nami NA1 votes

Hey? How long has your Name been blue? What does that mean? Awhile back i saw you (I happen to remember Nami related names) and your name wasnt blue then.

DeathBurst1 votes

Can we get a thread or something to nominate good threads for your "sticky of the day" idea?

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

We're still kinda working on the idea. Sorry for the delayed response; I didn't love how that sticky of the day thing worked out on the first try though. I'd like to think about and try something else, possibly, but we haven't really sat down as 4 and talked about it as of now.

Kai Guy1 votes

Forgive my lapse in manners, I derped and did not congratulate yall yet. So kudos on the blue names yall!

I do not know how much use this would be to community or riot but has any one considered adding an filter for warden approved content? Code in a simple tool for you guys to be able to push posts into a Warden section of sort. Best, Hot, New, Recent and Recommended sort options for example. I bring this up as I have a feeling that not every post yall comment on will be something you want to draw extra attention to and running a red tracker styled feature may be a bit untargeted for focusing on content you feel is valuable.

Anyhow best of luck and have fun mates see ya on the rift n boards.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Thank you for the congratulations!

As to your idea, our ability to add code to the Boards is limited at the moment. Many versions of this idea, and others that would require a similar amount of work, have come up. It's difficult for us to actually do any of that at this time, though.

It's a good idea, and I can tell you that all of the Wardens would love to have a couple more tools than we currently do. It's on our wishlist for the future.

Kai Guy1 votes

Well on the brightside the boards are still listed as "Boards Beta" so hopefully as that moves forward you folks will be considered as they update them. Having the right tools for the job makes life so much easier.

Widows1 votes

I don't know why i smelt some censoring while they described their goals in the sub-forum. Hopefully everyone gets a chance to be attentioned. GL though!

Teridax681 votes

I can see why it would sound that way, but an easy way of telling whether or not what we're doing is censorship is to look at what we're targeting, how we go about it and why we do what we do.

As Wardens, we really are just players from the Boards who applied to the program and took on the job. We personally each have very different opinions on League's design and balance, and haven't changed our attitude when it comes to criticizing it or Riot (you can check my own post history, for example; I'm very critical of many things Riot has done for the game and Boards). As such, our end goal isn't to censor criticism, but to create a space where that criticism can be heard and used as part of productive conversation. I'm personally not happy with how infrequently and irregularly Riot posts on this sub-board, as I think it's also disrespectful to the players who have put a solid effort into offering constructive feedback, but a large part of that problem comes from Gameplay's atmosphere in general currently not being conducive to positive discussion. As such, one of our missions is to make sure Gameplay becomes a healthier environment overall, where players and developers alike can share their opinions without being drowned out by unnecessary drama.

Another of our more basic, yet time-consuming missions, though, is to go through the report queue and address what's there. As of yet, the vast majority of cases where we took action was for threads that belong on another sub-board, and when we've taken action against certain users it's after having given them several warnings for egregiously bad behavior. When we intervene, we've also taken the practice of leaving posts for everyone to see so that players can know what we're doing and give feedback. If you do feel like we did something wrong, absolutely let us know and we will improve how we operate!

hi , is there anyway to create a mega thread where all champions sub-threads are pinned and every champion main can discuss their suggestions/problems or anything there , that way there wont be any "spamming" problems and make everything easier for everyone ? the rengarmains subreddit want to post a megathread discussing the problem with rengar's current state etc , but spamming multiple posts suggesting ways on how to fix him wont really be helpful , this is why i wonder if there is anyway a mega thread for each champion could be created so people can head there and discuss their problems at ease with no spamming issues

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

I think that could be pretty awesome if the execution works as intended. Having said that, I'm having a hard time figuring out how exactly we would make that work in a way where it could stay visible and relevant.

Before I talk to the rest of the team (I sent them a message this morning with a link to this comment, so they'll see it when they next check in to our discord), my initial reaction is that the best thing to do would be to get the text together for a Megathread and post it here. If you guys comment and upvote it, that's probably the best way for it to get high visibility for a long period of time.

We do not want to leave anything pinned for long periods of time for two reasons; first, pinning too many messages means that we control the front page more than the regular users do (that seems kinda not cool). Second, your message can't hit the front page of the Boards if it's pinned on the Gameplay sub-board, which means it's really only visible to people who visit the Gameplay page and actually bother to check the pinned threads. Third, I have a suspicion (based on our last attempt to pin a thread), that people don't upvote something that's pinned. Seems like a lot of people pay attention to that number when they are browsing, but not when they open a thread.

Lengthy response, but feel free to take that back to the subreddit and talk about it a bit. I'd also be happy to drop by the sub-reddit sometime later to discuss it with a group of you (or a few of you could visit our discord and we could chat there). Maybe add me in game and we can try to set something up? I think I'm not the only Gameplay Warden that's interested in working with you on this, but we may not have the best tools at our disposal to pull it off in exactly the way you all originally envisioned. I want to be cautious so we don't hamstring your attempt to get noticed.

subhuman team XD2 votes

right thanks for being clear about it , ill share this on the subreddit and see what everyone thinks , you can always comeby our discord to discuss ways to make this work because thats where all rengarmains gather at least , i wish there was a way i can send you a private message because the boards dont offer that yet , and im euw your na so its kinda hard but either way we can discuss this in the subreddit if you want , /r/rengarmains , cant wait , ill screenshot this and share it with the community

EDIT : i was thinking why not put the champions gameplay megathread in the front page and in the sub-threads there will be a thread specific to every champion to discuss gameplay issues and such things, i know this wont be possible yet but im sure you guys can make it work :)

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

That's actually even better. I can get into y'alls channel and we can try to find a time we can chat with at least a couple of Wardens and a few Rengar mains. You get with your people and I'll get with my people and we'll work on setting that meeting up.

subhuman team XD1 votes

right , is it ok if i link the discord here or is there some other way i can send you an invite ?

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

I was thinking we could do it in game so you didn't have to post it publicly, but I don't have an account on your server... lol. come to our discord and I I'll see you when you get verified, then we'll move the discussion wherever we need to. That's probably easiest.

subhuman team XD1 votes

if thats the case then should i invite those who want to discuss to the server ? i still havent notified everyone on our discord but i'll do it and see who wants to join in

Azeranth1 votes

I think a good way to clean up Gameplay would be forbidding (or discouraging at least) posts which are not discussions. For example, a commentary on some facet of balance shouldn't just be "This sucks" it should be, "This sucks, here's how I think it should be fixed, here's other options, here's why mine is the best out of those" something more akin to a discussion, where people lay out their full ideas to each other and just require more thought. Thinking first usually cuts down on toxicity. Or not just problem solution, but also, stuff like "here's how it is or how I want it to be. Here why it's like that, this is what I understand" and posts oriented towards educating and informing. The board should focus on being a place to collect and exchange information.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

It's a decent thought, but I think it has unintended consequences that we aren't prepared to deal with. People should be free to say if they think a balance choice is terrible, and these Boards are very valuable if we're too strict.

We do want to encourage people to have the sort of discussion that you're talking about, but ultimately, this community belongs to the players. If they want to upvote and encourage threads that just say "this sucks", that's on them. Ultimately, while those threads are not great for players, they can still provide valuable feedback for any Rioters that see them. At least Riot can see that the Boards community agrees with that sentiment on whatever issue it is. That's good.

Our rules are more about organizing content and preventing harassment than anything. We try pretty hard not to censor content in the way you're suggesting; we want anyone who has an account here to be able to speak their mind.

Azeranth1 votes

But that being said it's like trying to publish a coherent thought on 4chan. Sure, you can, and it'll be available there for everyone. But sometimes you have to wade through mountains of circlejerk to get there. It's very easy to complain, and I honestly think it wouldn't discourage complainers, only encourage to put more thought into their opinions and statements. It makes posting feel more impactful and more like your voice matters because it isn't drowned out by mountains of crap. There is nothing more discouraging than making a full blown discourse on Riots recent tweaks to Bruisers only to have no one view it because the top post is "Riven OP pls Nerf rito" and then have "it's stupid, for real" as the body

DarknesTheDragon1 votes

you mentioned starting a discussion well how about this preseason patch that (so far as ive seen) everyone hates and thinks is a terrible idea. maybe not the idea itself but DEFINITELY the way its being carried out. Me for example, i think that not being able to earn ip after a game anymore is terrible. One of the things i really enjoyed was getting out of a victory and seeing that huge pile of ip it makes you feel good. also i've been hoarding skin shards since crafting came out and now you're saying youre going to make them disenchant for less meaning im going to lose some of the ones i want because i have to disenchant them for essence! Also none of the veterans ive seen are happy with your "refund" policy for them (see https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/o1hsbxt5-the-real-reason-veteran-players-are-unhappy-with-the-rune-rework) sorry if this was kinda over the top but i honestly feel like this is a big issue and needs more attention...
