Why don't supports get the treatment jungler itemization went through?

Since League, and as a result Wriggle's Lantern, were released many people abused items that were made very powerful to allow champions to jungle, despite those people not jungling. Riot thought it was due to the item's design, which was AD, Armor, and Lifesteal, but the problem was reciprocated when jungle itemization was reinvented.

To solve this issue. Riot ended up tying jungle itemization to summoner 11. This gave junglers an exclusive set of powerful tools that would not easily get nerfed due to lane abuse. However, some laners took summoner 11 in order to access these tools. Instead of this being considered bad at a first glance, it was considered an interesting trade-off, since you essentially gave up both a summoner spell and an item slot that has the majority of its gold value invested in neutral monsters. This also allowed Riot to gauge the actual power of the items and related actives since it was consistently being used against champions, not just neutral monsters.

Overall, this was a huge step in the right direction as far as jungle itemization goes.

Now we need the same to happen for supports.

Supports originally had no gold income, so they remained weak throughout the game, being forced to buy auras and actives to try to give the other 4 players an edge in teamfights. That was best-case scenario. Unless you were far ahead, most of your gold was dedicated towards wards.

This was later remedied by adding item 2049. It was a 'decent' change in conjunction with a global GP10 increase, as well as GP10 runes, but since laners got the gold increase as well and you gave up almost necessary early game stats in the case of runes, supports were still very far behind in impact. Junglers ended up abusing (I'm using the term loosely here) item 2049 making them look closer to what we all wished supports could be.

To fix this issue, Riot introduced item 3361 and added new support-centered items. These items gave some form of huge utility as well as a diverse system of gold generation that supports would suit best. We all know how item 3092 has been abused as-of-late, and we all know that if supports are ever given really potent options under the current system, everyone outside of supports will be using them.

To fix this, why doesn't Riot make a support-focused summoner spell that functions as item 2049, but has the same system as item 3715 item 3706 item 3711? They already have item 2303 item 2302 item 2301 that they could modify to fit the system. Instead of granting wards, however, they would grant an active that would compliment the utility of supports in place of the summoner spell they're giving up. If needed, you could even slightly reduce the gold gained from minions and give it to a nearby ally in order to further push it solely towards supports.

  1. Supports would no longer be pigeon-holed into spending an item slot, as well as some of their already lackluster income, on an item that really isn't an interesting choice. Its a required 'choice.'

  2. The possibility of adding a number of non-dedicated supports, including non-mages, to the 'support roster', depending on the utilities added by the item actives.

3)Other champions would likely not abuse the items because it requires them to give up both a summoner spell that overlaps with item 3361 and an item slot. As long as summoner 12 summoner 3 summoner 14 remain sufficiently strong, it is very unlikely this system would be abused.

  1. It would allow give Riot levers to balance support classes independent of their main-role counterparts, allowing the support meta to be adjusted and diversified easily.

  2. This also opens up options for early game support-only harass items, letting kill lanes become an interesting choice, though the power would likely have to come from a stacking system of some kind and be very weak if advantages are not gained.

i dunno i never really fall behind when i supp as janna, most of the time i never build sightstone simply due to the fact that she has a big big disengage which is why i usually take talisman of anscension. combined with capt enchanment and her passive gives huge speed boost for my team incase

Sightstone isn't just for laning, its for your team. Anyone above Plat finds it essentially required.

Janna doesn't excuse all of the other supports of having to buy sightstone.

Besides, the problem is that if supports are ever given potent itemization, other roles will use it as well, and often better. This is about having a way to focus power solely towards supports. Not because supports are extremely weak atm, but because support itemization and support champions in general are often the target of balance due to the thin line they tread.

This would give several balance levers that Riot could adjust to give power or take power away from a certain class of supports without affecting other roles in order to diversify the support meta.

im not in plat no tto mention every one gets 2 wards with the warding item 3 if you include pink ward.but since janna can disengage it makes it hard for people to get you but it would be more for rioot to rework certain champs for the supp role yes lux annie are mid laners and janna is not regardless the amount of ap you build her 1 really damaging move which is her w. the reason mid laners take frost queens is for hte 10% cd on it

Alright so I think I can see where you're coming from... but my biggest concern would be the loss of exhaust and in lane dynamics since the support would be trading trade-potential for a second form of warding right off the bat in addition to trinkets... However I would like to throw something out to see if it could work out for what you're trying to say.

Summoner Spell- Ward Consumes a charge to place a Stealth Ward that reveals the surrounding area for 150 seconds. Holds up to 3 charges which recharge upon visiting the shop.

Tier 1 Support GP5 Items: Spellthief / Relic Shield / Ancient Coin : 400gold Can only be purchased if the user has Ward as a Summoner Spell.

Tier 1 Support Secondary Attribute Items: 500gold Can only be purchased if the user has Ward as a Summoner Spell. Perhaps this tier set would need to be a strong selling point? Now that I think about it these would probably need to have the active to make up for the loss of the summoner spell? Item A: Passive movement towards ally champions / captain enchantment? Item B: Passive: Absorb a % of damage that allies would receive Item C: Passive: basic attacks and spells slow enemies (charge based?)

Tier 1 Support Ward Enchantments?: 300gold A: Can hold up to 5 wards now; +mana regen? B: Wards now recharge; +HP Regen or something C: Wards grant stat bonuses to nearby allies? +cdr?

Tier 2 Support Combination Items: (400+500+300) + 1000 ? Gold income passive from selected item is increased to tier 2 status? Attribute Item gets actives from current items? Ward Enchant from selected Item

That way the finished item has gp5 tied to an ally, ward enchantment cost, and some kind of ally benefit all tied into it on the active. Granted, I feel like you would really need something very FAST on these items to make up the loss of exhaust.... so pretty much a selection of almost-summoner-level actives on each item to make up for the loss of exhaust... In reality, I guess the gold that normally goes to sightstone would HAVE to be included on this to keep others from using it while making it accessible to supports.

Would this at allllllll fall into what you'd be looking at doing? It's super vague right now but I thought it was a neat idea.

Who's to say exhaust couldn't be an active on one of these items?

Its not like non-supports would give up an item slot to break even with just taking exhaust in the first place, since trinkets still exist.

The only ones likely to do this are tanks and mages that can afford to take exhaust...which is to say very few. Most tanks need TP. Mages would be the most likely, but can they afford to delay any form of power spike by heading towards a support item instead of raw damage?

Outside of that, the trading power is pretty moot, since both sides would lose it. If anything, its a good direction because it allows some junglers to function better, since they'd actually be able to gank bot lane once in a while.

That's pretty fair. I could see this working out, though the early early levels would probably take a hit because I don't think you could have access to the pseudo summoner and the GP5 all at once. Neat idea overall.

GP5 would have to be on the basic item, similar to the current jungle item trees. Next step up decides active (or in this case pseudo-summoner, similar to the first tier of jungle items modifying smite. Third decides the passive stats you get, similar the the second line of jungle items.

I don't think it would really be a hit, since both sides would lack the active early, and the second would be relatively cheap, like sightstone and the jungle items.

If anything, it would be better because warding would be more reliable early on.

Thinking about it actually... I could just sum up ^ into: Ward summoner spell Tier 1 GP5 item Tier 1 Summoner replacement spell item Tier 1 ward enhancement item Tier 2 combine all into a specific wombo item of your design and up all the parts to tier 2 status.
