@Meddler What do you think of this to make Vlad healthier?

Keep most of his current kit.

Passive: Make each half have as much impact as the other, even if you have to make them mutually exclusive, with the stronger being the utilized one at any given time.

Q: Remove flat heal, move scaling ratio to ult as a passive. Possibly make the return particle give a very small decaying MS buff. Enough to stop his cast-times from inhibiting him so much like now, but not give him real mobility.

W: Size increases with HP

E: Add health ratio to damage, cut AP ratio to a little less than a quarter of current and slightly lower flat damage while allowing ratio to stack with the buff, costs % health instead of flat. Focus should be HP for AoE damage with relatively similar damage output for AP builds. % cost gives E significant costs when building HP. Keep in mind Hp builds will have lower sustain.

R: Ult that synergizes with passive to push his kit further, similar to Jax or Ryze. Current ult prevents him from being strong because it also makes his team stronger. If Vlad keeps his current ult, he will always be weak because if he's strong, his ult will push him to over-bearing. Something like Morphling's ability "morph" would have a great place here. http://wiki.teamliquid.net/dota2/Morphling Basically you'd slowly trade max HP for AP or increased ratios over time, or toggle it to trade AP/ratios for max hp at a ratio similar to passive (once its equalized). Ranks increase rate of exchange and change cap, if one's in place.

These changes remove the 'toxic' parts of his kit while pushing him in two directions: AP=single target focus, HP= AoE focus. It also emphasizes the hp for damage, damage for HP aspect of his passive, adding a lot more interesting possibilities.

It de-emphasizes sustain on AP Vlad, while still allowing it to be a viable and and contributor as a bulky AoE build, who would need it. Short-ranged, reliable damage should be Vlad. He's the juggernaut of mages. At the same time, this pushes his theme further. He is a blood mage, not a vampire. Blood, or health, is his trade. Not vampirism. Sustain should never be his primary focus.

My reasoning for changing his ult is that his current ult makes it so he can never be strong, as a champion. If he's ever strong as a champion with his current ult, his current ult will make him over-bearing, since he'll do high damage with it while also buffing his team by a massive 12%. His ultimate, while interesting and a good strategic tool, unfortunately always makes him over-bearing when he is strong as a champion, not strong because of his ult. Vlad is a carry. He should be picked to be a carry, not to buff his team.

I'd say he will get one or more of:

  • gate on his sustain
  • some abilities replaced by dodge-able ones
  • more interesting passive or his improved healing moved into this place

This would provide a gate on his sustain.

He doesn't need dodge-able abilities. That's never been the issue with Vlad.

Considering what he's supposed to be, adding things that his passive affects would be a better option. His ult is the prime area for this since his current one majorly inhibits the potency of his kit, due to it buffing his team's damage significantly. If Vlad is the reason Vlad is picked, his ult makes him over-bearing. If his ult is the reason he's being picked, Vlad's falling flat on what he should be, or he's OP. Neither of these are good things, and both of these are the reasons he's ever played competitively.

This has always been issue with Vlad, Ryze, Teemo and Kayle, only Vlad had worse issues.

no it isn't. Vlad is a short range mage and he will most likely remain a short range mage. Adding skillshots will only add range to his abilities to make and make them have somewhat higher bases and/or ratios or improved CDs. Vlad doesn't need dodgeable skills if he is to remain a short range mage

So is Ryze and so is Kayle and their nerfs/reworks were in most part about that, if they are any strong and they go top take make laning against them terrible for anything melee because they leave no window of opportunity for opponents. Fully click-to-win oriented ranged champions that can go top are always a problem.

sorry but what? if Vlad of all things is harassing you at early lvls then you are just terrible at the game. His early game is so easily punishable that is actually a bit laughable, i want to know what champions you are using against a Vlad that he can harass you. There are certain champions you do not pick against certain opponents, that has always been the case. Do not come here complaining because counterpicked yourself or because you got counterpicked

...

You really don't get that Vlad's early game was made so weak just because when it was strong it was uncounterable at all, do you?

yeah, it has nothing to do with the fact that he is a late game champion. Why would a late game champion also have a strong early game? start thinking the reasoning without relying on bias. If a late game champion also has a strong early game when are you going to be able to deal with them? Champions need to have some weak phase if they have a sufficiently strong phase

They can easily fix the harass problem by lowering the base damage, increasing the ratios. ADCs have reliable damage. Why can't a short-ranged mage?
