Devourer - An Idle Thought

I had something like this written in another thread, but I thought I'd simplify it.

+25% Base Attack Speed +30% Attack Speed +30 Magic Damage On-Hit +30 Bonus Gold per Large Monster Kill

Passive - Devouring Spirit: Takedowns on enemies increase the on-hit Magic Damage of this item (max 30):

  • +1 for Large Monsters
  • +2 for Champions and Rift Scuttlers
  • +5 for Epic Monsters

Sated Devourer: Upon reaching 30 stacks, the item transforms into Sated Devourer, granting an additional +25% Base Attack Speed.

As an example of how the "Base AS" bonus looks, here's a level 4 Master Yi having just bought the item, not factoring in AS runes or masteries:

Current Devourer: 0.679 x 1.545 = 1.05 AS Modified Devourer: (0.679 x 1.25) x 1.345 = 1.14 AS

And let's say he happens to Sate it at level 9:

Current Devourer: 0.679 x 1.635 = 1.11 AS plus Phantom Hit (1.31 during Highlander) Modified Devourer: (0.679 x 1.5) x 1.435 = 1.46 AS (1.77 during Highlander)

Since all forms of Attack Speed are calculated as Bonus AS based on your champion's Base AS, increasing Base AS has the net effect of granting you more out of any other AS you build/gain per level. The idea being that Sating it should still grant a fairly sizable bonus without all the "wtf how is this balanced" Phantom Hit nonsense.

It has a simple purpose. Give extra damage, grant AS, and let you benefit more from the AS you get otherwise. You know, like Cinderhulk and Runeglaive do with Health and AP respectively.

I like the removing the phantom hit part. xD Attack speed also doesn't seem nearly as broken. You're not getting off 2 botrk passive shots every 2 attacks.... This would be a lovely change.

I will admit that just boosting AS isn't quite as flashy as Phantom Hit's double-swings, but it still does the job of "hit things faster" with the Base AS increase granting more value out of on-hit items like PH does.

The Base AS bonus can also be adjusted if it proves too overbearing with certain AS steroids.

Even at max attack speed of 2.5, you still can't get as many on hit effects as the phantom hit. You'd completely destroy the item even if it is op, it adds build diversity.

Most of the on-hit effects people abuse Sated with are on the champions themselves. Yi's E, Kayle's E, Jax's R, Shyvana's W, etc...

In terms of 'build diversity', it's basically BotRK. Nashor's if you're playing Kayle, but otherwise just BotRK. ~15% Current HP in physical damage every other hit is stupid no matter how you slice it, not even getting into the corner case that is Sated Vayne.

Speaking of Jax, I wonder how high this modified Sated would put his AS at level 18 with his passive....

(0.638 x 1.5) x 2.72 = ~2.6

Perhaps the number needs to be adjusted...
