Mastery Tokens Blue Essence and Shard Requirements?
So to prove that I'm good at this champion I need to open enough chests to get that champion's shard, or use 500 Blue Essence?

Pretty much. I think of Level 6 and 7 as aesthetic bonuses though, like icons, so they probably should be paid for. I mean, I think that the fact that Riot even gave us these options to further our champ mastery is already great in itself.
Not really. The biggest issue I have with Champion Mastery is that is rewards Quantity over Quality. It took me no more than a day or so of casual play to get Rank 7 on Sejuani and I'm just an average Sejuani player.
I shouldn't have the same mastery as this guy.

This guy should have a nice big indicator next to his Mastery Level indicating that he's earned/proved his Mastery at a higher level of play than me.
When you say you got to Rank 7 'in a day or so', I'm assuming you meant from Rank 5. That means 2 S-'s then 3 S's or better. Considering what the grading system means, it should be fairly obvious that it's much better than average gameplay. Idk if you are looking for an ego massage or are just a bit dense, but continuing on...
Reaching Rank 5 was the 'quantity' part. Getting to Rank 7 is the 'quality' part as it requires several very good grades. It seems like a good system to me. As for differentiating yourself from exceptional players, it could be done by showing the mastery number in-game, but that is over the top. It is pretty unnecessary to flash your exact amount of mastery in-game. Think about it.
It took me less time because I'm a pretty good sej. But ultimately, if you keep spamming a champion, you're eventually gonna get matched against a bunch of shitters and get a free S.
I know some pretty fucking terrible Bronze and Silver players who have the same mastery rank as Diamonds and Challengers. A Bronze Yasuo with like 500k mastery is still gonna be a lot worst than a Diamond Yasuo with 50k. If anything, it says to me that they've played 500k mastery worth of games and are still to shit with that champion to actually climb.
If Riot wan't a Mastery System that is actually indicative of Champion Mastery, there needs to be one more final mastery that you need to reacquire every time you reach a new Ranker Tier (not division). It would be as simple as getting several S/S+'s in that Tier.
Riot is aiming for Mastery to be something that is achievable for regular players who put a lot of effort into specific champions, and to give them satisfaction if they work hard enough. By making higher levels of Mastery unachievable for average elo players, the entire Mastery system just becomes another add-on for high elos rather than something nice for the vast majority of League players. People already see fancy high-tier borders in the loading screen, they don't need to see uber-masteries in-game that they won't be able to achieve.
Well then they need to change the name of the system because if you actually 'Mastered' a Champion, you certainly wouldn't be stuck in low elo.
Besides, it would be nice to be able to differentiate between the MR7 champions I actually play in Ranked, and the ones that I don't when I'm playing normal games and getting obnoxious players who expect me to be a god at every champion I play just because I'm higher elo than them.
To addicts who repeatedly play the same champion, maybe reaching the required games and grades to get max rank isn't difficult. But to the mainstream of players, getting there is an achievement that needs a lot of time, effort and 'mastery'. Although people like you might want to raise the skillcap because they're not 'challenged enough', Riot actually keeps the majority of it's player base in mind with this system.
It's obvious that we will not change our standpoints on this so there is no longer a point to this conversation.
everyone knows they just shoehorned blue essence into there because they didnt know how else to put a sink for the stuff into the game.
yes, its stupid.
if they really wanted to do something useful with it, they would allow us to buy keys with blue essence so we can sort of recycle it to open more mastery boxes and reduce the grind for fragments a little bit.
Before you go on a glorious witch hunt, this is NOT the case. What you presented is one of the options. About 3 or 4 patches ago, right after Mastery 6 and 7 launched, Riot released a store purchase for 1700 IP or 230ish RP that granted you a random champion shard for Hextech. You could use this to break into Blue essence, or thank your lucky stars if you got the one you actually wanted.
