why are turrets not targeting properly?

Critmaster Garen··106 votes·6,118 views

i just witnessed a full on dive on bot lane by a pantheon, trundle and lucian. neither one of them has an ability that resets turret aggro, yet the turret just kept shooting minions throughout the entire fight.

this isnt the first time ive noticed something like that. it happens all the time that turrets dont target champions like they should and keep attacking minions.

the AI of towers is actually pretty dumb.

Case in Point: I've learned that if I play Heimer, I can freely tower dive with my team basically for free 100% of the time. The Tower AI is for SOME reason coded so it will automatically target Heimers normal or Ult turrets over minions first and foremost. That part is fine for the most part, I get why, but the problem is, the AI of the tower is also coded to never CHANGE targets from that turret until it is dead.

Multiple times I will walk up to a tower with a friend, drop my ult turret, Tower targets it. Walk in and kill whoever is under that tower and the tower will never change targets because it is coded to go ham on Heimer turrets 100% (I'm actually not certain it won't target the turret over a champion even if a champ is being already targeted but I've yet to bother testing it).

I was showing this to my friend the other day and it just blew his mind, because from then on we could tower dive for free as long as I had ult turret up (just because it has a bit more health is all). The tower AI pretty badly needs to be fixed on a lot of levels because it makes some silly situations and interactions otherwise.

The AI is set that it will only attack one target and keep attacking it until it is dead or out of range. Also goes for the first enemy to enter turret if no minions are there.

Say Rammus Draven and Malzahar are against Blitzcrank and Rammus gets hooked into the tower radius. While this seems effective it is actually not if Rammus is built enough because now Draven and Malzahar can go HAM on Blitzcrank and all Rammus has to do is sit there, maybe press w and probably has more than 30% after leaving the tower range if all took place at full health. While this seems nicely strategic, I kind of don't like the fact that something like this is relatively easy to do.

I am the only one who would like turrets to always target the champion with the least HP?

Unfortunately, no, but that doesn't make you right.

An attacking champion takes priority over minions. If this wasn't the case there would literally be little to no point to the towers at all. They are already barely useful as is.

Zero Skill Tank1 votes

Staying BEHIND minions has nothing do with turret aggro as far as I can tell what matters is if you and minions are in range.

ahferroin72 votes

It doesn't matter if you're behind the minion wave or not. If you attack an enemy champ who is under tower while you are also under the same tower, the turret will go after you (usually, there have been issues in the past, and it looks like there's a bug since around 5.20 also). The trick is to either:

  1. Make your first attack a knock back that forces them out of tower range, and then go after them.
  2. Sit right at the edge of tower range, attack once, leave turret range, go back in to attack again, repeat.

It may be interesting to some people here however, that if you are under an enemy tower and damage somebody who is under a different enemy tower (Ziggs ult, Xerath ult, Caitlyn ult, any global ult, any number of champs with traps, etc), it will not cause the turret you are under to attack you.

PL554 votes

Thank you someone else noticed this. When I say this, it gets downvoted and people say I'm just looking for excuses. It also sometimes feels that the turret waits like 2 seconds to target someone diving you with no minions. Turrets are already weak as they are, this just makes outplaying people at low health harder than it already is.

recently had a game where the tower legit did not stop attacking me (I walked back to my own turret and it still was firing at me until I died)

Idk what it is, but towers targeting seems to be really off right now.

the turret would have to target the Pantheon in the first place for him to block shots. it kept attacking minions.

if there is no enemy champion around, ist not uncommon (or at least was) for soraka to heal the cannon minion to get some extra time pushing.

FistOfSharkiesha2 votes

Minions randomly freeze for seconds at a time and Heimerdinger's turrets are completely ruined as well. Started a few patches ago. Heimer's turrets will randomly switch targets without Heim even marking anything with an auto attack, and will often ignore the targets Heim does mark, even if they're within range. Lost so much CS and trades because of this as Heimer, and I've died when I should have been able to get a kill with enemies diving me under turret as any champion.

the one getting dived was probably outside of turret range, if let's say pantheon was inside the turret range, but the one getting dove moved out of turret range, the turret won't aggro, even tho pantheon is standing on top of the turret

they were both clearly sitting inside turret range.

the thresh who was getting dived sat right next to the turret. the turret still kept attacking minions.

ive died to this myself in the past. baiting my opponent into a dive, fully expecting the turret to help me turn the dive around on him. and the turret didnt switch target like it should and kept attacking minions all the way through.

its not very common, but it keeps happening.

I doubt it. It was more likely juggling of turret aggro as each of the attacking champs backed just out of range when aggro was acquired. The first response you see in this thread is in fact the most likely explanation aside from aggro juggling.

Xonra5 votes

You can doubt, but I can attest to having this happen myself. It really isn't something that happens often I will fully agree, but it DOES happen. It has nothing to do with aggro juggling, but the AI seems to get focused or stuck on targets (I don't know how it is coded specifically so I can only guess/assume), but it does happen.

Look at my post about the derpy interaction with Heimer turrets for an example of how silly the tower AI interaction and aggro system really is.

It is rather common I'd say.

It really sucks, and it doesn't seem to switch targets accurately. I've had 3 people dive someone and the turret randomly changed aggro from one person to the other, and that guy lived because he got one less turret hit.

not too long ago i was standing between both my outer and inner turret because i knew i was getting 2 v 1 tower dove

both turrets did not attempt to hit either of them

1374341 votes

Well if there are minions by outer turret as they walk by the turret won't attack them assuming they haven't touched you yet, and they can easily kill you between the turrets while outside their range. Depending on the situation (which you didn't really explain all that) it is very easy to kill someone between two turrets without ever getting a tower shot, especially if you have low hp.

KirbyCake2 votes

i was full hp and was being attacked for a whole 5 seconds while turrets literally didn't try to attack either of them

turrets are a complete joke

Yea, just about every game since 3 patches ago, i see turrets not attacking champions when they should be. Rito dont give no fucks tho. Besides, tower damage is irrelevant, theyre soooooo weak

Roktan1 votes

I've made a few comments about the turrets problem not being so much that they go down easily, but that their targeting AI has sucked for a long, long time. Everyone seems to ignore that and continue to bitch about their health/armor instead.

nami tf1 votes

I once came across a suggestion for turrents serving different roles to have different levels of strength and health, an idea I really like. For example, the laser turrents (guarding the nexus at the inhibitors) are a joke, so it was suggested that the former should be able to target five things at once, as well as giving both more armour and magic resist (like, 80 armour and 60 MR would be better), while maybe toning down its damage rate to make it bearable (they do, what, 150 dmg per second?). As for the inner and outer zap turrents, they should prioritize its targets in order of highest attack damage that would effect them, thus using abilities on them would trigger their aggro. Zap turrents should also do splash damage and DoT.

I don't know how much stronger these changes'll make the turrents, but I hope it's not too strong.

funny guy11 votes

did he have ohm wrecker. tht makes the turret not attack. i also lost a game today because of a base race where i killed one tower and the other nexus turret focused me when minions where right next to me.

Thuban1 votes

They don't do damage anyway, so why worry about it. Not enough voices on the forums for Riot to even acknowledge the problem. Turrets have been useless for years now. They are only there for that imaginary obstacle so you can't HAM the nexus.

EDIT: you just now notice this? Last time I remember turrets actually doing something was pre-season/season one.

RyzeRework1 votes

First pantheon passive can make it so u can block 3 turret shots in a row 2nd if your behind a turret or out of turret range when somone starts attacking you the turret won't aggro

Gaddafi1 votes

Ye it happens, rare but when it does it makes you dead :D Or when you have certain double kill with Q as Malza and... It do no damage, no silence as if you missed :( Rare but sucks.

this is a thing? I've played 3k games this has never happened once... I should know I flash Tibbers all the time under towers

Traptintime1 votes

I haven't bothered to read through all the comments but it appears a lot of people are noticing the same thing that I am. The towers aren't aggroing right. I have both died being dove and survived when diving because the tower never switched aggro appropriately. I thought it was just me at first but I have noticed similar events a few times in streams and youtube. I wish i saved the video.

ahferroin71 votes

I've been noticing issues myself with targeting for non-champion damage sources (except the summoning platform turret, that thing never seems to break). Turrets randomly retargeting when they shouldn't, continuing to fire on targets beyond their range, not retargeting when they should. And it's not just regular turrets either, I've noticed this with Heimerdinger's turrets, and on rare occasion with Shaco's boxes too. I haven't played a whole lot recently, so I can't say with what frequency it's happening, or even when it started, but I'm becoming more and more certain that there's something up.

That said, it is fully possible for a good Pantheon to turret dive , stay under tower for almost 10 seconds, and come ot completely unscathed, and I know for a fact that Lucian has enough range to hit somebody standing next to the turret from just inside it's range, which with good timing means he can constantly harass someone under turret with no return fire from the tower, without using any abilities.

P0IS0N IVY1 votes

There's bugs with pretty much every single auto target mechanism in the game. Zyra's plants automatically retarget after hitting an enemy champion once even if they are still within plant range. It's like watching hamsters with ADD.

Has, any one ready any of the Turret descriptions, it says on them that you can't dodge turrets but fizz, kalista's special and others allow people to dodge turrets. Turrets aren't safe anymore/becoming useless. The old garrison spell that we had years back allowed 8-10 secs of tower invincibilty with increased damage and speed. Now if they can modify it to include auto targeting enemy champs(priority) with double range for that duration, it could bring back there importance. Also with the garrison I'd like to see it shoot 2 or more shots at the same time during the spell.
