Ping based matchmaking
If your game is so big then obviously you have enough players to start a 80-120 ping only match or 0-50 ping only match. It should only take double the time but it will balance the game even more.

just give me a second, while i download something big, go into que, and then turn the downloads off when i get into the game...
I've thought about this some time ago, but not about separating players. Higher ping means nothing more than "slower reflexes" unless we think about ping-spikes, which is hardly possible to take into any sort of calculation.
But the ping is something outside players' skills, even if its impact is not too big, so it can possibly be considered when, for example, giving off the end-season ranked rewards (if they're based on players' skills, not actual in-game performance/ranks). I don't think it's really worth the extra efforts to keep track of each player's in-game ping, though.
