Whats even the use of keeping certain summoner spells locked?

DrProfVibeCheck··35 votes·1,306 views

Why are Smite and Ignite unlocked at ten? Why isn't flash immediately available at the beginning of the game? Why are sums lcoked per pevel ANYWAY?

Its not like its abusable. Whats the matter with showing new players what can be at your disposal?

Low levels can't even jungle if they are interested in it.

both Warwick and Nunu can, and are both 450 ip champs. The thing is though, doing duo top/mid is way more effective because their clear speeds are absolute garbage without runes/masteries.

So you're kinda forced to learn what they all do.

DrProfVibeCheck3 votes

Then put a tutorial of it in the game, don't restrict it.

No one does tutorials.

Edit: And to piss off people who wanna smurf.

DrProfVibeCheck3 votes

No one does them because they aren't there.

One of the main reasons things are gated at low levels is to address the matter of depth vs complexity. The more choices you have, the more complexity there is for players to overcome, the more likely it is that they will feel overwhelmed.

How many people thought Smite worked against champions early on? I know I did. If I encountered that in my first couple games then that would have felt very demotivating. Players are given a small number of spells to familiarize themselves with, and occasionally a new spell would be added for more choices and thus more complexity, but incrementally. Some of the simplest ones are given early like Heal and Ghost, so you can familiarize yourself with the simpler aspects of the game. Flash and Smite are two examples of Summoner Spells that can entirely change the way a champion will play, so that difference is locked behind the premise that people have an understanding of how the game works in the first place.

What it sounds like you want though is for the premiere spells be available early on. As I mentioned above, entire playstyles can be locked behind summoner spells, and those are the ones that take the longest to get. Spells like Ghost and Cleanse don't really change the way people play too much, so if those ones were locked behind a high level wall then people would be able to play however they wanted immediately, but the summoner spells that are more used for fine tuning would be available later.

The thing is that both of these are valid schools of thought. One of the main benefits to the first one is that people will only have a small number of play decisions to concern themselves with, and by the time you go to use Smite yourself there's a chance you've seen other people use Smite, you've seen some of its limitations, and the new items that come with it are more likely to make sense (namely how the passive only effects monsters). The second one allows people to try mostly whatever they want and creates a more free play experience. Even if no spells were level locked, you'd have all the benefits of the latter idea but all of the burdensome complexity that would come with being new players.

All this "complexity is a wall to new players" can honestly be avoided by giving better tutorials of the game.

But i understand where you are coming from. I was overwhelmed by the prospect of Masteries when I joined the game.

This goes back to my point, though. I was overwhelmed by Masteries because no one told me what they were. I was just sitting there, at level 5, not knowing what the heck to put my points in.

I believe that to make the new player experience better, Riot must make easily accessible tutorials, or at least, point you in the direction of some. I learned many of my mechanics by watching YouTube. This way, people don't head into League like cattle to a butchershop.

I would argue against that. Have you ever had a game that just puked out 30 minutes of tutorial non-stop? It's not very interesting. At some point you just wanna try everything that was taught in a real match. The current system allows players to play while still learning new aspects of the game as they go on.

Just admit it. You only care about this because you want to continuously stomp noobs. It doesn't take very long to get from level 1 to 10.

There are ways to do tutorials badly, and there are ways to do tutorials well. It does not stop the fact that they help new players understand the game. That is something new players need, because, right now, the current tutorial just tells them how to move.

League is a complex game, it will need complex tutorials. I would rather have several tutorial vids available to me rather than me feeding many games until I find out what works and what doesn't.

Also, as a side note, having good, indepth tutorials at least available without digging far would be nice. They would not be mandatory, but its something thats there for new players to reference while they play the game.

Last thing, you assume I ask this because i want to "continuously stomp noobs". Let me clear things up: I despise smurfs. They ruin the new player experience, something I despise even more. If they actually have a valid reason for smurfing (i.e. wanting to level with a low level players, wanting to see what would happen if they mained urgot from level 3, etc), then good on them. As long as those smurfs end their games like they would any other, swiftly and without BM. But for the type that wants to stomp noobs however, they thrive on the fact that the new player community is uneducated on the mechanics of League. They smurf for the sole reason of exploiting the unskilledness of players. If thats not a good reason for educating new people, I don't know what is.

Its to force new players to take time to expeirnce the other spells, to try them and see what they do instead of lock in:

summoner 4 summoner 14 and summoner 3 summoner 7 sometimes depending, and never look back.

Thats it in theory, in practice its to iritate smurfs by delaying the best tools, just like grinding to be eligble for ranked gates smurfs from making 10 accounts.

Then there is the last reason.

Its supposed to be a bit of a grind to get to level 30, so its an actual punishment for people who get banned. That way they cant just pop on another account and instantly have all the tools, access, and purchased runes/champs available to them on another account. They, like smurfs, have to grind for that stuff and it helps to cut down a smidgen on alt accounts.

If youre going have an LoL account, then youre in it for the long haul, youll get that stuff eventually. If you just want fast access for your smurf account, go fuck yourself in the ear with a power drill. Youre pretty much 70% asshats.

I don't think it makes sense to sell less effective runes either. MOBA progression should be game to game only, not summoner level to summoner level.

While I understand the words, I don't understand what you mean. If you get the option, can you explain the concept of game to game progression for me?

To make you keep playing to level it up that's about it.

Nekusen1 votes

Easy, so players will learn to use all of the spells instead while they learn the game.

NegusInParis1 votes

They will use flash + ignite anyway so I don't see the need for it.

DrProfVibeCheck1 votes

Honestly, If i were new, I'd do stuff like ignite exhaust and ignite teleport.

There are parts of this system that suck but overall it helps keep smurf's down.
