Okay, now I know why mid laners hate Yasuo

Ironclad Dragon··74 votes·7,808 views
  • Try to cast abilities to damage him? He'll dash out of the way so long as there are any of your minions nearby.
  • Basic attack him since he's so bouncy and basics can't miss? Has a shield for that, since you're a mage, your basic attack damage is negligible and won't destroy it, let alone scratch his health.
  • Where does he get this shield? Simply from moving.
  • Hit him with an ability when his Flow is down? He'll cast Wind Wall, blocking it.
  • Hit him with a basic attack when his Flow is down? Wind Wall blocks your negligible yet only reliable source of damage too.
  • Hit him when the Wind Wall's on cooldown? He'll dash out of the way. Shield will be back too.
  • Build armor against him since you're afraid of fighting and dying to him? Come Level 6, his ultimate will allow him to ignore exactly half of the armor you got to protect yourself.

You know what the problem is, I think? There's no end to it. There's no entry point to break this cycle; everything of his kit feeds into itself. He is never without a tool for the job, unlike most champions. Jump onto a mage like Xerath, and he won't have much to do other than throw out a stun that he might miss. Yasuo though? His Flow Chart (pun intended) is pretty self-sufficient. Add that atop of having double critical hit chance, and yeah, you got a nasty champion.

The comments below are slightly ignorant as a good yasuo player will give you hell. I do find him a nuisance to play around but he does have counter play. What I like to do is trigger his shield with an auto-attack and wait for that to die out and then burn my skills on him. Fearing windwall? Well you have to bait it honestly. You either use your most mana efficient spell to bait it, or you play something with mobility. For example when I play Ahri, what I like to do is dash once and a bad Yasuo will always throw the wall up right away, dash right through it and complete the full burst combo.

Xerath is actually one of the people that I pick when I face a Yasuo.

Zhonya rush from the get-go, stay under tower and farm with your long ranged poke.

Q him when flow is down, W when flow is up.

If he dashes through minions at you, EWQ him and back off. If he hits you with his tornado and ults you, spam the Zhonya key and let him stay there wondering why he isn't hitting you, then EWQ him once you pop up.

If you need to flash away, go ahead.

I can't Q him if he dashes or walls, it's always one of those things.

Does his wall stop the Q? I know there's projectiles that can't be stopped by it. With that being said, your W shots still do a fair amount of damage and at a nice range.

Trash ADC Btw2 votes

His wall stops e, basic attacks, even tower shots.

Edit: Oops, I think I got his E mixed up with his Q. My bad. Edited.

Narasimha11 votes

It does not. Don't bloody lie. It doesn't stop his Q, his W, his R, or tower shots.

Trash ADC Btw1 votes

I got them mixed up. My bad. Actually, a Yasuo in a game with me used his Wall to block tower shots during a dive. It actually worked, blocking two complete tower shots.

HighH14 votes

Stop the bullshit Yas wall doesn't block tower shots I've been dived many times by a Yasuo and the tower doesnt give a fuck about his wall or trigger his shield.Unless there's a bug where it does block tower shots in which case hope it doesnt happen

I thought it was a beam, it goes through windwall.

lightdragoon885 votes

The only thing his Wall can block from Xerath his the E.

QWR ignores his wall. Xerath is one of the best mages to use against Yasuo.

Malicious Fury2 votes

One of... correct. Vlad would be the best. His Q's completely ignore his wall. :D

lightdragoon882 votes

Never thought of Vlad. I mostly use Malzahar.

All of Malz moves bybass his wall and the E and W can hit the guy even when he is moving around and Malz little pet can always pop that shield.

Mordekaiser absolutely slam dunk Yasuo. At least with Vlad he has problem if Yasuo dash up to his face, Mordekaiser just hue all over him

that is a good point. would zhonya's be a must for any mage facing him and just use it when he ults?

I can't say that every mage needs it, but it is specifically meant for battling assassins or quick burst.

In the case of Yasuo, it helps a lot since Yasuo really likes to get in close. If he jumps you under tower, even if it's with his Ult, hitting the Zhonya's active or stunning and hitting the active can really put a stupid look on his face.

BuzzinTate3 votes

try ziggs, his wind wall is every 30 seconds or so tier 1. Your auto has increased damage to get past his shield with ease and your Q's are on a low cooldown and do decent damage.

he rushes you? you have a skill that lets you knock him back and/or let you jump to safety.

DrCyanide4 votes

That, or pick a champion that can fight through the wind wall.

Viktor - The Q cast gets blocked by wind wall, but the empowered auto attack that follows isn't. Add a Lich Bane to maximize the unstoppable, undodgeable damage.

Ironclad Dragon2 votes

Viktor's empowered auto attack isn't blocked by the Wind Wall? Odd but cool. Will have to try that sometime.

BottleCapster3 votes

The empowered auto is instant, no travel-time so it isn't considered a projectile.

BottleCapster2 votes

Also if he throws the wall out you can actually Death ray him by starting your laser past the wall's location.

The more you know~Viktor

How do you beat an infamous mid laner whom is fabled to never be able to be beaten 1v1 by his lane opponent?

With another infamous mid laner whom is fabled to never be able to be beaten 1v1 by his lane opponent.

Malzahar

His windwall means nothing because none of your abilities are missiles. When his flow is up, just pop a W under him and wait for it to die off. Since it has such a large range and quick placement, you can almost certainly hit him with 1 proc of damage to activate the flow proc. E and back off in order to deal seriously brutal damage to him. When he gets in close, show him why you're feared by WEQRing him and watching him melt. Building a item 3157 as your first item should show him what's what.

Ironclad Dragon6 votes

I wish I had him. He would be good against Yasuo.

The problem with Yasou's, and many other camps commonly seen as "OP", is that their kit is _ too_ well designed. Their kits fit together like a puzzle with certain skills covering the weakness and empowering their other skills. When you combine this the fact that most of these "OP" champions kit's revolve around mechanics such as dashes and supposed "outplay potential" (for said champion, not against) makes them "over loaded", and "lack counter play", ect.

A good example of a champion that has a good kit that flows well is Tristana's kit. W serves as an escape as well as an engage tool, and since it is on a decent CD it can't be used to engage, poke a little and then disengage. The only exception is if you get a kill, which resets the CD. This works well with the passive on her E which forces her to push the lane, since it allows her to have an escape if some one decides to gank to punish her early pushing. The active on her E is a nice point and click poke that has a lot of counter play when used on a champ. Since it's on a timer after it is cast it leaves room for either a heal or shield to be used. When you champs like Jana, Sivir, and Morgana in the bot lane it allows for quite a few valid picks against that can neutralize or even benefit from Tristana's only form of poke in the laning phase. When you use her E on a tower, it's CD is reduced every time you hit it with your Q active. Likewise, every time you hit a tower with your E on it while your Q on CD, your Q's CD is reduced. Her kit allows her to be one of if not the best demolitionist in the game, while providing her safety with her jump on W and her knock back on R. But she still has weakness in that she lacks the hyper carry potential champs like Vayne and Jinx have with kits built around killing people, she doesn't have globals like Jinx or Ashe, and she doesn't provide utility to her team Ashe and Sivir do.

You can break his 510 shield with a simple auto-attack. Windwall has a crazy high cooldown, just bait it. Without a knocked-up enemy he has no ult, his only knockup ability is his Q, which needs to be set up for it to knock anyone up, you can predict this stuff. He can only use his gap closer on enemy units, which means it is both predictable and you control when he can use it.

Lord knows he can be ungodly frustrating to play against, but he is not without weaknesses, learn them, use them and kill the slippery bastard. XD

Ironclad Dragon3 votes

His knock-up ain't bad at all. The only times I really have problems with it from the fog of war.

Valderis Vandala2 votes

Never said his knock up is bad, I said it is predictable, he needs to stack it before he can use it.

I was agreeing with you.

Darius

You know what weakness they both share?

#GANKS

Seriously, neither of them have a way to escape even the most poorly executed of ganks. It's a team game, so what if you can't deal with them 1v1? It doesn't matter in the end.

Stellafreyja4 votes

I don't mind Braum blocking projectiles because he at least takes reduced damage from them, so it's not a total loss. If Yasuo's Windwall had a durability meter, that would be great. Like after a certain amount of damage it would break/disappear.

Also, the fact that his passive is literally 3 in 1 is also kind of bullshit. And, who ever thought infinite dashes was a good idea should be fired. 0.1 second cooldown at max rank on minions?

Honestly, his abilities should use some Flow, that way he has to balance if he wants his shield and crit chance.

AlphaKappaPika4 votes

gotta help people out with this

Hi, Plat 3 Yasuo main here, let me see if I can help.

There are a few tips that people already know about facing a Yasuo; poke his shield off with autos, he's weakest right after his tornado is gone, and he's weak to ganks. I'd like to go into more detail.

The key to beating a Yasuo in lane is proper minion management, and proper management is different depending on whether you're a ranged or melee champion. As a ranged champion, you want to keep the wave in 1 of 2 places depending on Yasuo's health relative to yours. If Yasuo is ahead or even, you want to keep the wave frozen a bit outside of your own tower, so that he has to go into tower range to order to hit you. You can basically do whatever you want to him if the wave is in this spot because you can simply retreat into tower range if he tries to go onto you. However, if you're ahead of him in health, you want to start a slow push, so you can poke him whenever he tries to CS and you'll have a buffer of minion support if he tries to all in you. In this case, he can't do much either.

For a melee champion, you want to slow push pretty much all the time. Yasuo is extremely vulnerable to being all inned by melee champions when he's trying to CS, and a good Yasuo will try to do a slow push of his own to discourage his opponent from attacking him. One important thing to understand is that while enemy minions are oftentimes Yasuo's best friends since he uses them to dash, they are also one of his biggest weaknesses since he's required to tank them in order to trade. If you can bait him into tanking alot of minions with some kind of defensive ability like an ori shield, you can very easily come out ahead in trades, provided you don't panic, keep autoing, and hit some extra free damage on him when he tries to get out.

Generally speaking, a Yasuo will always want the wave in 1 of 2 places. He either wants a slight minion advantage on his side so he can get free opportunities to poke with Q, but not so many more minions that the wave gets frozen outside the enemy tower. A good Yasuo will bait you into hitting minions with AOE abilities to push the wave back towards him if it starts to get too close to tower, allowing him to be aggressive again. The other position is for when Yasuo has a lead on his opponent; he will want to freeze outside of his tower, leaving a long trail of minions to dash through so he can all in you if you try to walk up to CS. The key to beating Yasuo is to keep the wave where you want it to be rather than the way he wants it to be, or there's not a whole lot you can do as alot of champions.

Other general tips for beating Yasuo include: Ask for ganks, an aggressive Yasuo player is very easy to bait and kill if he isn't strong enough to 1v2 already. Take exhaust as a combat summoner if your kill pressure on him is low, its a great way to neutralize his aggression in lane as well as neuter him in teamfights. If Yasuo misses his tornado, that is the time to be aggressive. His Q is on CD, he has no CC for a while, and his ult, by extension, is unavailable. And if Yasuo gets too aggressive in lane and messes up when trying to trade, all in him right then and there. If you get a lead against Yasuo, most champions will be able to zone him out heavily since he's a squishy melee only champion with no escape and no natural sustain.

And 1 final tip that almost no one knows about. Yasuo's ult is a suspension and not a knockup, which means it can be removed with QSS, Mikaels, Cleanse, Gangplanks orange, and Olaf's and Alistars ult. If you remove it, you can move immediately and will take no damage, but Yasuo will still be stuck in his ult animation until it is finished. - credit goes to slamurai jack (senpai notice me)

Gangtank 3 votes

Not to worry, you just wait till his abilities are on cool-down to do work.

Oh yeah, I forgot, he doesn't have cool-downs.

Hmmm, then I guess you just gotta wait till he runs out of mana to engage him.

Err. that's right, he's resourceless.

Maybe you can just out farm him! Good thing his E-Q combo doesn't clear an entire wave or anything.

Or wait.

Enchanté3 votes

I really really hate Yasuo.. Especially those Yasuo mains with all their crit runes criting people all they like early level one with his Q.

He's also very annoying with his E dashing all over your minions (especially when he's chasing you, and this whole bunch of minion wave are coming to the opposite direction of you running. well shit) His laning harassment is really easy.. He just need to make sure his flow is up and dash to the nearest minion from you, hits Q (the circular Q and it crits you) and just when you're about to return some damage he gets to dash back to a safe place to another minion...

Once his third Q is up? dodging won't help. Yasuo just need to dash to a minion close enough to dash to you, then QR. boom /salt

Tweakatronic2 votes

If you want to destroy a yasuo mid play Malzahar. He cannot block anything Malzahar does. Forces Yasuo to go qss early or die repeatedly. When qss is down Malzahar's ult on Yasuo with any reaction from your team means Yasuo is 100% out of every fight when your ult is up unless he sits back and does nothing while waiting for it to be used on someone else.

Also, Yasuo constantly dashing through minions means he will get space aids quite often and get pushed out of lane repeatedly early on. I love Malzahar mid vs Yasuo. It almost feels like an auto win.

Curling Veigar2 votes

yasuo use to be such an easy lane for me.. rito why

JustMyBassCannon2 votes

You know, despite all of these supposed issues, I haven't really had problems with Yasuo in lane, except for a couple times when I let myself get comfortable and gave him a free knock-up to initiate his ult.

Then again, it's a lot easier to fight him when you know which spells bypass Wind Wall, and ways to get around it.

Solidair32 votes

And he used to be even stronger so think about that.

SaltyToplaneGoat2 votes

Is quite simple: use one basic attack, proc the shield, wait 2 seconds, poke him down when the shield is gone. Also, his ult shreds maybe 5 armor at level 6 so... not very impressive. Just get HP, that one works too. item 3191 item 3136 + resource item. Sure, your T2 boots gotta wait a little, but that's it.

iainB852 votes

You have to imagine CertainlyT's design process goes a little something like this:

Hmmm, so what are Yasuo's weaknesses?

He could get easily harassed by ranged -- OK let's give him a shield that negates auto attack harass

Armor might hard counter his burst -- OK let's throw some hidden power in and give his ultimate -50% bonus armor resist

He'll have a hard time maxing out criticial hit chance -- _OK let's just randomly tack onto his passive a x2 multiplier on all critical hit chance items _

Point? Where it feels like well designed champions get a few strong factors, then some weaknesses to make up for them -- CertainlyT's champions feel like he tries to identify all of their weaknesses and fix them with hidden power and passives.

Yasuo deals less dmg (read the crit passive) than any other carry and is squishy (look the base stats of Trynda and Yi and their HP per lvl and compare them to Yasuo). He also has no free AD or AS steroid.

iainB852 votes

They've hit his base stats with nerfs because they had to. His kit was too overloaded to allow him to have normal base stats and be balanced at all. That is a classic CertainlyT design right there.
