PSA: Yasuo's Crit Passive is a good balance lever and is an important part of his kit

Akali is SO HOT··67 votes·3,657 views

It's Riot's way of saying, "Hey idiots, build crit and not bruiser items." This lets them balance Yasuo around building like a melee carry instead of a bruiser so they can nerf him whenever a bruiser build gets strong while not destroying him at the same time. Taking away his crit passive or nerfing it hard would result in him becoming a super aids bruiser forever which I'm sure nobody would like.

In it's current form Yas's passive make his optimal build 2 damage items into tank. He's not incentivized to build any further into damage because he almost caps out on damage from his two items.

Him having interaction with crit isn't bad, but his current interaction makes him want exactly two damage items and not really any more and that's a problem.

There's better ways crit can interact to make Yasuo want crit. Think about how Tryndamere's E works. He wants as much crit as possible so he can have a CD on it that doesn't last an eternity. Tryndamere often builds 3 crit items, he's forced into a more offensive build because his interaction with crit is far better than Yasuo's.

It's impressive how someone could possibly be so wrong. He already has 100% crit so building more AD is worthless? Wanna run how that makes any logical sense whatsoever?

It's worth less than it would be on an average champion who builds crit for a few reasons.

Firstly Yasuo is not insentivized to build more crit unlike other champions who buy crit. How many crit items do you think Ashe/Tryn/Cait/Trist build per game. I think it's over 2 for all of them on average. Yasuo never builds more than 2 crit items.

Secondly Yasuo has a negative multiplier on his crit damage. Buying more damage is less attractive to him because he multiplies it less than another character at high crit percentages. If I'm playing Ashe and I have 3 crit items (this is a common build) I get more value per point of AD per AA than Yas does. Yas gets 225% damage per attack while Ashe gets 230%. Additionally Ashe has had to build more offensively to get to this point and further insentivized to build more offensively because she has more room for multipliers, she can go up to 260%.

Thirdly Yas is a melee, so he's just going to want defensive more than most carries inherently. This isn't a bad thing, but he can currently get away with too little damage. FoB+IE+PD give him as much as he needs. After he gets his 2 items he can just go for Rands/FM/Maw and have an absurdly strong build on both the offensive side and defensive side.

If you're ok with not being able to kill tanks, sure. But no one builds that way because 200 AD simply isn't enough later on in the game, even with 100% crit. Every Yasuo builds, at minimum, a zeal item, an IE, and a lifesteal item. That's the absolute least amount of damage you'll ever see on a full build Yasuo. They'll typically build hybrid items to go with this core as well, such as Mallet, Maw, Edge of Night, etc. The ideal Yasuo build right now isYasuo item 3046 item 3006 item 3031 item 3072 item 3022 item 3156 /item 3026. That's 3 pure damage items, damage oriented boots, and either 2 hybrid items or 1 hybrid and 1 pure defense. Yasuo's base damage simply isn't high enough to build him like a typical bruiser even in you have fervor of battle. By comparion, this is the standard Jax build these daysJax item 3078 item 3146 item 3111 item 3053 item 3143 item 3026. That's 2 damage items, 2 tank items, a hybrid item, and defensive boots. And yet, late game, they're honestly about as threatening to squishies, with Jax being far tankier while Yasuo is better against tanks.

That isn't generally a problem.... Yasuo gains about 60% more per point of crit but he is caped lower with 100% crit for Yasuo being about the same as 80% crit for other champions (not many champions get over 80% crit) Yes it is powerful but it requires building crit... unlike most other steroids which just give AD or AS which is always good and useful

Sraeg20132 votes

With item 3085 around an average ADC build does indeed have 80% crit chance.

That's not accurate at all.

The most generally effective Yasuo build, according to champion.gg, is: item 3046 item 3006 item 3031 item 3072 item 3022 item 3026 So, aside from his two crit items, Yasuo builds two items that are primarily for damage, one that is an offensive utility item, and only one that is actually a purely defensive item.

Its simply not logical to say this is "two items into tank", or to act like a Yasuo with this build is going to be as tanky as someone like a Shyvana, who actually does build two offensive items and four tank items (lifesteal will make him pretty effectively tanky but that's a more widespread problem and another discussion for another time).

He doesn't "cap off on damage after two items" - the next major item he buys, BT, adds a huge 168 damage to his autoattacks. Frozen Mallet adds 67.

His passive doesn't encourage him to go tank after two crit items, it encourages him to get items with at least some AD, because he'll get an effective 2.25x value from that stat. Crit is multiplicative, which means that having 100% crit on its own doesn't mean much - having more AD and attack speed makes that extra crit significantly more valuable.

I'm not going to try to argue that doubled crit chance is the best design, or that there couldn't be some kind of more effective and balanced steroid for Yasuo to have, but his passive in no way encourages building tank items.

Surfer Ashe1 votes

PD and IE alone is hardly considered as "damage"

LankPants3 votes

For any other champ I'd agree. Yasuo gets insane damage off of just those two items though.

Spicy Rice2 votes

Yeah, if he gets it pre 20 mins, which doesn't happen unless he's decently fed

WoonStruck3 votes

If it takes you 20 minutes to get ~6k gold, there's something wrong.

Spicy Rice3 votes

More like 7.1k due to boots.

Oh, let's not forget dorans, potions, wards, etc.

Btw, assuming you get 200 came at 20 mins, that's around 4K gold, sooo

WoonStruck2 votes

You start with 500.

At 20 minutes you've passively gained 2244, not including towers.

Considering creeps are worth more than 20 gold each on average, that's over 7k gold right there.

Besides, you don't rush T2 boots on Yas.

Also, if you haven't been a part of any kills/assists and your team hasn't taken any towers...there's something wrong. That's significantly more gold right there.

I'm full build by 25 minutes sometimes.

TyrekGoldenspear2 votes

Full build at 25 mins?

Teach me your secret...

Akali is SO HOT4 votes

Considering his only steroid comes from his passive and his ult (which only works on crits) it's pretty dumb not building any damage after you finish 2 crit items. If you are only building 2 damage items in a game it means you are either dumb or his bruiser build is busted. All good Yasuo players get 4 damage items and finish it off with a defensive item + GA.

GULAG 4 U1 votes

Trynd doesn't builds 3 crit items.

LankPants1 votes

http://na.op.gg/champion/tryndamere/statistics/top

His second most common core build is literally rushing 3 crit items. How often do you think he'd also grab a 4th or 5th item as a 3rd crit on top of that build? 3 crit items is not uncommon on Tryn.

GULAG 4 U1 votes

That is actually quite surprising, I won't lie. But then, it is 10% of all tryndamere games, it isn't nowhere near often.

LankPants1 votes

That's 10% of all games where he rushes 3 crit items. That doesn't account for him building something like item 3087 > item 3031 > item 3153 > item 3046 .

3 of his 4 most popular items are crit however, so I'm willing to believe that the total number of games where Tryn either builds or is building towards 3 crit items is a lot higher than 10%.

GULAG 4 U1 votes

I'm not a statistics man but that build is a hella lot attackspeed, considering most trynds also run as runes

LankPants1 votes

That's probably fair, it does overcap your attackspeed, so I doubt that build would specifically be super popular. I was more just looking for an example of a 3 item crit build which wouldn't fit in with the 10% rush build.

GULAG 4 U1 votes

Either way I highly doubt it surpasses 20% pickrate

LankPants1 votes

Probably depends on what your talking about. The majority of 6 item endgame builds (as in greater than 50%) probably do have 3 crit items. Once you hit the 'gold no longer matters' point Phantom Dancer becomes a better item than Bezerker's. It's less gold efficient but it's just statistically better. So there is a point in the game where the majority of Tryndamere builds will sell their boots for Phantom Dancer, something that Yasuo doesn't do (in his case this would be SS) because of his design.

GULAG 4 U1 votes

That's why yasuo hits like a noodle compared to rngmere though

lifesteal is making him a drain tank better than warwick and aatrox and olaf combined.

Olaf shouldn't be as good at drain-tanking when he already builds nearly or full tank while having the ability to ignore any CC to stop him from drain-tanking.

Aatrox is intentionally being kept in the garbage can, and Warwick is literally being reworked next month.

Champion Skin6 votes

Olaf isn't that bad since his drain-tanking revolves around dropping low (for increased healing from W and extra attack speed from his passive) but that also makes him more vulnerable to being bursted

Its fun to see how Yasuo "mains" collectively sh* their pants over the announced nerfs :-)

But spreading misinformation will not help you guys. Without the crit passive, bruiser yasuo would not have been the problem he was.

So long, enjoy the nerfs. Lets see if you guys can play any other champions. Given how toxic most of you become when "your" champ is banned, I guess: None ^^

Yes his crit passive was a huge issue when he had this meta build item 3078 item 3022 item 3068 item 3026 item 3065

But keep spreading misinformation please

TF used to have 20% crit my friend. changed to 0% in 6.11 It was that exact fact that made the build so strong in the first place, and the reason why they removed the crit from TF.

Wow, my memory really is amazing. I love my brain.

I literally don't think I have ever played a ranked yasuo game (and only played like 2-3 normals). This is why I called you stupid :/

Akali is SO HOT10 votes

I don't care about Yasuo nerfs I'm just stating a fact lol. Riot is free to nerf his bruiser build whenever it gets strong because his passive forces him to build like a squishy melee carry unless bruiser itemization becomes stupid or if he can abuse an item/mastery really well.

No nerfs where announced. They said they will watch him during the season, like they do with all champions

His crit is not going anywhere deal with it.

No nerfs are coming. They literally said they would watch his game play, his team work, his contribution, like they do with all champions, they literally said nothing about nerfing him and your wetting your pants hoping they will because you lack the skill to beat Yasuo.

Martensitic1 votes

Yes, which is why they constantly announce that they watch all champions...oh wait, no they don't, and they are aware of him being too powerful.

Nerfs are coming, wheter you want it or not :D

because you lack the skill to beat Yasuo.

It is very telling how you phrased that: "to beat Yasuo"...not Yasuo PLAYERS, no, "to beat YASUO".

So you are perfectly aware that the advantage confered here, lies ENTIRELY with the champion played being overpowered, rather than the players playing him being better.

In essence, Yasuo"mains" play a broken champ, and that's the only advantage they have. And they know it. And they are afraid of the inevitable nerf.

Thanks for that ;-)

  1. It does not mean he will get nerfs. The only reason why they said that was because of babies like you.

  2. Nobody gives a shit about that technicality, and the only reason you brought that up was because you didn't want to make your post seem simple and useless.

Martensitic1 votes

its cute how you Yasumains all repeat that like a prayer :D Everytime such an announcement was made, the champion in question was GUTTED shortly afterwards. Its just a matter of time now ;-)

Apparently you do, since you made the effort to devote half your answer to this topic :D

Seems like I found the triggerspot.

Incarceration1 votes
  1. For your information, the only implication they have of changing Yasuo is a rework

  2. The only shit I gave about that technicality was how you used it to give your post some meaning instead of a retarded shitpost coming from another baddie like you who can't handle him.
