Isn't Morellonomicon a little overrated? Or is Morellonomicon that good?

A question that I have:

item 3165 isn't a bad item, it is actually a very good item, but is Morellonomicon that good on every situation? I see people building this for just about any AP champion that uses mana, many times on situations where item 3174 or item 3027 would be a better option.

For example, as I said on another thread; even though Malzahar doesn' have any options for cooldown reduction, I use Rod of Ages. Why? Because his range is below average. He needs the tankyness that Rod of Ages offers, otherwise he is way more prone to be instakilled during teamfights, even more so than champs such as Orianna and Viktor due to his lack of a shield. With the runes and the build I do for Malzahar, he usually ends up with 3000 HP, almost as much as a bruiser champion. This doesn't allow him to tank for his team, it just allows him to survive the initial burst.

Not to mention, Malzahar's abilities cost too much mana. His E can recover mana, but it's only reliable for the laning phase. Morellonomicon does not make him recover mana quickly enough during situations where he needs to spam abilities.

Malzahar isn't the only one I do that. Lissandra and Chogath also have a short range and needs the survivability offered by Rod of Ages, on my opinion. I just can't play them without Rod of Ages. Cho'Gath gets tanky with his ultimate, but I still need the flat mana offered by Rod of Ages.

On some champions, such as Lulu and Ziggs, I use Athene's Unholy Grail because they use so much mana that I need a way to be able to more consistently recover mana, and Athene's is better than Morellonomicon in that regard. The only situation where I use Morellonomicon is when the enemy team is full AD.

Is Morellonomicon that good on just about every situation? When Athene's was buffed, I was expecting that people would stop building Morellos and that Athene would outshine it, yet that wasn't what happened.

it´s more like chalice is that bad now...you need too much mana in order to really start noticing the additional reg from chalice, so for the midgame morellos just gives a way better spike and lategame you seldom have manaissues on most Champs.

Athenes is more defensive than Morellos but both are still good. Just depends on what you are trying to do and what the enemy team has.

Not defensive enough. Or maybe Defensive midlaners arn't appreciated. Personally I would have liked to see more MR on Athenes.

Morello's has more AP, same cdr, less mane regen, and no MR at a lower cost. Athene's might be better IF you could draw out the laning phase and win war of poke and Mana attrition. But this is less prevalent because Hyper farming Midlaners have lost their edge with the Jungle changes. Also because high damage mage/assassins can kill with Morello's well before mana becomes a problem.

I really like the passive on athenes personally.

what i would love to see is a buff to athenes manfound(atleast 3%missing mana/5) and increasing thr mr to40, but moveing the mana-gain on kill/assist to morellos while upping morellos goldcost to athemese level(maybe add a spellbook) aswell as increasing the ap to ~90-100

This should put both items on equal goldcosts, compareable manasustain(morello potentially bit more but only if you get the kills/assist, athens a bit less but more consistant), while one offering some nice defense, the other some more offense.

Grievous Wounds, bro. Seriously though, I like Athene's better, and only get Morello if I'm facing sustain-based opponents.

Grievous Wounds is a good effect but the enemy doesn't always have enough sustain champions to make the passive worth. When the enemy has champions such as Vladimir, Swain and/or Dr. Mundo, it's very good; but sometimes I see that being built against teams without any sustain

If they have an ADC who has a lifesteal item, it is almost always worth having grievous wounds, and Morello's is an easy way to get that (especially since it isn't on a cooldown like ignite.

Important to remember that Morellonomicon only works when the enemy is under 40% HP

A burst mage should (generally speaking) be able to drop the ADC below 40% with one rotation, if not kill them outright. Boom, they are now inflicted with Grievous Wounds.

junglerboy161 votes

Like Darien Juranas mentioned, most mages can drop an ADC that low in a single rotation, and the key aspect of the Grievous wounds is to keep them from healing back up once you've nuked them out, which generally makes it easier to finish them off. If you have a very poke or utility centric mage, it can be harder to get someone low enough for the grievous wounds to take effect, but most burst mages make excellent use of it.

Morellonomicon is insanely gold efficient. You don't need to count grevious wounds for it to be worth it.

I dunno anymore. I mean I love the CDR and the AP isn't bad. However I just feel like it and Athene's don't really help out with mana as much as they could/should. I've gotten to the point where instead of rushing mana regen (might do that when behind) I'm now focusing more on damage items because I don't feel like mana is worth anymore. Also I don't use many champs that need a tear.

aaronautumn1 votes

the mana regen on athene's isn't as good as it was and most champs don't need the extra regen past lane phase.

junglerboy161 votes

Depends.

Against Aatrox DrMundo Fiddlesticks Nasus Olaf Soraka Swain Trundle Vladimir Warwick and other sustain heavy champs (Also any ADC with Lifesteal), it is beyond amazing.

Against most non sustain champs, not so much. It is cheaper and faster to rush, while offering higher damage and kill potential and less defense and mana regen than Athene's, but is overall slightly less slot efficient.

I'm a big fan of the morelloryliandry's burn. It's probably only effective on brand and teemo, but it's a big middle finger to the enemy when they get hit and can't stop their impending death with heals because of grievous wounds

Funny story, Luden's Echo procs Liandry's burn. I've never really seen a situation where it'd be important, but it's kinda interestingly weird.

And DoTs can proc luden's twice if you move around/cast enough

dpends, but if you either get blue or play a not to mana hungry champ, Morellos just is the most effecktive cdr item, lower goldcost than athenes and more ap, RoA doesn't offer sustain, so you have to back some more frequently, but u shouldn't have much mana probs in fights if you mange it right. However, it doesn't give cdr, and there isn't a good cdr/ap item that doesn't also give mana sustain...

item 3023 , but I see your point.

Sire Hippington1 votes

Well, there would also be item 3152, but both items are rather bad in slot-efficiency, only offer 10%cdr and give compareable low ap, which means together with roa, you will loose out quite some damage also, you want your manna fixed as soon as possible, and u usually want cdr as soon as possible, thus haveing both in one item is far more convinient, building RoA+a lowish ap/cdr item delays your heavy ap/magic-pen items quite alot, costing alot damag in the midgame.

Drunk Rummate1 votes

I like morello because it provides more damage at a lower cost than athenes and the magic resist on athenes feels like it never really helps against the champions i would need to build it against. Best option is usually to just keep as far away from those champions as possible and/or dodge their shit. 25 Mr won't save you from a Ludens Leblanc.
