There is a difference between a champion that is weak early game and vulnerable early game

I was reading a thread about Vayne and someone said that she does not have and never had a weak early game, she just had a vulnerable early game. Her early game was always pretty decent, due to her safety and her powerful steroid. But since other ADCs used to have a better early game with stronger steroids or early burst damage, Vayne always seemed to be weak.

It is important to note that Vayne's early game is actually strong and really oppressive against most top laners, which is why she is used sometimes as a top laner; if you are melee, good luck farming against Vayne, and what is worse, no top laner can outscale her (apart from Vladimir). The only reason why she isn't popular top is because she is really squishy and people don't seem to understand that if you have an "ADC" at a lane other than bot lane, you don't need to use an ADC bot lane, you can replace him with an early game bruiser, for example, to try to shut down the enemy ADC.

But back to the thread's subject; there are some champions said to have a weak early game, when they are actually just vulnerable; which means that they either have a strong early, or have a lot of safety/trading/killing potential, they just have a weakness early game that can be exploited. Apart from Vayne, another great example of a champion who is vulnerable (not weak) early game is Yasuo. He actually has a lot of cheesing potential during the early, his mobility and trading potential is immense. His weakness that can be exploited is that he is really squishy and if his all-ins do not go right he will have a hard time for the rest of the lane phase until he can finish his core items; Yasuo either wins or lose trades, and if he loses trades, he will have a hard time recovering from them.

Another example is Katarina, she is said to have a weak early game, but she is actually just vulnerable. Vulnerable in that you can potentially bully and harass her out of lane. However, she is completely resourceless, has a ranged point-and-click poke, her trading potential is actually decent, and she has a instablink to escape from ganks. On top of that, Katarina has a ridiculous snowball potential, so if she happens to get ahead, she becomes a oppresive force. She also has decent waveclear.

To be honest, there are very few champions who are actually weak early game. Three good examples are Poppy, Fiddlesticks, and Kog'Maw.

Poppy lacks any trading potential, is extremely mana hugry, is vulnerable to harass, has extremely limited mobility (so she is vulnerable to ganks too) and is completely dependent from items to be able to scale well. She also lacks poke and sustain. Also, she lacks waveclear, and has a hard time farming.

Fiddlesticks is really squishy, vulnerable to all-ins, need items to scale well, his harass is weak, and lacks waveclear so he can be outpushed. This lack of waveclear is made worse due to the fact that Fiddlesticks is an AP champion with an horrible auto-attack animation and base AD, so it is extremely hard to last hit with him. When going jungle, Fiddlesticks is also vulnerable to counterjungle, and his early game is made worse due to the fact that he doesn't scale well with Runeglaive.

KogMaw, when going bot lane, he is weak because most ADCs can out-trade him, he is easy to bully, vulnerable to all-ins and ganks, and depends from items to scale well. He also lacks waveclear, but thankfully it is not hard to last hit with him.

You bring up some really good points in most of this. Though I have to disagree about Kog'Maw. He's seeing professional play and laning perfectly fine against Corki, Sivir, etc. He has a lot of lane power but also scales well. I really do like the idea of how you differentiate between weak and vulnerable. For example, Mordekaiser is actually weak early game not just vulnerable. He is the only champion that uses health as a resource that doesn't have some sort of innate sustain in his kit and he has the 4th lowest health regen at level 1 in the entire game on top of that. I mean you can argue that he also is vulnerable because he naturally pushes so hard in the laning phase without an escape as well but he is certainly innately weak kit wise before he can build spell vamp and AP to empower that.

Asides from vladimir insane sustain with his Q (which btw is free, click and point ) the other champions that use health as resource back struggle. Zac Barely cover the cost of using the ability itself so after using an ability he will be at 0 net health cost at best of the cases. DrMundo Passive won't cover the cost of usign your abilities, your hp will go down fast until you have your ult and can sustain forever. Aatrox Eventough has a strong regen if you are able to farm is really no different than the way of sustain other tops have (Irelia or XinZhao) so in the end using his abilities can be a double-edge swrd.

Zac's abilities cost % current health but blobs heal % max health. So you actually always heal more for what you spend as long as you pick up blobs. The problem then is if you miss an ability you don't generate a blob or of course enemies can step on your blobs to get rid of them.

Mundo's early sustain isn't great but his refund on his Q and health regen steroid on his passive do help mitigate some of his costs. Not necessarily offset them entirely but his innate sustain is better than nothing. Come late game his passive is actually monstrously strong though. Plus he is rewarded for building health and health regen because of its synergy in his kit.

I mean that is the design though for champs that use health it is supposed to give them an early game hurdle to overcome in exchange for not being punishing at all late game when they have a larger health pool. So that is where it is a vulnerability rather than a weakness for that archetype. But Morde is the only champion that uses health as a resource that has NO form of innate sustain / refunds / incentive to operate at low health. So in that sense I think he is actually "weak" compared to other champions who share the same "vulnerability" if that makes a little more sense.

He may not have sustain but his passive make trades basically free, while the other champions will still get low on the trades plus the cost of using the abilities.

Unless he takes the damage before his shield goes up, or if you fight not around minions, or if they just simply stay out of range to get hit by your trades which isn't hard while watching you spam your health bar trying to compete in wave clear. He does have innate strengths but you're over rating the current state of his passive shield within his kit.

For example if they are ranged like Xerath and you use abilities to build up a shield to block Xerath Q, sure you mitigate how much damage you take by accepting the health cost in exchange for blocking most of the ability damage but you're still losing more health than Xerath because he is obviously not in range of your damage.

This thread makes sense, but keep in mind the terms "weak" and "strong" are relative.

Vayne's early game is weak compared to almost all other adcs, and that's the lane she is played in the most.

Yasuo is EXTREMELY Strong against most mages in every stage of the game (or he used to be before Riot gutted the shit out of him for the sake of Ahri), but he has always been EXTREMELY Weak against almost anything that is melee.

Mundo for example, can wipe the floor with Yasuo with no trouble, and Mundo has a weak early game compared to all other bruisers.

Another thing is a champions strength according to the match up they are in.

Our current Fiora is actually very good at every stage of the game and can actually beat Brutal lane bullies such as Darius, but if she ever meet a "decent" Malphite player, she won't even be able to auto attack and will therefor be very weak. The most she can do in this lane is try to use her Blade Waltz on top of Unstoppable Force to avoid dying.

And just like Mundo, Malphite isn't exactly a strong laner. He is only trully useful against auto attackers and gets trashed by everything else.
