Against the meta

So... Just to clear the air, first and foremost... I'm a relatively new player. Started maybe a week and a half ago at my brother's urging. I'm enjoying the game, for someone who's playing on 600 ping, giving them a slower reaction time than others and causing them to miss quite a number of certain attacks. No one's really complained about it so far.

Anyways, what I'm posting this thread about is as follows.

My first legend, and currently the one I consider to be my main, is Rumble. (Who I've seen no one talk about on the forums so far.) My brother's had me running Rumble top, and until yesterday, I thought that Rumble's lane was always top. Then another friend, who's played longer and has much more experience, told me Rumble is supposed to be in the jungle. (Well, it'd certainly explain the Rumble in the Jungle skin!)

Now, as a level 7 player, running the jungle seems to be a VERY bad idea, since Smite is, evidently, required. (I can see why, at least.) And, as far as I can tell, Rumble does a pretty good job in the top lane. But I'm the type of player who does their best to avoid the rage and salt of others. (Though, as a former Team Fortress 2 player, you'd think I'm well used to salt by now...) I'd like to remain a Rumble main, but I don't want to play jungle. I tried it once, and it just felt... wrong, if that makes any sense in the least.

So what I'm asking is, how bad would it be to play against the meta? Bad, very bad, terribly bad? Personally, I'd just turn off chat and play, ignore the salt, and show that I'm pretty decent rolling top, but I'd also rather not have reports on me for playing the game how I want to play...

Not bad at all. Unless you have a plan to win it's good. Try to make sure you're not jeopardizing your teammates too much though.

As long as you do your best and have some idea of what you're doing on X champion, you can play that champion pretty much wherever you'd like.

I mean, use common sense of course -- for example taking Soraka as a bottom lane carry is ... not using common sense.

But feel free to experiment with the practice tool and try out different champions, rune pages, and item builds, then head into normal draft queue and play it out.

Sometimes you'll win, sometime's you'll lose; the important thing is that you are having fun and working as a teammate just as you would with any "meta pick" in whatever role you choose.

Basically, if you're mostly a top laner, make sure you do your best in top. If you're a jungler, make sure you do your best in the jungle, etc.

The champion pick is up to you.

If others start harassing you or griefing about your choice, mute them in-game (you can now mute their pings, too!).

Remember, never engage toxicity with more toxicity; don't stoop to someone's level and verbally harass/abuse them back under the falsehood of "I'm just defending myself!". That is not acceptable behavior and Riot WILL punish you if someone reports you for doing so.

Remember the old addage, "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all". Ignore the trolls and toxic kiddies, mute them, keep playing, report them end of game if you have to. Don't engage them in a verbal sparring match.

TL;DR: You can play pretty much any champion you want to play in any role you want to play; just use common sense when it comes to 'off-meta' picks and itemization; ignore the flamers and haters and harassment -- never engage them back with toxicity or you will get punished as well. Enjoy the game, be a good teammate and that's all Riot asks of you.
