Few things about Soraka

sobi999··5 votes·2,530 views

So as a soraka main with over 200k+ mastery (not bragging), i feel like i need to share few things with the community. I'll try my best to make this short.

First of all and foremost, in soloq it is much better for raka to have summoner 7 and the adc summoner 3. One, because raka sacrifices 10% max health to heal you and two, because raka wants to avoid all forms of damage and stay as far behind as possible. Think of her life bar as her mana. She won't be able to heal (do her job) if her health goes too low just like how a mage becomes useless as its mana is depleted. I know pros take exhasut on soraka but you have to acknowledge the fact that all of their picks are well thought counter picks and have a great team composition. In soloq it is different and as a raka main i know how much protection she herself needs as a squishy support without any reliable cc to escape. Therefore heal on raka in soloq is not something you shouldn't expect but rather, it could be more beneficial for you the longer raka stays alive and for those who didn't know the %healing items also boost summoner heal. Leave the burden of managing your health bar on her shoulders and do as much damage as possible to compensate for the lack of damage she has.

Secondly, i know people hate laning against raka but that's usually because you choose poke mages or supports that love dealing poke damage Karma Lulu into raka. This is a bad idea as soraka's sustain is way too good in lane since she can easily throw those Q's to sustain in lane where things happen much more slowly as in compared to team fights.

Another thing i want to mention is that, raka works really well with early game champs like jhin, cait, draven as she herself has a very weak early laning phase that the adc can compensate for. The more poke the adc has the better for you as you'll easily be able to out-sustain the enemy and then dive them when they are low on hp. She is not too good at dealing with ganks as the slow and snare on her Q and E are not very reliable especially since the mobility creep is so damn bad now. So an adc with a dash can also work well with her. If you go someone like vayne with raka then you must play safe in the lane early on as you both are late gamers. Nonetheless, the trick to laning with her is to learn to poke and farm as an adc and out-sustain your enemies in lane.

Why i think raka is a late gamer eventhough she is really dominant in lane, in most match-ups. Her W cooldown reduces significantly from level 1-5 and the fact that support items are just wayy too good right now makes her a late game champ. Not to mention her ult is just fab in team fights.

You should also know that raka has a very hard time dealing with thresh, leona, alistar and blitz that can hook or have non-stop cc, especially in soloq where you don't have much coordination and team work with your adc. Her sustain against these champs does not work so well because they love to dive in and cc your adc until the enemy adc can get a kill. Usually you'll heal and exhaust your own life bar fast enough to regenerate from your constant Q's against these match ups. Even against other sustain supports like nami and sona, raka has a very hard time dealing with them because of them having poke damage, cc in combination with sustain. Nami is actually a good counter pick on soraka in pro play as her Q followed up by the enemy adc's damage can really be lethal and raka won't be able to sustain the adc fast enough. You'll be in trouble if raka gets Q'd since she regenerates her health much more slowly (with Q's) than she can heal her adc, so avoid damage as much as possible.

The point i am trying to get across is that as much as you guys like to believe that raka is cancer because of her healing, she has clear weaknesses and counter play. She is frustrating to play against if you go poke champs against her but that's because sustain counters poke and burst counters sustain. Now the difference between raka and other tanks and sustain supports is that raka's whole kit focuses on heals incomparison to sona and nami that have sustain and cc/damage or janna with her really good cc and sustain.

There are things that really hinder raka that people do not notice. Firstly, no one cares or even knows the burden that raka has by healing you and sacrificing 10% of her max health. This means that if she goes tank raka that 10% max health means alot and this is also the reason why buying hp items on raka is not recommended. The math below will explain why.

if raka buys item 3107 and item 2302 she gains 400 extra hp. At level 18 she has 1855 hp (without adding in runes and masteries). With 400hp extra she has 2255hp at level 18. Depending on items she usually has 70 AP (counting 10 AP from runes), and about 30% extra healing from items and mastery. With those stats she'll heal for about 315hp at level 18 (taking into account all items and masteries).

Therefore at level 18 she'll sacrifice 10% of 2255 max hp (225) to heal for 315hp. If she didn't have the 400 extra hp she would have sacrificed 185 hp to heal 315hp, which as you can see is much more beneficial. Since her healing costs 10% MAX health, she can stack as much hp as she wants but she'll still only be able to heal the same amount. Therefore spending money on AP or %healing item, or MR/Armor is much better for her than pure hp. Although redemeption and Eye of oasis are a must on her so you got to live with what you have. Some of you may want to buy item 3083 on her but that'll usually be your 5-6th item and you'll activate the passive at around level 15+. I can't remember the last game i had where i got all 6 items, not to mention the passive deactivates upon taking damage and the 800hp extra on warmogs really hurts raka's healing potential.

As you see, raka is literally healing (315-225 = 105hp) extra for 70 mana without sacrificing any of her health for it. Now compare this to nami's W that can heal upto maximum of 3 targets. With 30% healing from items (same as raka) and she usually goes (item 2301 or item 3092 ) that'll give her minimum of 35AP more. Therefore with 30%healing and about 100AP minimum, nami's W will heal maximum of 3 allies for 215HP ( i know it bounces off enemies as well). The point is that she has to sacrifice 0 health to heal for 215hp on max 3 allies or minimum 1 ally and damage 2 enemies, whereas soraka heals for 105hp after taking into account the amount of health she loses in return. Sona would heal multiple allies for 145+hp ( and the shield) and she usually goes athenes whos's passive works wonders with her passive and boosts her healing and shield. Then again with no personal health cost.

To sum it all up, all other enchanters either have sustain + damage or sustain + peel or damage + peel compared to soraka who has literally no damage but a really good sustain. She becomes a stupid heal BOT later on in the game as you can literally spam her W but you must know that it costs her 10% MAX health and that she'll go oom soon. If you check stats then sona, nami , janna are all good picks against her and obviously leona, thresh, alistar and blitz. Her winrate and pickrate has gone down and she sees much less pro play than before. More people have realized that item 3123 counters her and some mages counter her without even knowing it item 3165 . Soon item 3075 will have GW on it as well and don't forget summoner 14 . In addition abilities like Katarina ult and item 3033 coupled with item 3085 can apply GW on multiple targets at once. There goes her whole team on GW without any effort from the enemy and now raka is healing for -40% ( 315 x 0.6 = 189hp) and her ult also suffers as its so easy to apply GW now. So now raka is healing for 189hp and sacrificing 225hp at level 18! She is suppose to be a late gamer but right now because of GW she is not. First i thought "lets avoid healing those who have GW applied on them" but clearly now i have realized that my whole team has GW in team fights and there is no indicator as well. She is really bad at peeling whatsoever, is a squishy support that has a restricted build path, thanks to her 10% max health sacrifice and her kit predominantly focuses on heals.

So those who have read through this all, how is GW not hurting her more than it is hurting other supports? item 3123 can be bought so early on and item 3033 item 3165 are a perfectly fine build paths for adc's and mages. How is it that you are countering raka without even having to do anything? Nami, sona and janna can live with this as they have alot of other stuff in their kits but raka is really suffering. If you think she heals alot, because she does but with a juicy cost on it, then tell riot to give her more damage or peel and cut her healing down. She has clear identifiable weaknesses, her whole kit shouldn't be destroyed with items that are perfectly normal for intended class to build, which are not just cheap but the enemy doesn't have to compensate anything to build them i.e. item 3165. If anyone can suggest a rework or changes to GW that can help soraka then please share it with me and maybe just maybe riot will listen.

Thank you for this.

Mastery 6 with 2 tokens, I love her to death and I love this post you made to address many of her problems and show people who don't like her how to beat her.

I think you're bad with Soraka and should consider trying a different support like Kayle or Nidalee for a while.

A very thoughtful answer, i shall consider it.

Or singed support with smite and get permabanned for toxicity

You're thinking Soraka does no damage because you are maxing W and probably even start W level 1. Obviously if you go 'heal bot build' you won't do any damage. Even simply starting Q while still maxing W has her winning more often than starting W, with putting at least a couple more points in Q before maxing W performing even better. Her Q damage goes up to a decent amount of damage given the low cool down with the self heal and heal over time for the ally increasing with rank.

Also, don't get me started on how good her E is, not only does it stop champions like Zed completely from being able to ult your carry unless you use it for some reason, but it works really well with most champions in order to get the full silence duration into the root. Issue I see with many Sorakas is they don't try to get the most out of their E and use it when ever. It's also a good way to deter fights at all in the jungle due to it blocking the entire path, if they walk through it they risk dying or will be rooted anyways stopping their chase. Then if you have a jungler with CC that ganks you just pop your E as they cc and you get the full silence+root an and a kill.

Also out of the champions you listed only Blitzcrank actually wins, but Blitz does well against basically all supports other than Janna and a couple melee champions.

I don't think I've ever lost to a heal bot Soraka, at best they are very frustrating, but only because they prevent kills, similar to Shen or Kayle pressing R. Also, the fact Soraka still performs above average even while played as a passive heal bot suggests Soraka is not being screwed over at all.

By the way champion mastery doesn't mean you're very experienced with the champion. I hardly get to support and I normally win when I play Soraka against mid plat~low Diamond opponents. My GF is also over 200k mastery with a 67% win rate in ranked over 76 games

Mastery is but a factor and i used it to show that i had experience with her as a backup evidence for the claims i made. If i went into detail about every move of soraka this post would have been twice as long and also the fact that i compared her with other sustain supports, i had to focus on just the heals. She has gone down to 51% winrate with 5% playrate and her ban rate is negligible. Statistics also show that she loses more than 50% of matchups against thresh, janna, blitz and sona and nami which means she is pretty much at disadvantage at most games as these are very popular supports. The only support that she does good against, and that are commonly played, are are karma and lulu.

Her E needs to be placed well, its like a skill shot and has a very high CD. Also please don't teach me how to E to prevent ganks, even a kid can work that up. It is but a situational move as the enemy is not just going to stay on the E and get rooted unless he is boosted. For example a lee sin comes to gank, his Q has more range than my E. I place E slightly forward so that he gets rooted if he takes that path but he Q's me before he steps on silence and woosh. Also to get all of the silence is very situational and most of the times you either have to place the E at a distance to get the root and miss out on silence and vice versa.

I usually get Q if the enemy supp is tank or lacks pokes and usually go W when enemy has a lot of poke so that my adc can farm in peace. So many times i went Q first and the enemy got enough pokes on my adc that it stopped farming. Therefore you must be careful with what you go first. Her Q is really good for laning but since you seem to lack experience with her you don't realize that if you level Q up too much early on, it'll really be easy to poke the adc to low health as well as burst it down, which is actually your biggest fear. W just scales so much better. I also clearly stated the fact that you need to avoid all forms of damage with her to be as effective as possible and i certainly wouldn't want a thresh's or blitz hook to just pull out a Q on them. Obviously when there are minions, it is but an easy task but the enemy is not stupid as well. Now since her ability have a cost they obviously have a benefit attached to them so does nami's and sona and janna's abilities have, therefore you cannot say that E can silence and expect me to believe she is broken. As GW is being more and more common and people are learning that soraka = get item 3123 then she will continue to suffer. She has a decent winrate mostly because support items are insanely strong and the fact that games don't last as long thus enemy might not have bought item 3123 item 3085. Lastly when you said that you never lost a lane against her, that pretty much summed up the fact that you agree with me.

Neither of the sites I checked shows the statistics you're talking about. Champion.GG shows her at 52.5% for plat+ (rising each patch), graphs shows her 52%+ for all ranks. Matchup wise blitz is at 47.6% with Sona 49%, Naut and Alistar 49.3/4% and every other champion close to 50% or higher. This means Blitz is truly the only champion actually winning against Soraka as everything else is roughly equal or in her favor.

Executioners also only costs 800g and is bought frequently early against Sorakas in my games and my team still wins anyways.

Also, 5 % pick rate is 10th place putting her top 10 for popularity and top 4 for win rate in the support role.

Only if you want to ignore context to support your agenda. I said, I have never lost a game to a heal bot Soraka. IE, those Sorakas that don't do much beyond heal and hope they get carried. While I also said my girlfriend plays Soraka all the time, meaning there's one in nearly all my games while winning most of them, nearly 70%.

Lots of people have stated that champion.gg is not reliable as the sample size they use are small and i may be wrong but riot also stated that op.gg is more reliable. Therefore i would look at something as important as winrate from the most reliable website and according to op.gg her winrate is 51.03% and playrate 6.19% https://euw.op.gg/champion/soraka/statistics/support

It says she loses matchups against thresh, sona and blitz. Although it says she wins against janna, alistar and leona and pretty much equal with nami. However if you look at other websites

lol graphs http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/counters/soraka

champion.gg http://champion.gg/champion/Soraka/Support?league=plat

and these (not sure about reliability) http://www.counterstats.net/league-of-legends/soraka http://www.elophant.com/league-of-legends/champion/soraka/matchups

Firstly you'll notice that sona, janna, nami, leona, thresh , blitz and alistar are common counters to soraka as well as have negative winrate against her. However some websites alternate between them but these supports nonetheless are included in the counter section usually. Especially blitz, thresh and sona are usually her biggest counters and as for nami, i heard commentators say in LCS that she is a common counter pick for soraka and after facing her 100 of times i can understand why. A 200k mastery surely should indicate to you that i am not one of those soraka that max W and sit behind turret and talk to their girl friends on phone and just go up to heal adc. Its for people like you that i had to mention the mastery the very first thing because you tend to assume everyone sucks and only you know how to play a champ which is not even your main without even backing it up with sufficient evidence and reasoning.

You should probably read your sources, some of them are using different ranks than what I am talking about, or are for Korea only. KR only statistics are different than statistics outside of KR. CH/KR Metas are also from time to time vastly different than ours too. Unless you happen to be playing on KR none of it is going to matter. Even one of your other sources lists Soraka at 52-53% with an 8% pick rate that had been increasing over patches, that is different than your "51% slowly declining 5%".

Another contradiction is you said champions like Cait, Draven etc work best with her yet your source shows late game adcs like Twitch, Vayne, etc being listed as works best with her with Cait and Draven below them.

No, 200k means you just played the champion a lot. Your 200k is also canceled by my over 200k anyways. Your first post is contradicting yourself too, just like your chosen sources. You said Soraka should take heal instead of Exhaust while the ADC takes Exhaust, why? "because raka wants to avoid all forms of damage and stay as far behind as possible."

Hiding behind the ADC means you're not doing your job beyond healing, you can't Q anyone because unless there's a melee on top of your carry you are out of range to Q, and you most likely won't be using E either. That leaves W and R, your heals.

You said Soraka has low non-heal protection and damage, why? Your match history shows you maxing W even against melee supports like Braum. You buy coin instead of spell thief, spell thief lets Soraka get in and out with the moves peed after 650 gold in addition to damage in lane. You don't know Q is a slow, E is a silence/root and the move speed when running away from landing Q applies to allies when you use W.

You're wasting your time and changing the subject when you see fit. You obviously did not read the first part of my answer where i clearly stated that winrate should only be taken from the most reliable source and op.gg is by far the most reliable and even confirmed by riot, if i am not mistaken.

"You should probably read your sources, some of them are using different ranks than what I am talking about, or are for Korea only"

The reason i pasted so many sources was to show the common counter picks to soraka and i whatsoever did not use them for winrate. Most of these websites confirm with me regarding the usual counters to soraka.

Lastly i have 240k+ mastery with her and Lvl 6 with 3 tokens. I also clearly explained why she should take heal. I can use summoner heal even when i am ahead of the adc you know and so can i use W xD. Also her Q has more range than her W

I take Q into braum first to get some nice pokes. I max W if i my adc is taking way too many pokes which in soloq is often the case. I think you tend to duo with your girl friend alot so you really don't know how bad some adc's can be. You should also look at my deaths, even when my team is rofl stomped, my deaths are but negligible so you could at least say that i am not contributing to feeding as a support. Soraka is much more vulnerable to deaths because of her lack of CC and max health sacrifice.

Maxing Q in lane does work against melee tanks like braum but it gets rid of the potential for your adc to all in and survive ganks. We also won against braum without any effort. Guess why? Because varus has great poke potential and he was doing his job so very well that i felt i had to focus on keeping him alive as long as possible. You don't realize the potential W has when it goes to lvl 5 and bot towers do not last for long. Any ganks can be lethal and lastly i would love to see how much your Q helps you when you are pushing lane and you get ganked by a common jungler (lee sin) as compared to nami or janna's Q. Another thing you should check is the stats, which almost indefinitely say that maxing W with soraka has by far the highest winrate.

You should also pay attention to your health because clearly your maths is weak. As shown in my first post, your health bar is like your mana bar. The faster it depletes the less contribution you'll make to the team as otherwise how would you heal? This is what separates soraka from many other champs as her health bar is also vital for her to function well. If you go straight ahead with soraka taking hits so that your adc doesn't take hits then i am sorry to say but you heal greater than you sacrifice your own health. Why waste your own precious hp when that hp can be transferred to the ally plus additional hp with it. This is to say that you have yet not gotten any armor/mr in which case you could obviously take some hits and use Q to get some health back.

Before i end this post, you should read the conclusion of every post because it sums up what are the main points in it. Obviously you need to write more reports or journals so that you don't waste peoples time. You changed this whole post from GW affecting soraka to how to use soraka. Thanks for teaching me. Now, do you have to say anything in regards to how GW works and any maths to back your conclusion up or the fact that later on soraka is healing less than she is sacrificing health with 70 mana cost means anything? Don't forget all the different ways GW can be applied on allies with no effort. Please do not spread toxic to every other thread you go and make some useful discussion for the community.
