Hey guys. I was trying to learn some basics of painting in photoshop.

Turns out I got Leona going from an exersize in my hands now. So here you go for your enjoyment.

Uh... well it looks like you got the very basics down. Maybe learn/practice with a bit of tracing? :D

Keep at it and you'll be a photoshop god in no time!

Thing is I was originally trying to trace some splashart for Shivana, but I learned that I could not do it. What I expected to learn from that was lighting but I realized that I cant even do basic skin. So after several hours I got this. and I could not find it in myself to add so desired lighting so I posted it like a true atention whore to se what will people say.

How do you trace painting if what you need to know is procedure and not the result of it?

Okay you've lost me. What do you mean by lighting and procedure?

If you said "What do you think of the lighting in this image?" with the image you posted, I would say it seems solid. You seem to understand shadows just fine and using dark lines for contouring. If you're talking about something else you'll need to be a bit more specific like, "How do I do reflections/peachy anime skin/etc?" for example.

Also, I don't know what you mean by procedure here. Are you talking about layers? Are you talking about drawing procedure (sketch > gray > colour > polish) ?

Well firstly I am sorry. Seems that my english is not so great after all.

Secondly, what I though you ment by tracing, was to take some picture and try to* "paint it again"* Going from that point by procedure I meant "how do you do it". Because just by simply looking at it you will not learn that. And by lighting i meant that even though I have base lighting there I originally wanted to do colored lights. (e.g. bright blue light)

I must say I am missing a lot of words to lead meaningful conversation about art.

Actually my conclusion of my hardship in painting is lack of knowledge of photoshop and what it can do. I do not actually know how to set my brushes and what brushes are good for this and that.

Aha, I see. Don't worry about your English, misunderstandings happen all the time.

There are many photoshop tutorials on Youtube. You can search "Photoshop Brush Tutorial" or something and you'll get plenty of results. I'm sure you can find ones that will suit your needs.

As for tracing, start getting whatever image you want to copy into photoshop, put it on the bottom layer and make it see-through (edit opacity). Lock that image on the bottom layer and do your tracing practice over it on separate layers. You can have a layer that is just using the pencil tool to make the outlines, have another one for all the colours, etc. Most basic tutorials should go through this.

I think you did a great job. It may not be perfect, but nothing ever is :p The most important part is that you are trying and learning. I suggest collecting as much reference as you can. I literally have thousands of pictures to pull poses, lighting, faces and anatomy from. I've been doing this for so long now that most of the time I don't really need them past the base idea. If you use a tablet you can change some settings in PS in your brush tab to pen pressure that really helps make it feel more like drawing with pencil and shading becomes 1000x easier! Keep it up! Looking forward to seeing more :)

Thousands of reference pictures you say? I always wanted to be the person who studies the thing and then is able to draw it from any angle. Though I have not been succsessful I though it is the right way.

It seems that I have been wrong and it is much easier to learn by exprience then by pure intelignce. I will now go to collect my thousand pictures :D
