Factions is a community-powered game mode built around faction versus faction matches, such as Demacia vs. Zaun, which are fought using faction-specific Champion lists. Matches are organized as custom games. Anyone can start a match anytime, and we also have shoutcasted tournaments on the weekends. Match results are submitted online for scoring, and affect the course of the story. Although matches are the centerpiece of Factions, we do also have interactive lore events in which Summoners can vote on what their factions should do next.

Factions is organized into storylines, with each one lasting about three months and featuring a different set of playable factions. (We limit playable factions to about four at any one time, primarily to avoid dispersing the playerbase too broadly and to keep it easy to organize matches.) We've completed four so far, and are now in the midst of a fifth. This fifth arc, Hextech Revolution, features Piltover, Bandle City, Zaun, and Demacia, fighting for control of the "dark sand", a Void-touched arcane energy source newly discovered in the Shuriman Desert.
