Some Champion allegiances are a bit unorthodox. They might be on the roster they're on because they fit the faction's theme (e.g. Kayle blends in well with Demacia's shining-armor aesthetic), because of lore developments within the Factions universe (e.g. Riven helps Piltover out of hatred for its rival Zaun), or because they accentuate the faction's distinctive gameplay (e.g. Janna's disengage power meshes with Piltover's poke-oriented strategy).

Factions is a community-powered game mode in which Summoners declare for factions, such as Piltover or Zaun, and fight matches against other factions using faction-specific Champion lists. Match outcomes drive the course of a developing storyline, in the spirit of Riot's original Noxus vs. Ionia matches.

Most Factions matches are pick-up matches which anyone can start or join, with the results being submitted online for scoring. This weekend, we are hosting a tournament. These matches are worth extra points and will have an especially strong storyline impact.

These are organized as "rainbow" matches, in which each team is permitted to have one Diamond/Challenger, one Platinum, one Gold, one Silver, and one Bronze. This introduces a meta-strategic element in which teams must decide how to deploy their Summoners, and Summoners must consider how to play their lanes based on their skill level relative to their opponent.

Featured Factions
Factions is organized into storylines, each featuring a different set of playable factions. In this arc, four factions — Piltover, Bandle City, Zaun, and Demacia — compete for control of a powerful hextech energy source, the "dark sand", discovered in Shurima.

Piltover

• Playstyle: "Poketover"
• Storyline objective: Revolutionize Valoran with high-speed hextech locomotives, airships, and other technology

Bandle City

• Playstyle: AoE teamfight
• Storyline objective: Surpass Piltover, refuel the Mothership and voyage to the stars

Zaun

• Playstyle: Tanktown
• Storyline objective: Ascend to power in the wake of the Noxian collapse

Demacia

• Playstyle: All-in "dogpile" teamfight
• Storyline objective: Clamp down on the use of the dark sand to prevent another Void invasion
