Quick Gameplay Thoughts: February 28

Hey all,

Usual Disclaimers

These posts will often contain talk about future work we're doing, or planning to do, that isn't yet guaranteed to ship. The nature of the work could change or, depending on what we discover, projects mentioned may get put delayed or even stopped. If you'd like to see a Tweet whenever a new one of these posts goes up: https://twitter.com/RiotMeddler

Sion

We fixed a couple of bugs on Sion in 8.3, which likely made him a bit stronger. At the same time it turns out we also unknowingly introduced a new bug as well, which is likely adding quite a bit more strength to him than those bug fixes did. In order to address an issue where minions he E'd would sometimes die before the end of the knockback we ended up rebuilding the spell. The rebuilt version was unintentionally set to use a different check to determine what was hit (distance between the E and the edge of the target's model, instead of the E and the center of the target's model). That basically means Sion E is wider than it's meant to be at present, which adds noticeable extra power. That will be fixed in the next patch.

Conqueror

We're continuing to test the new Precision keystone, Conqueror, with the goal of shipping it in 8.6. Been seeing quite a bit of discussion about it and wanted to talk about out a few things with its design:

  • While you do have to be in combat for 4s before it triggers that's not the same as you have to be hitting your target for 4s before it triggers. Like Grasp of the Undying you can prep it by taking or dealing damage (e.g. poke spells or other targets) before getting onto the enemy you particularly want to fight.
  • The true damage conversion it offers is somewhat anti synergistic with champions who build pen or have it on their kits, or have true damage already. Converting a % of your damage to true is much more valuable when that damage was previously getting mitigated at a high rate. If you're got significant % pen/shred already (e.g. Darius with BC and his E armor pen) and/or deal a lot of true damage regardless (e.g. Fiora) you'll be getting less of a damage amp than champs without either. Might still be a good choice, especially if you're facing really tanky enemies, but less likely to be the strongest use case.
  • The delay and the true damage are both there in part to create more distinction from other keystones. To get meaningful choice between runes they need to be offering significantly different things, which can be tricky when their output is just damage. That means creating distinction between damage runes through things like when in the fight they offer damage (e.g. up front versus after a delay), who they're good against (e.g. squishies versus tanky targets versus low health enemies etc), whether they're pure damage or also include some other effect (e.g. healing) etc. Lack of that sort of distinction was one of the big issues with Fervor, given it switched on almost immediately (most of its users could rush its ramp up significantly) and then stayed on while being equally effective against whoever (given it was raw AD).

Longer thoughts on Marksmen delayed

I mentioned a while back I was looking to talk about our thinking on the state of marksmen in detail soon. Going to have to delay that until quite a bit closer to mid-season. We're still working through a lot of interconnected issues there around marksmen and bot lane overall that will need a fair bit more time before we've got some clearer conclusions. Apologies this is taking quite a bit longer than originally hoped.

Some of the things we're looking at:

  • The arms race between champs who build multiplicative damage and multiplicative defense and how that affects champs building a mixture of both
  • The need to be able to kill full tank builds late game
  • Whether the balance of power between marksmen general damage and marksmen tank busting effects is correct
  • How front loaded marksmen damage can get, later in the game especially (e.g. crit + Shiv crit)
  • What stats are needed to make playing a marksmen feel good earlier in the game versus what power's actually needed
  • How much reliable burst mitigation there is available for marksmen, both from supports and from other sources
  • How marksmen power curves compare to other classes and whether marksmen have sufficiently distinct power curves from each other
  • Marksmen wave clear late game (and wave clear in general)
  • Amount of power having decent resourceless ranged damage early game offers (while many champs are still quite mana gated)

Plus likely a few other things that will emerge as we keep working. One of our next steps is going to be narrowing down to a subset of issues, with the goal of making significant progress on some rather than a little bit on everything. We'll also going to need to do some work on non marksmen too as part of our work to open up bot lane more.

I tweeted at you about it, but I was wondering about thoughts on giving champions Adaptive abilities? Those few champions out there who have scalings for both AD and AP who, sometimes, might rather deal magic damage vs physical damage. My champ, Shaco, has a history of being played as both AD and AP. I feel having adapativeness on either his Passive or E, or both, could help when wanting to play him as AP. It wouldn't touch AD shaco, even though I know nerfs will probably be coming out for him, but would touch up AP Shaco enough, to not fully need hard buffs to it.

Hi Meddler!

How are the internal Lissandra tests working out? Lissandra Can we expect some changes in 8.6 or is the timeframe uncertain? Can you give us more details about the tests?

How are the tests for Lissandra changes are going? Is there anything you can share about it?

As far as Marksmen itemization goes, have you determined what the larger issues are? One thing that seems glaringly obvious to me is item 3087, which got buffs to make it one of the best mid-game items in terms of burst, while still keeping the waveclear aspect it once had. One thing that's fairly obvious is that, when combined with Infinity Edge, Stattik Shiv actually out-damages item 3147 at all levels when it crits (even on triple Lethality builds, since Stattik Shiv deals magic damage and champions tend to have more Armor than MR), which seems kind of odd, given that Duskblade is the item designed for single-target burst to begin with.

Blossom Crown2/28/2018, 5:18:21 PM13 votes

Hi Meddler, anything on Syndra?

Syndra's performance prior to the mage itemisation update wasn't too good and has only gotten worse since 8.4.

PeachyBubbleStar2/28/2018, 5:20:09 PM12 votes

Hai Meddler~

I think Syndra might need a buff considering her low win rate and constant complaints i hear about her being rly bad atm(which, personally trying to play her a few times, i can safely say she does need something buff wise). also, has Zoe's bugged Q been fixed on the PBE yet? also, what would you consider average for a champion win rate? some champs below 50 kinda worry me that they're below? specifically 48% & below... Zoe is in a bad spot rn obviously and i hope her buffs bring her back to life.

Smithy2Q2/28/2018, 5:28:34 PM10 votes

You didn't talk about itemization for ADCs, not directly. The community concensus, and it's been here for a while, is that the zeal items are too good for too cheap. Indeed, ADC itemization is cheaper than any other non-support role. This looks like an obvious spot to hit, and adding 200-400 gold on the overall costs of these items seems like a no brainer. Do we really need to go half a season before ADCs get addressed?

I've often thought of the tankbuster niche as something that should be champion specific, by having mechanics like %health on a kit (like vayne) or heavy defense penetration (wukong, vi,etc.).

Is that a direction you see yourself going as giving an entire class of champion that identity as tank buster is what may have been narrowing the choices?

Also, as the premier tower damaging class, I always thought waveclear was an inherent weakness of the class, and specific kits would sacrifice power to gain access to it (sivir, and should be trist but right now she's pretty dominant so it seems she's not sacrificing enough power there) also that shiv and such shore up that weakness so well that it's not really seen as such.

Is waveclear as an adc weakness something you see pushing more for in the future? (potentially, not looking for a commitment)

EDIT: please Meddler, this is something I've been asking about for a while and if my thinking on this is off-base I'd really like to know. I understand you may not be able to give any concrete answers, but I'm just wondering if it's a direction even worth exploring so I can put my brain to rest on it.

Any plans for Soraka or Sona?

1meatsqueezer2/28/2018, 5:20:17 PM9 votes

Any thoughts on syndra? Since the ap rework her power level hasn’t seemed to change (maybe even lower). Her winrate and play rate have dropped significantly since the rune rework since the domination tree(the one you would want for bust mages) doesn’t work well with her kit and comet is not reliable with her stun pushing opponents out of the aoe area most of the time.

I think something should be looked at for her, even more so now since other mages with higher win and play rates are getting more attention than her for some reason (looking at your ahri and viktor)

Guardman2/28/2018, 5:13:22 PM7 votes

Just wanted to say hi. I played against you in a game on Sunday (I was the mid Jhin). It was really exciting since it was the first time I knew I was playing against a Rioter.

redniwediS2/28/2018, 5:11:59 PM6 votes

When you look at marksman are you going to be looking at the strength/need of kiting vs the strength/need of chasing? A lot of stuff that helps one also helps the other, and it can lead to situations where some champions that are supposed to have a zone of threat (aka Juggernauts) can almost literally have circles ran around them.

It's good for a squishy ranged carry to have tools for maintaining distance, but when they have tank busting tools to boot it can lead to a situation where slower champs cannot catch the carry, run away from the carry, or survive their damage until help can arrive.

“We have some really promising exploration for Gnar potentially coming in a future patch that we wanted to put in 8.4 but didn't have time to properly validate. It's intended to be a set of win-win changes to make Gnar's gameplay feel more fluid and rewarding but also give him more windows of opportunity to use against him and in general make playing against him a more interesting/fun experience - can't say more than that but personally I really like the direction. It's currently looking unlikely we'll get to it soon but I'm hoping we'll manage to get it in a future patch at some point.” -Riot Endstep https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/Js0ngspm-patch-chat-with-the-playtest-team-84?comment=00430000

“Gnar - Needs clearer weaknesses enemies can play around, particularly in lane. Details also TBD.” -Riot Meddler https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/Zuwx8vlW-quick-gameplay-thoughts-february-2

Can you tell us anything about the direction that was explored for Gnar? Also, if Gnar ever got a small rework, would it be possible to move Hyper to his ult passive and give him an active W?

REKT Dat Ashe2/28/2018, 7:19:05 PM6 votes

Hey there meddler, Was just curious if there has been any talk about the state of Syndra now with the whole poke meta shift and her lower win/play rate?

Kazekiba2/28/2018, 5:36:07 PM5 votes

Please for the love of all things decent and reasonable, nerf Shiv's single-target damage. It outdamages every other Zeal item, even though Rapidfire Cannon is supposed to be the "Single target" damage item while shiv is just for wave clear. if Tristana is building Statikk, something is inherently wrong with the item.

Swarovsko2/28/2018, 11:21:02 PM4 votes

Hey Meddler is Syndra ever gonna receive a little bit of attention? Please even a "I don't know" is fine... This champion is one of my favourites and seeing her still sitting at a 46% win rate breaks my heart a little. Please I don't want her to receive the Viktor treatment where she's neglected for a whole season/many seasons because she was dominant during pro play for a season. I picked her up after months yesterday and she feels so bad to play... W range, mana costs, cooldowns, even her damage.

Spideraxe2/28/2018, 5:08:19 PM4 votes

Hey Meddler can I ask what patch the midseason patch will likely fall under.

Pokemonred2002/28/2018, 5:09:17 PM4 votes

What ever happened to the Restoration passive on Hunter's Talisman? Was it deemed too weak/too strong? It still makes me sad that Hunter's Talisman's mana regeneration does not function in the river, the dragon pit, or the baron pit at all, while Hunter's Machete gets full benefit from all of its passives in all of these scenarios.

Mordepool2/28/2018, 5:27:09 PM4 votes

I'm so thankful your looking at Marksmen and asking the right questions

PandaNator432/28/2018, 5:56:14 PM4 votes

Its really fun to hear you thoughts on marksmen (or any topic), even if your thoughts aren't conclusive. Problem Solving is fun, and its fun to see how Riot is problem solving some of the hot topics in the game. Absorbing your game design insights and theory crafting solutions is just as much fun as playing the actual game :)

Hópe2/28/2018, 6:09:17 PM4 votes

No Warwick nerfs? Are we going to pretend hes not at a 55% win rate as a top 5 most played champ? This guy is impacting every single game too highly, I understand the LCS is running right now but seriously, why are we not nerfing Warwick??

Lord Desert2/28/2018, 5:16:24 PM3 votes

A very technical question regarding Marksmen and their Crit-builds: Did you guys modifiy the C value of the PRD algorythem? Especially, if you introduced a mechanic to lower the inital crit value after crits in a row?

I would love to know that, if possible. It is sadly basically impossible to test for those things by myself, I tried it :/ This serves the purpose to create a fairer crit system/rng, while it still beeing random!

Thanks in advice :D

Xyntios2/28/2018, 7:31:24 PM3 votes

Hey Meddler,

first thank you for keep informing us about the stuff behind your team etc.

Secondly could you give some thoughts about the changes on PBE for Tristana? You told us you want to lower her power a bit, but in my opinion scaling up her range in lategame and higher her Rocket Jump damage is not really lowering her power at all. She got an incredible good all in in lane anyways and often is a bully anyways. With higher damage on her all in the range won't matter and she will burst you even harder. On that point I wonder why u guys don't look at her Rocket Jump interactions. For me it seems a bit unnecessary, that Tristana can buffer her Rocket Jump in nearly every situation. For exemple I saw it several times that she jumped out of a Warwick ult while being surpessed. That just doesn't feel right for the Warwick player when he hits the crucial ult and it also seems like too much safety for the Tristana player.

Hope you could give me some insights on this one and thanks again for keeping up your great work.

Electro5222/28/2018, 7:39:36 PM3 votes

Did you guys ever try Conqueror on ADC's during testing? I'm fairly certain you did, since you specifically want this rune to be a weak choice on the likes of them.

However, I can see 2 ADCs that may really like it, that being Lucian and Kalista.

Lucian because he's just a brawly ADC. He's not bursty like MF, and no hypercarry like Twitch. He goes in, and dances around the battelfield, all while dealing as much damage as he can. Thats why I can see him taking Conq, since it will help both in his 1v1, and generally in teamfights as well.

As for Kalista, it's all about her Rend. She already likes to stick around in prolonged fights to get as many spears in her targets as possible, and once she has enough spears stacked up, with Conq proc'd, the true damage conversion would make her Rend hit even harder than it already does.

What do you think?

Jmman2/28/2018, 7:09:20 PM3 votes

Are you happy about fiddle's current situation?

After the "buffs"?

https://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/stats/fiddlesticks/platinum = 49.3% jungle, 48.8% support, 47.6% mid

http://na.op.gg/champion/fiddlesticks/statistics/jungle =49.12% jungle, 50.52% support (yes is this korea only)

http://champion.gg/champion/Fiddlesticks/Jungle? = 48.8% jungle, 50% support

So you took 53% win rate mid and it dropped to not event playable. (guess that was the plan because we all warned you) .8% increase in support, and roughly 1% increase in jungle. Was this worth killing the only position that had a 50%+ spot. Then think about all the Mains that have a lot of games that are struggling to get a good winrate with him.

You know I have played this game from the start. Look at the other buffs you handed out to other champs. You own us at least a explanation on what the plan for fiddle is. Because it looks like support only now. He isn't a "high skill champ" as you say with others. So there should be no reason for the low win % unless he is just weaker. Fiddle is still the WORST TIER for junglers. Why do other champs get buff to at least make then good at where riot wants, then nerfed to balance, but fiddle never is. I have played 1000's of games on him. But every time I pick fiddle now, i'm decreasing my chances to win. You say you want diversity but you can't event make him good at the jungle. Can fiddle gank a lane at level 3 while they are lvl 2 and stub stomp them.... no... is fiddle tankish.... no.... Cant fiddle quickly punish the other junglers mobs if they gank or out of position.... no...Maybe you don't understand what is making the jungle good. Fiddle has sustain for the jungle.... well you added it to everyone so that isn't a strength anymore. Heck a lot of champ clear faster with more hp and don't use mana.

My question is are we going to have to wait another 2 or 3 years just to get looked at to be nerfed and called a buff. Because honest I would give the ult Timer back (event thought it was way out of line with the other ults and should have been more of a creep fix than buff) for the %damage to minions back. All the fiddle feed back..... do you look and see what champs they play? Most of them have no games played on fiddle.

edit: every time I see all the 53% plus win rate champs and then look at the play rate, it honestly tilts me that you killed fiddle mid and "no comment" of the others.

Whether the balance of power between marksmen general damage and marksmen tank busting effects is correct

I'd like to point out three degrees of freedom in this assessment. Those being damage to tanks, damage to squishies, and damage to objectives. Bear in mind that turrets having armor means these axes are not orthogonal and is making this assessment more complex for yourselves.

Winterkill2/28/2018, 7:20:11 PM3 votes

Karma

Sitting at a 47.33% win rate. What are you doing to improve her, Meddler? You keep talking about the same things and not addressing the elephant in the room for five years now. I have called out you and many other Developers for your band-aid fixes for Karma the past 5 years. What are you doing to make Karma a cohesive champion, more unique, to fix unfinished animations and parts of her theme that you couldn't be bothered to complete? What are you doing to bring back her old theme and kit if you are not willing to do the actual work to make her new theme and kit work?

You are making all these rectifying changes to other champions but Karma remains in the state she has been in for 5 years now because you cannot be bothered to work on her, talk about her, talk among your peers about her, and more.

Here are some ideas since you cannot be bothered to do your job.

Passive - Give Karma a better passive that plays off of her theme as the Enlightened One or through a Twin Dragon concept.

Q - Make Karma's Mantra Q like Lux's and make the explosion damage heal any ally inside of it and do more damage late game.

W - Bring back Karma's clothesline mechanic through Mantra so she can interact more with her allies. Remove the healing she gains from her current Mantra W.

E - Have Mantra E be shield bomb when it is cast on Karma but the current version of Mantra E when it is cast on allies. Give Karma back the one ability that was iconic on her and that Ricklessabandon removed to make her a stat check shield bot.

R - Move Karma's current passive here.

OMG MEDDLER! I Did your job for you. I gave you a completely unique idea for a champion that has nothing and is more cohesive. You want to know what that is? A battlemage with interactive abilities on allies. It's something we don't have in the game right now and it was something Karma has previously before her botched VGU that no one on your team can be bothered to talk about or work on. I look forward to the .25 shield increase on Karma's Mantra E though . . . . because putting a band-aid on a problem is a much better option for you than doing hard work that already existed.

Triumphant Glory2/28/2018, 7:22:06 PM3 votes

Can Garen get some buff like Darius got? Some minor cd reduction or base or ratio buff? He isn't doing so great lately. Also is there any chance that Garen could get Q animation increased in speed? It feel clunky as the game goes on and it feel bad to use. W lockout during his Q is also a problem.

Thoughts on the jungle landscape in Pro Play/Normal Play now that Tracker's Knife has been gone for about a week?

How has it effected Lee Sin's performance so far?

Will we ever see a jungle ward item/a new smite upgrade to give us more options than Red or Blue Smite?

onionsan012/28/2018, 6:30:11 PM1 votes

why would you still nerf rzye wiht his 43% winrate?!
