Thoughts on the juggernaut reworks: Where we're up to after 4 weeks

RiotMeddler··91 votes·40,779 views

Hey folks,

Wanted to provide an update on our thinking about the recently reworked juggernauts. Initial post from a week post launch here:

http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/GzunkiGw-initial-juggernaut-thoughts

Overall the juggernauts have definitely been too strong (our bad). Making comparatively immobile melee effective is something we've had trouble with in the past, which in retrospect's lead to us putting too much power into this group. We have been seeing some distinctive play generated by each of the reworks though, which hits on one of our primary goals for this work of making different characters have distinctly different effects on the game. Fairly optimistic we'll see that continue once we've got balance into the correct spot, though won't count those chickens before they hatch of course. What we're thinking for patch 5.18 below, with a few longer term thoughts mixed in.

  • Garen: Garen did turn out to be too strong as initially suspected. The mobility nerfs in 5.17 have helped with that, we still feel he's a bit strong at present though. Next major change we'll be doing in 5.18 is making it so that people no longer generate Villainy stacks by killing Garen himself. Biggest impact there is that you won't get punished for killing Garen in lane, which in some match ups makes it really hard to get a real advantage in lane against him (or even turns what should be a winning action into a losing action).

  • Darius: Went from significantly weak to too strong with the hotfix and buff in 5.17. We're nerfing him in 5.18 as a result, giving Q a scaling mana cost and reducing the amount he heals per target hit by Q (with an increase to the max possible healing). Goal there is to nerf his healing overall, in lane in particular, while allowing some big moments still if he can catch 3 enemy champions with the blade. Longer term we've also been talking about whether straight % missing health is the correct model or not for Darius' heal, given how much a tanky Darius can heal for. It's possible we'll shift towards a flat + missing% model instead at some point, still discussing/waiting to see how the 5.18 nerfs impact him.

  • Skarner: We were pretty happy with how the hotfix hit Skarner, since it dropped his power substantially without going too far and leaving him too weak. He's still too strong, so we'll be following up on him as well in 5.18, with a nerf to his E slow, reducing the power of his ganks in particular.

  • Morde: Now that the dust's settled somewhat it's pretty clear Morde's significantly overpowered as a farming duo laner, and very weak as a solo laner. We'll be nerfing Morde's base Armor, W healing and W damage (no longer deals double damage when overlapping, base damage increased somewhat). For solo Morde W's going to be self castable for the healing effect (though not the damage). Expectation is that we'll need to do more to Morde in follow up patches as well, though as usual we'll see what effect those changes have first.

  • Bonus items section: So far Deadman's Plate, Titanic Hydra and Sterak's Gage are looking pretty reasonable. They're doing the right sort of things on the right sort of champions. No current changes planned for them as a result, though we're still keeping a clear eye on them of course as builds continue to get tested and refined.

Finally it's also worth noting that since 5.18 is the patch World's will be played on we've been putting a lot of focus into how the juggernauts are performing in professional play (since balance tends to be somewhat different between normal games and organized 5s, high skill level 5s especially). The recent LPL games have been played on 5.16 with the hotfix, which has been a useful data point for us in assessing juggernaut power. We've seen Darius and Skarner picked there (Skarner much more than Darius), both looking strong, though not overwhelming so. No sign of Garen isn't surprising (the nature of his kit's a better match for solo queue). No Morde picks or bans is a harder one to interpret. It's possible his weaknesses are such that an organized team can just shut him down, or that he's new enough teams haven't had enough time to drill into his changes yet, so aren't interested in picking him for now even if he's theoretically strong (I'm personally in this camp, though definitely not 100% certain about it).

You can buff AD Ezreal a bit more if you like.

why does Riot feel so much urge to make juggernauts a thing. no one asked for this to be viable, they are so boring to play and play against. bring back assassin meta at least they are squishy and skillbased.

The adc mains will bitch about being oneshot tho,,, Oh wait, they cry about every meta :/

Tank meta: "I can't kill him and he deals too much damage!" Bruiser meta: "Nobody peels for me and they kill me too fast!" Assassin meta: "I can't do anything I just get blown up when I walk out of base!" Mage meta: "This is almost as bad as the assassin, since they can CC me to keep me from kiting!" Support meta: "My supports are too stupid to peel for me right! the enemy ADC got fed first!" ADC meta: "I can't play my main role because everyone keeps first picking ADC and banning my favorite champs!"

I must not be the typical ADC main, i culdnt give a shit for most metas, infact i actually like he tank meta the best because with that meta you can itemize to tanks, its simple to me anyways, and i dislike the assassin meta the most cus you cant itemize against being 100-0 even if you sit in middle of your team sometimes, the rest idc as ther is still means of itemization and positioning to deal with them

Woah, it's almost like Riot created an entire role that most people don't enjoy playing in most metas.

Well, the underlying Problem with duo lane Mordekaiser, and the sole reason why his solo and duo win rate's so grossly unbalanced, is the fact that his entire bot lane dominance relies on him having over the top stats and gaining levels faster than his opponents. It's this hidden power allowing him to completely stomp the enemy bot lane due to him getting ahead simply by cs'ing. This is not only an unfair advantage he gets simply by putting one point into his W but also serves as the band-aid holding this rework together for him to succeed down in bot lane.

Which brings me to my second point; In SOlo lanes his weaknesses are SO glaring that he gets simply destroyed with no ways to play safe and escape ganks/push out lanes by himself. He gets completely obliterated by any range top laner and a gank's usually fatal.

Bot lane all his weaknesses get overshadowed with the help of a support, providing him peel, engage, cc, heck, he has NO weaknesses when paired up with a support, and herein lies the problem.

As I already mentioned in the millions of Mordekaiser threads I put up you should try and balance him as a champion and NOT on this gimmick, because it's not only unhealthy but limits his potential as a champion

Galeo6 votes

They already eliminated one of the most toxic aspects of his pre-rework solo lane experience; His constant harass shielding him against any form of retaliation and making him turn ganks in his favor. They reduced his shield gain and his major poke tool (E) was nerfed significantly. I see no reason for them NOT to make him fir into top lane since his duo lane's way too unhealthy imo

Rew7114 votes

I still fear getting close to him, especially as an adc with both tons of AS and/or crit. Its not fun. If they're support is good, he will always land his third Q, which can take from 1/3 to almost all my health (early to late). He's the first ADC I've ever seen to have a heal in his kit. And all he really needs is health because his kit doesn't really need any help, all except for the passive which you can continually make stronger and health also negates his cost. Its not like he's in solo lane having to survive with his one heal and iffy Q; he's down usually in bot lane now where he doesn't even need to attack until someone gets close.

Malicious Metal8 votes

This is exactly what's wrong with the current Mordekaiser. His solo laning sucks since he doesn't have the tools to succeed there and with the help of a support to cover up ALL his weaknesses he can simply Huehuehue Roflstomp the opposition. It's not only unfair/Unfun for the enemy laners but it's solely based on him being overpowered and reliant on his gimpy experience gain passive.

On the topic of his Q though; In top lane; the home of tanks and other bruisers his Q damage's being migated by their tank stats, making it pretty balanced up there but using it against squishies results in him obliterating them.

The rework's got some pretty great ideas, the way he's currently being handled seems a bit icky though^^

The hell it is, I was a tank Shyvanna, and no, not the BotRK first then tank shyv. I mean the Sunfire, Visage rush Shyv, and he STILL shit on me, even as far as flash Q at level 9 to take a full 1/3 of my hp with ult and even HE was surprised at how much he did since I was rushing hp/mr stats.

SwimyFish2 votes

I mean just play Gnat adc. Instead of getting punished due to your short range per usual in bot lane, you now have a range advantage, very easy time kiting, high kill pressure when you mega evolve, and can beat morde in a 1V1 at all stages of the game. Even better, your teams adc can now land a 5 man stun. Adc problems solved.

Taigongwang3 votes

Yeah. The three main reasons that duo lane Morde is OP are glaringly obvious. A: His big weakness solo is nullified(AKA CC). B: Double Relic Shield Exists. C: All the the mechanics that he has to make him powerful bot lane(W passive and Dragon Force). One of these points cant be fixed, the other two can. Morde Bot lane like this isnt going to work in the long term, and Riot NEEDS to realize that. IF they stick with Morde the ADC, we lose a great champion in identity and gameplay for at least another year while we wait for another rework.

CertainlyT had great ideas to shake up the game, but he used them on a rework instead of making an entire champion around them. This killed some of the identity Mordekaiser has, and makes him potentially even more unhealthy for the game. Not even close to the best way to use those ideas.

Jaghatai23 votes

So - now you have to balance Mord like and ADC which is going to make him even worse in solo lanes... Can we just have our old Mordekaiser back please? Make a new character to fulfill your bruiser bot lane experiment.

Darius Darius WHAT nerfs??? -_- may i suggest you remove the delay on Q if you nerf the heal even more?also why does Q sometimes isnt activated?(pressing it but isnt being cast) Mordekaiser Mordekaiser so you nerf duo lane mordekaiser,BUT dont buff solo lane??? the nerfed self cast WONT HELP can you please explain other possible solutions you are looking at at buffing Solokaiser? cause to me you are nerfing Mordekaiser both duo and solo lane Mordekaiser

Expectation is that we'll need to do more to Morde in follow up patches as well

the changes to Morde's solo lane on his W are horrible. His W will offer a whopping 10 hp sustain, unless you build AP (which, last time i checked, you reworked him to want to not build a whole lot of).

Hello item 3152, my old friend.

Decrit11 votes

I see Juggernauts as a kind of tanky melee carries: while master yi and fiora have a great mobility, catchup potential but get blown up fast, juggernauts are slow but have somewhat similar dueling power ( not the same damage output, but sorta the same capabilities to duel ) and still not many ccs.

I loved this update, even if the numbers were a bit wonky ( i actually found Fiora to be an harder problem than them tought ) and with a bit of more balance behind it it will be a very good addition to the game; especially Mordekaiser, if he will get again W self castable and gets his power spikes a bit more tame it will be the best rework among these 4 imho.

I still think Garen is way to fast the 5 movement speed nerf really wasnt that much... because he abuses these item 3071 item 3009 item 3742

Slamurai Jack10 votes

I think lots of people massively misunderstand what item 3742 does. I see tons of people complain that it removes juggernaughts weakness of being kited but all it does is help them get in. Not to mention the MS boost can be knocked off by any CC at all.

I don't like this duo lane Mordekaiser. Old Morde was better.

Jacknife8 votes

Glad to see you're keeping on top of this and actually communicating with us on how things are. As far as Garen goes, I would cut the numbers on his E, but make it so he gains the added true damage from Villain at max rank, so his power curve is a little less random, and he doesn't just burst the Villain of all things super hard.

Darius... I'll admit, I'm happy to see the guy I mained for years finally fully viable, even if he's near permabanned. I'd still like his heal to be based on missing hp, as it's really his only reason to build more tank than damage. Take that away and he'll go back to old darius, building almost full ad and maybe triforce to burst people as fast as possible. The heal is a bit out of control though.

I never played much of skarner, so im no expert, but a lot of his threat (besides the spires), seems to come from his stun. Combined with his ult, if he gets this off he's taking a player out of the game for a good while, all while claw-smacking him to oblivion. Maybe be a bit harsher on the refresh rate it gets?

as for Morde... sigh I can't even talk about him without being sad. He was my only AP top bruiser man... he really was my numero uno...

AdanChristo7 votes

worlds is going to be boring again with pros picking the same f'ing champs over and over :/ oh and fiora will be nerfed by 5.18 so no Fiora at worlds.

Miraweave5 votes

PLEASE nerf Titanic Hydra. The ratio on the active is just way, way too high. Offense that scales with defensive stats is a really dumb idea in general, and putting it on an item with a 10% total health ratio is stupid.

Oh. Morde being gutted even more. Not surprised.

Can Mundo get a buff please?

There's no real reason to play Mundo now that Garen and Darius do the whole immobile juggernaut thing better than he does. I remember back when Mundo used to be THE late game juggernaut. However, now that most champions have effective means of killing him I feel like he just doesn't offer much anymore.

Slamurai Jack7 votes

Mundo is still definitely far more mobile than the juggernaughts and far more tanky as well, althought the juggernaughts do tend to encroach on his territory. I still play Mundo to fairly solid success, although I would argue that the prevalence of Vayne and the strength of Botrk hold him down more than anything.

KenazFenix5 votes

I just played Morde solo lane on PBE...and he's still garbage. Restoring his ability to self cast W (without the damage, wtf?) is nothing more than you guys attempting to placate a subgroup of fans that you have royally pissed off. It's a hollow gesture and an insult.

What I'm seeing is a lot of the old school Morde players upset that he is now useless in solo land and a lot of bot mains pissed off because he's overpowered. What you have basically done is taken a champ that was impossible to balance in one lane (because Old Mordekaiser being overpowered was dependent on play style) and made him impossible to balance on TWO lanes. GG Riot, GG.

R.I.P Mordekaiser You deserved better

GelsominoKiller4 votes

I really appreciate those kind of posts by rioters. All hail Meddler, our supreme overlord.

Garen: the change you proposed in this topic is highly needed, since getting an advantage against him often means losing the lane in the end. My feeling with him it's that you NEED to take care of him, but he's so tanky that often this commitement results in a lost teamfight. You can't ignore him, yet focusing him loses you the fight. Plus, if you focus him and fail, it's a disaster, since he will be back for cleaning thanks to his passive. My opinions is that he drags away a lot of the opponent team's resources in the form of cc and peel, without committing much on his own (he just pops W and keeps going). This is bad expecially when he's ahead. Maybe his E dmg scales too much, maybe the slow cleanse should be on his w, i don't know.

Darius: i'm no expert here, won't speak.

Skarner: in the eyes of a skarner lover like myself, this rework was a missed opportunity. I think right now he's more manageable, and generally heading in the right direction balance-wise, but i really wish that you took more time into making him unique and awesome. Like, as an example, making his E cast like viktor's laser, because, well, because it's hella cool. And i wanted cool, unique interactions with your zones, like hitting E on the crystal creating a rupture, or Q generating an earthquake... instead of those dull (but effective) steroids. I also expected zone control minigame to be much more relevant and gameplay impactful, a bit like altars on the Twisted Treeline. Right now you only take them when you're there, no planning involved. I'd like them more if they could be locked for 1:30/2:00: this would create intresting and unique interaction between the junglers ("do i risk going in enemy territory to deny skarner his zone?" "do i want to take this altar to pressure the enemy jungler?" "there will be a dragon/baron soon, do i lock now or later?").

Mordekaiser: again, i'm no expert. You have a lot of good, thought-out feedback by many morde players like Malicious Metal. My suggestion is to look forward to it. My opinion of this rework is that he's been forced into a viable (now op) botlane carry by nothing but questionable steroids, invisible power, and overall not-so-creative changes. His matchups are extremely binary: playing the wrong bot against him leaves you deeply unsatisfied and disappointed, just like you could do nothing but lose in this situation. Again, a missed opportunity: Morde is a champ with strong personality, but weak identity. His gameplay is old and trivial (yet it holds a lot of potential), and his looks outdated. He COULD BE MUCH MORE. He's the perfect candidate for a Sion-level rework, he needs it! But what we got is this rework, which did not solve any of the problems above, alienated the playerbase and resulted into a huge balance issue. While i love the other reworks, i strongly dislike morde's... forgive me for being brutal, but imo it's simply BAD.

Saminus Maximus4 votes

In my opinion the main reason garen and darius are too strong are the new juggernaut items fixing all their problems. Specifically deadmans plate and the new bc. Eg, darius walks into a fight q's a minion and is now barreling at your team with an extra 130 movespeed. Their dominance against other melee's is ok considering that's what they were supposed to do but when they run that fast no amount of mobility will save your backline unless they manage to jump over a wall, sometimes not even then. Lower the mobility on deadmans plate and/or nerf the slow and you should be able to actually kite them again. Which is the intended weakness of the juggernauts.

My thoughts on Huedekaiser:

His Q and the Dragon ghost were the only changes I liked about this rework. The fact that he has to have a duo partner to perform properly is really sad, and feels terrible. You have this big hulking death machine who now relies on an ally to even do anything. It just doesn't seem right, and it certainly does not feel fun to play him like this... Please return him to being a solo laner! I used to main Mordekaiser, he was my go-to champion, and my favorite champion of all time to play... Now he just isn't enjoyable for me to play, and I just hate it. You have taken a fun, classic champion, and turned him into some kind of experimental monster at the cost of his entire identity. It was neat to try making a bot lane duo melee champion out of him, but it just doesn't work in this game. Mordekaiser is too immobile(+no CC) while being a melee champion, this combination will not ever be healthy for the game if it is able to work in place of an AD carry. If you try to keep him as a bot lane champion, he will eventually be nerfed to the point that he is unplayable. Please return him to a solo lane champion so I can go back to playing the champion I once enjoyed playing so much.

Singed,

A long time Mordekaiser main

I feel as if the new items need a small amount of balancing, here are my opinions, if anyones interested:

Steraks Gage: Its Ok VS burst but its worth less than other items, making it a somewhat waste of an item slot, Ive found that whenever the enemy had enough damage to proc its passive they also had enough damage to kill me, so maybe add a few more base stats to make it a bit more worthwhile to pick up, or buff its active a bit.

Dead Mans Plate: Ive found that its a really powerful item, its stats are much better than a lot of other items while its passive is really powerful, movement speed is a somewhat hard thing to build and I think 60 is a bit much, the extra damage is also unrewarding as id rather keep my 60 movement speed rather than slow for 1 second and a bit of extra damage, in my opinion the discharge should be buffed, the movement speed lowered and maybe lower the stats a bit (100 HP maybe?)

Titanic Hydra: Its passive deals pretty low damage and its active hits like a truck, but has a massive cooldown, maybe lower the active damage and cooldown and up the passives damage?

anyways these are just my opinions and suggestions.

Feast or famine is fine for solo que but morde won't make it to LPL because of that alone Pro's pick reliable. Morde is not that. My hope with continued work is that he will be

Edit: Sion level rework may be required. Lots have asked for it. But will see in 3 years maybe

RexSaur3 votes

@Meddler just to correct you, the lpl games were played PRE-hotfix.

Which means the PRE BUFFED ''very weak'' darius was seeing competitive play, so i can imagine him being pick and ban even in 5.18 if those are the only nerfs planned to him.

Honestly the Q heal is completely out of charcater and should be scrapped, darius needs other weakness other than ''just 1v5 kite him in a team fight'', someone building 5k hp and healing for 800 per Q while having the damage to kill your whole team is terribly toxic for the game, the fact that hes actually getting compensation when he might aswell be one of the most broken champs in the game atm is hilarious.

Or atleast his base stats that are sky high and q damage needs to be tuned down, juggernauts would be much more balanced if they were actually WEAK in lane (like singed is for example), since they now SCALE UP to late game.

Sire Hippington3 votes

Scale up into late? Darius starts with 63% in 0-25min games, dropping down to 49% at 40+min, thats the second highest winrate drop over gamelength in the game! Garen also drops just as he did befor the rework Morde starts at 75%win in under 25 min, dropping down to 47%at 40+ min, so the highest drop ever seen in league! even scarner drops a bit later on, though his more tank like kit keeps him more relevant lategame. (source:http://champion.gg/)

And they played with hotfixes in lpl, don't know how you would think they didn't...
