What Do I Build On Kai’Sa?

RiotJag··1 votes·57,698 views

Hey guys, I’m Riot Jag, the lead Gameplay Designer on Kai’Sa. I’ve seen a lot of confusion on what type of role, playstyle, or build she’s supposed to have, so I’m here to provide some context and some advice.

First off - Kai’Sa is intended to be a versatile champion. The goal is for her to have multiple roles, playstyles, and builds. So, I’d like to give a bit of context on each of her abilities and how they achieve this. Always remember that you don’t need to upgrade every ability every game, and most cohesive builds will evolve no more than 2 spells.

Ability breakdown

Almost everything on Kai’Sa’s kit scales directly with an offensive stat. Let’s talk about each ability in detail.

P (Caustic Wounds): Magic damage, scales primarily with AS and AP. Kai’Sa’s passive is the backbone of her damage output in most of her builds. In a conventional ADC build, she’ll probably do about 65% of her total champion damage as Physical Damage, and around 35% as Magic Damage, primarily due to the very strong AS scaling on her passive. Almost every build will get a lot of value here.** Her passive is also one of the biggest reasons she’s extremely strong as a bot laner - pair her up with a CC monster like Leona or a Thresh and you’ll have some awesome kill lanes as they ramp up her passive stacks for her**.

Q (Icathian Rain): Physical damage, scales primarily with AD and CDR. It has AP scaling, but since it’s Physical Damage, it’s much more likely to have value in builds that include Essence Reaver item 3508, Infinity Edge item 3031, or Duskblade item 3147. If you’re playing an Assassin style with Lethality, this is your bread and butter.

W (Void Seeker): Magic damage, scales primarily with AP, AD, and CDR. Most builds will always get some value out of W (especially since it accelerates your passive), but AP builds scale this spell harder than anything and it becomes your primary nuke if you’re starting out with items like Luden’s Echo or Lich Bane. This also has plenty of punch with Hybrid builds that utilize Hextech Gunblade item 3146 or Guinsoo’s Rageblade item 3124.

E (Supercharge): Scales primarily with AS and CDR. It’s important to note Attack Speed purchases scale down E’s cast time and scale up the MS it gives, making it feel super good with items that give that stat. Items like Blade of the Ruined King item 3153 or Statikk Shiv item 3087 really shine with a build that pushes to upgrade Supercharge first.

R (Killer Instinct): Shield scales primarily with AD, AP, CDR. Not much to think about here, just don’t build tank and you’ll get good value out of the shield. The AD ratio gets much better with level, so AD Kai’Sa builds will get better shields that can actually absorb a Critical Strike from an enemy ADC that has also reached late game.

Few other tips: -Kai’Sa has some of the worst level scaling in the game in terms of offensive base stats (her AD and AS per level are extremely low), but her item scaling is extremely potent. Most item purchases will scale you up quite well, as long as they’re offensive (if you’re thinking about Tank Kai’Sa, just don’t!). -Lifesteal is always a good purchase for ADCs with short attack ranges, and Kai’Sa is no exception. Blade of the Ruined King item 3153 is a great item for ADC builds because it gives Kai’Sa a bit of everything she needs (AD for Q Evolve, AS for E Evolve, lifesteal, dueling potential). -Some penetration items may be correct on Kai’Sa depending on the game, but since her damage profile is fairly mixed, it’s usually better to look at other items. Critical Strike becomes quite potent in conjunction with a few rankups in her E since the stats multiply quite well.

I’m happy to answer further questions here, but my main hope is that people will have a lot of fun exploring their favorite build path on Kai’Sa, as opposed to me telling you exactly what to do. Good luck!

it really does disappoint me when people are like " you need to build this, this, this and this on kai'sa and nOTHING ELSE! "

she's supposed to be the embodiment of versatility and creative playstyle, build what you want!

Qiyana Hime23 votes

Many items are good on her, but as a carry, if all you want is the highest DPS possible (as is often the case), there are some builds which are simply superior to others mathematically.

SzGamer22711 votes

There are other aspects to her various builds that have a significant impact on the success of a champion though, especially one that is built to scale well with a large variety of items. Different combinations of these attributes will feel better for certain players than to others and be successful in different situations.

More specifically, I feel like Kai'Sa is going to be of a similar vein to Kayn, in that she starts off with lackluster abilities but can dramatically increase her power in specific ways based on how she builds and plays. Using Kayn as an analogy, assassin players would obviously lean to assassin Kayn when learning the champion while bruisers will lean to Rhaast, but a serious Kayn player becomes comfortable with both and uses that versatility to their advantage.

Assuming her various itemization paths are all balanced with each other, Kai'Sa will potentially appeal to a broad number of players who will approach the champion in different ways, but someone who learns the champ and plays Kai'Sa optimally will be able to go into each game with a plan and an idea of which build will produce the best results. They'll be able to decide whether they need a build that gives them the strongest dueling power, or the best objective-taking time, or the best burst, slipperiness, anti-tank, waveclear, whatever they might feel is most important to that game. Maybe maximizing DPS is the right choice. Maybe it would be better to burst down a priority target. Maybe maximizing map pressure will be the best route.

TL;DR: If Riot pulls off Kai'Sa correctly, her build path isn't going to simply boil down to what has the best stats, but instead what will give her the most success when playing into whatever specific situation she faces.

ihero41 votes

I can give an example of this. AD Kai'Sa is best for early game I find, and if you are just going even or under in gold, going AD gives her the best chance to recover. However, I find that if you can get ahead, and avoid losing trades early with her you can build ap and attack speed and really destroy anybody late game in exchange for a weaker early game. If you are stacking a lot of ap, your passive chunk becomes huge enough to kill anybody as long as you can avoid heavy cc, which your evolved e can do for you with smart timing.

Hey Jag first of all, i like your thoughts on Kai'Sa and think she will be fun to play. Second thanks for your time spending on this board, explaining to us how Kai'sa can work.

Last but not least i have to agree Monster Mode and Stronk Boi. 2 years ago you made a comment about Shaco. I dont ask for changes now, but i do ask may you visit the subreddit ShacoMains? There are lots of ideas and people who love that champ. I think i can talk for everybody if i say, we would love to see you there and giving us some sort of statement.

When will you guys stop calling Marksmens ADCs?

If you want the community to shift to a Marksmen-less botlane, you guys better change the lingo to be consistant. That includes the e-sports team.

Masonick2 votes

It's called an ADC because it is an Attack Damage Carry. It literally just describes what type of damage, and that it can carry late. Not all Marksmen are ADCs, not all ADCs are marksmen. There can also be APC's botlane (ability power carry).

Thorn30001 votes

right right, so I guess good ol' Zed is an adc, since he adds himself plenty of ad to carry no?

From what I've heard each INDIVIDUAL q missile counts as a single target and gets the full healing from item 3146 (rather than the AOE reduced healing). Is this intentional (if this is true) and do you see this interaction being removed possibly if its either too strong or unintentional?

RiotJag11 votes

Changed it so additional ones are classified as DoTs. Still has good synergy with Gunblade but I don't think it's broken. If it becomes too strong I can nerf it but I'm not too concerned.

Inri Sejenus6 votes

Did this change also stop item 3042 Muramana from procing on each of the individual hits?

RiotJag9 votes

Yes.

Rmlthl2 votes

So Death's Dance should work the same way, right? It used to count her missiles as if they aren't aoe so she was able to get a decent chunk of health back, I hope it will stil be the case after your changes.

Also thinking about it you've created a very unique character in the sense that if you are good at Kai'Sa you can pick her agaisnt any comp and build depending on the enemy line up.

DorkunedAuras2 votes

Wait, so is it that the first hit counts as a normal, single target spell and additional are DoTs, or are all hits DoTs?

ProfDrDeath1 votes

What does DoTs in this context mean? Does Gunblade's Omnivamp give reduced healing on damage over time effects?

Because the tooltip only says: "This is 33% effective for AoE damage."

50000000000000001 votes

Area of effect, multi target, and damage over time should all apply 33% healing.

they probably have it as one of things they can nerf if they want to power her late game down a little.

SuperRiceBoi1 votes

Each missile only hits one target, so the damage from each missile isn't AOE. It doesn't seem broken to give each missile the life steal because in context the missiles as a whole would only give like 75 health back.

Hey Jag did being an ADC give you some perspective on how you wanted to tackle making Kai'Sa's gameplay

World Ender3 votes

Hey Jag pretty off topic, but how goes Aatrox?

Quality Content3 votes

How are you going to respond if it's discovered that one build is the most optimal in every scenario? Being a purely offensive champion it doesn't seem unlikely that there will be a build with the best dps and power spikes.

RiotJag7 votes

I think it's a trap using the same common wisdom of "most optimal build" for Kai'Sa, since you can create distinctly different outputs with different builds. Some are better for bursting (Q first), some are better for poking (W first), some are better for outmaneuvering (E first), some are better for focusing tanks, some are better for focusing squishies, etc.

That being said, if people feel like it's optimized one day, so be it. I imagine she'll still be enjoyable.

Votable Jester2 votes

Would you ever consider making her E upgrade with CDR also (so AP builds can at least get that upgrade as well)?

Making two upgrade with adc stats feels kinda bad for those who like AP builds.

McKz1 votes

nashors quinsoos, would get close wouldnt it?

Votable Jester3 votes

You need 100% attack speed. Nashor's is 50%, Guinsoo's is 25-73% (but I'm not sure if top value of Guinsoo's works for the upgrade since it says permanent bonus).

Also it's not like Guinsoo's is a regular AP item, giving only 50 AP without stacks (which is when you'd be poking with W probably).

I just think that for a champion who is supposed to work with multiple playstyles, it seems odd to have 2 of the ability upgrades come from ad itemization and only 1 from magic.

NA Howl2 votes

Honestly I really don't think CDR upgrading is the best way to go.

One of the main ways she scales with AP is through her Passive, which thrives off attacks speed, so keeping her E evolve the way it is makes a lot of sense.

In terms of reaching the 100% attack speed: Guinsoo's honestly is great on her, and if you really wanna push her AP, then Nashor's works well. At that point you just need an additional 25% attack speed, and there are plenty of items that works really well with her. I'd personally recommend Botrk, but if you are really set on getting the most AP possible, Wits End works well. Or you can do Runnan's Hurricane if you want AOE/teamfight damage (Runnan's bolts also apply her passive).

My personal Favorite build goes: item 3146 -> item 3006 -> item 3124 -> item 3153 -> Any AS item you want (Nashor's, Bloorazor if Jungle, Runnan's - all are good)

By the time you have you Rageblade, your W is evolved. By Botrk, your Q is evolved. E is evolved by 4th item.

Gives you sustain in lane early, and decent skirmishing as the game progresses.

Taggerung5592 votes

Just Nashor's and Guinoos can activate the boosted E if you're at least level 15, as it counts your per level AS towards the completion. So that's a thing if you want the boosted E without wanting to go for even berserker greaves.

NA Howl1 votes

Yeah that's probably a better option -- I basically always run Merc's or Tabi's anyways.

Figured I'd throw it in so people dont get all "hurr durr not 100% attack speed"

AMYS GRAVE2 votes

What is the gameplay cost for that versatility? If she can find a place in any comp what are the drawbacks to picking her? What weaknesses does she have that she can't cover through itemization or skill order or etc...?

KindredAndWolf3 votes

Such a great hybrid kit... Why on god's green earth couldn't you have been the lead designer on the Evelynn rework? Kai'sa is awesome and I don't say that lightly since i've done NOTHING BUT COMPLAIN since the Evelynn rework.

Kai'sa is going to be the first fun and experimental champ Riot has released in a loooong time. Her kit makes her the new "Hybrid Queen", a title that used to belong to Evelynn.

So my burning questions.... Why wasn't THIS the Evelynn rework?

What makes hybrid itemization hard to balance (I've heard that Eve didn't keep her ad ratio's because hybrid champs are hard to balance)

Finally What makes Kai'Sa easier to balance hybrid wise when champs like Evelynn and Poppy was forced away from hybrid itemization diversity?

Just want to say thank you Jag. With minds like you in the company I can feel hopeful that the experimental and meta breaking properties of the game are sticking around for a while and playing different builds is encouraged. It's a breath of fresh air. Haven't played since the Eve rework so it's nice to see kits released that are made for tinkers like me.

Khristophoros3 votes

Last I checked she can't refresh Duskblade with her invis due to the duration being <1s. Is this intentional and if so do you expect Duskblade to be a good buy in spite of that?

SanKakU1 votes

She can completely disappear with enough speed, so yes, it should be fine.

MalrothDragonia2 votes

is there a build that allows her to get all her upgrades? Even if the passives on said items don't make sense for her effectively, and what's the power bump like from having all 3 evolved? Also first.

Qiyana Hime3 votes

item 3111 item 3153 item 3124 item 3146 item 3115 / item 1419

Most basic attack DPS, best ability scaling, all skills evolved.

ProvidenceNox2 votes

Are you actually going to support her in multiple roles? Riot has a history of not supporting champions other roles.

1v1 Terror2 votes

If your goal is for burst damage, is it better to go ad or ap? Also in an assassin style build, would you want to still get atk speed items?

RiotJag4 votes

Burst damage at range is better with AP, up close is better with AD.

AS items are still valuable in the assassin build for using the E to outplay imo.

KilIua2 votes

Why did you gut her Muramana interaction? It was high risk high reward build path that I’ve really been looking forward to. Only thing that excited me about the game for the past 2 years. Now I won’t even play her, there’s no my assassiny adc anymore. And no, lethality is garbage on her, everyone knows it. You recommended the duskblade but lethality Kai’Sa becomes pointless after level 13. Cut more options, lets see how versatile she ends up to be.

Steelflame3 votes

It was obviously hilariously broken overpowered is why. You could set it up to do over 2.6k damage on just the Shock proc. That just isn't allowed, it makes her able to 1 shot anyone with an autotargetted Q if she catches them alone.

How come runes that provide permanent stats do not count for the stat requirement for upgrading the abilities like the attack speed from the precision route, alacrity attack speed bonus, or gathering storm?

ihero42 votes

I really do enjoy Kai'Sa right now, and your ability to play around with the build makes it a lot of fun to try and figure out what works best with her. I do want to say though that the e feels really bad unless you rush evolving it first because the charge time is so long, and the cast time for the w makes close combat trading feel REALLY bad. The projectile speed and single targeting for the w makes it a challenge to land and I don't hate that, but the wind up time to use the w makes it almost obsolete unless you go ap and get the w evolve, and even then it feels bad if you try to use it mid fight to get extra stacks. Could you make the cast time a bit shorter? The E I understand can not really be changed much and you just have to get used to it, but the w honestly tends to feel really bad no matter what, and I have a tendency to build Kai'Sa AP and still have this problem...

I love the champion still though, and theory crafting to try and find the best build for what circumstances feels amazing!

Saixos1 votes

One point of AP is worth 21.75 gold. One point of AD is worth 35 gold. 35/21.75 = ~1.61

The scaling on Q is 40% AD 30% AP. --- 1 * 0.4 = 0.4 < 1.61 * 0.3 = 0.483

Q scales harder with AP than with AD.

W scalings are 1.5% AD 65% AP. ---- 1 * 1.5 = 1.5 > 1.61 * 0.65 = ~1.05

Q scales harder with AD than with AP.

Your numbers are off. In addition, E scales far harder with hurricane. Shiv is second worst zeal item on her imo.

I believe that the numbers Kai'Sa currently has result in your suggested builds and Kai'Sa's recommended items to be inefficient and generally a poor choice.

RiotJag9 votes

They function that way to ensure that each build still has good value out of each spell even when building in the other direction. W is magic damage and Q is physical so specific item choices that give both AD/ArP/Lethality or AP/Magic Pen still preserve the optimal spell/build pairings.

Also your W math is quite flawed given that you're not counting the P value.

Erised1 votes

Did you ever at any stage of the design have the ult upgrade? I was thinking it would have been kinda cool if you had 100 IAS, AD and AP if the ult upgraded to do something cool. I understand that it might be busted or too much power but I was thinking it definitely causes you to have to build a suboptimal DPS build to achieve it.

RiotJag3 votes

I did, and I just ended up making it baseline since it made more sense (the shield).
