Quick Gameplay Thoughts: April 25

RiotMeddler··1 votes·28,973 views

Morning all,

We're just a couple of days away from finishing the mid-season patch, so busy times on our parts right now. Bunch of mid-season related thoughts below as a result, once 7.9 is out and we've got whatever balance changes are needed underway we'll also start talking a little bit about future plans again too.

Mid-Season watch list

We'll be assessing the game as a whole post mid-season patch of course, with enough stuff changing that there are arguments a lot of different things, whether they were touched directly or not, might need follow up work. There are some things we'll be keeping a particularly close eye on though, as things more likely to need tuning than others. Examples include:

  • Rift Herald, and whether it benefits early teams too much, generates the desired interesting siege/defense gameplay, how easy/difficult it is to defend against etc.
  • Ancient Coin, particularly the revised pattern's impact on Enchanters and other really mana hungry champs.
  • Adaptive Helm and its effectiveness against champs who rely on repeated spell casts for the bulk of their power
  • Garygoyle Stoneplate and whether it's leaving champs that deal true damage and/or scale damage off HP too threatening
  • Etc

Rakan and Xaya

Seem to be in a reasonable at least for now power wise, so the only likely changes in 7.9 are a few bugfixes. Will definitely need to assess again in a couple of weeks though, see whether their performance stabilizes around an appropriate power level or whether when the average player on them has enough experience they're too weak or too strong. It's also very possible that Coin changes, or AD item changes, have a meaningful effect on them in 7.9. too.

CC Tracking Stat

One of the new end of game stats we've been working on for mid-season is CC contribution. Based off some testing while that's been on PBE it looks like there are a couple of issues with it we'll need to work out though. We'll almost certainly be delaying that to 7.10 as a result, given amongst other things there's some possible impact on server performance there.

Updated Sub-Class List

Something we've been working on for a little while is an update to the sub-class list we posted last year (link to the previous version below). As mentioned we've always expected that would be an evolving set of guidelines/assumptions, rather than a definitive set of rules, a way of looking at/talking about champions rather than a set of requirements. We're now at a point where we think an update's appropriate, should be able to post that sometime in May. Nothing too major, mainly shifting a number of champions around and some changes to one of the sub classes' definition.

Casual Skarner13 votes

when we will see changes for Skarner?

Kobold4 votes

I second this as they have re-categorized him from Jugg to Vanguard

RiotMeddler8 votes

Nothing currently scheduled. He's strong, but not so strong we need to take power off him at present. Spire gameplay's not great, but also not problematic enough to push other champions who need the work more out of priority.

corals8 votes

That's a little disappointing, hopefully the emotional roller coaster skarner players have been on for the past few years will be ended eventually.

Edit: Thanks for responding!

EROTIC RAID BOSS5 votes

surely no changes for a long time would be the end of the emotional rollercoaster.

Crowky4 votes

I appreciate the update meddler. I hope we won't have to wait too long for skarner to get some love. It's less about him being strong and more about being enjoyable to play.

Tormentula4 votes

Who needs more work than skarner? He's been neglected since preseason 6. The last time he ever got spotlight, was when trinity force got changed, but even hecarim put him in the dirt then. Even amumu got buffs this season during a jungle pass to buff underperforming junglers, and skarner was just ignored despite being worse.

He needs a VGU, and I know he's not on the priority VGU list (atleast not the most recent one). Can he get something small? He really needs the rek'sai treatment right now, but can he atleast have some strengths to him? His "objective controller" identity is done better by almost everyone.

ZadloBoze2010PL3 votes

@Meddler Could you please explain me why do you think skarner is strong? In early game skarner with fervor is weaker 1v1 than malphite...almost every champion can kill him 1v1. It's really frustrating....

Legit, nobody want's to know what the Xaya is. I also do NOT recommend anyone to google it, please.

Meddler about the Gargoyle Stoneplate case with true damage, instead of making gimmick changes to it that will hurt everyone so it won't be abused by 2-3 champs, make it an exception and reduce the true damage dealt OR just make it so it gives a shield instead of actual hp (sorry Vandiril), and it would solve the hp scaling problem too.

Glory ln Death3 votes

A shield would possibly be way too strong though. Having it be a health boost means it's essentially just a 50% (or 20%, if there aren't 3 nearby enemies) damage reduction with health scaling. If it were a shield, it would be 100% damage reduction (until you broke the shield).

How about some feedback threads for the new tank updates? Some of us have a lot to say.

Jeddy0174 votes

Yeah, where's the feedback threads for Zac & Maokai?

PeepingPeafowl3 votes

Or have questions regarding the reasoning behind some decisions.

RiotMeddler5 votes

What's on your mind?

Chromatic Eagle3 votes

I imagine a common one is Sej's E. Many feel that it makes her too dependent on melee comps, and useless in range ones. Also there might be too much power in it after removing so much from her ult.

Where do we direct feedback regarding her particles?

TheSingularity5 votes

Is there any chance of zac bouncing more during his ult? I've made the same suggestion in multiple threads and thus far it's been well recieved.

The current single bounce appears very underwhelming and anticlimactic compared to current zac ult.

My suggestion: Update: Zac bounces X times. X=the number of champions stuck in his ult. After each bounce a player is dropped off. Players towards the outter part of zacs channel blob are released before those near the middle (so deposit is based on position not rng).

Zacs bouncing is what made his ult more than just another "malphite ult". It's what made him fun, made him goofy. IT'S WHAT MADE HIM ZAC!

XIII Vanitas3 votes

I don't agree with your proposed changes, but I wholeheartedly agree with the point you're trying to make: Zac's PBE ult isn't as much fun and unique as his current one, which, in my opinion, should remain unchanged.

LankPants3 votes

Why on earth is Sejuani's W physical damage? This just makes no god damn sense from a balance and design perspective. Magic damage better slots her in to a role as a late game team fighter and synergises better with items like Abyssal and Liandry's giving her better offensive build paths.

RiotMeddler2 votes

Feel free to add posts and/or links in here and I'll at least give them a look. In terms of PBE forum threads whether those get made or whether we go off other threads/PBE discussion direct etc's something we leave up to the teams on each update.

Keevalroy7 votes

There have been tons of Maokai threads over the past week, but the consensus from what I've seen anyway is basically "the ult is slow as molasses and isn't going to help him much, the reduction of his defenses leaves him as one of the worst tanks in the game, the passive in the early game is horrible and too strong late game, the E buff is unnecessary, and his W is practically useless now, because at least his current E can be used to scout and provide a slow if someone chooses to run."

In my opinion, he didn't need a rework, he only needed 3 changes all on his W. After his relaunch, he moved from jungler to top laner, and rather than trying to balance them out, Riot pigeonholed him into a Top, and this new rework reinforces that. The goal was to make him less of an issue top, and that could have been solved with 3 easy steps:

  1. Increase the W range.

  2. Reduce damage to players.

  3. Increase damage to monsters.

Done. That way, he can still be a dependable brick wall in the top lane without out-damaging his opponent by building full-tank, requiring him to build damage to deal damage, meanwhile, he can clear a little faster in the jungle since he currently struggles with single targets, and has better gank potential without having to blow Flash on every engage.

If this rework goes through, he's not going to jungle again, and that's depressing. He'll need to use his ult on cooldown for even a slight chance of a gank working, and as has been demonstrated, you can outrun it, meaning he'll only be able to gank if the enemy is literally hugging a wall, or doesn't know what a minimap is. Needless to say, I'm not a fan. I just want my favorite jungler back where he belongs.

Mordepool7 votes

Hey Meddler can you guys list Mordekaiser as a Battlemage/Juggernaut Hybrid. That would be great. Thanks

Jeddy0176 votes

Do you guys have any plans to incorporate the update subclass system into more places such as the the Champion website or the client? You know, spread it around to inform more people of it.

RiotMeddler4 votes

We've deliberately left the sub classes out of the client, they're sufficiently detailed that they're intended to be more an opt in more nuanced thing for those that want it than a primary thing every player needs to be familiar with. Might get them onto the website at some point though certainly.

LostFr0st7 votes

Would it be possible to incorporate them into the champ-select searchbar? Pretty please.

IAmNeverViable6 votes

Here's a couple of questions.

  1. Can we look at Leblanc? I know she was ridiculous after her rework, but I felt she does not do any significant damage after the nerf. Her early game is unnoticeable, and her late game is horrible.
  2. Is Heimerdinger ever get notice? In preseason, Banner of Command and zz'rot got nerf, resulted in nerf to split pushing top donger. The only good build that somewhat works is rushing liandry.
  3. Any changes to look over fiddlesticks? Felt he needs so much stats; CDR, AP, Mana/Mana regen, and Magic penetration. If he's underperforming, can you change to make him less reliance on any one of those stats. Rather just focuses on buying 3 out of the 4 stats.
  4. Any chance on looking at botrk? I think the item is too strong for a first item, too much lifesteal and dueling potential. I think it's a must buy for adc bot lane. This has the same problem back in season 3 with bloodthrister.
  5. Lastly, what with the udyr changes? What does do changes change anyway? Why change it the first place?
DarkPh0enix4 votes

Hi Meddler

Long time fan

Are there plans for changes to Rengar and Garen (mostly buffs) ?

Rengar was hit hard by the nerfs and even tho Garen received a fairly smart change, he is still no match for other juggernauts and divers.

Thank you for your time.

RiotMeddler8 votes

Nothing currently planned for Rengar.

Garen we'd like to do some more small work on (I'm personally particularly interested in trying to make his W a bit more engaging/skill expressive). Timing on that's really unknown though, beyond sometime this year (could be soon, could be post World's patch).

patmax171 votes

I agree that "get resistances for CS and reduced damage on active" isn't very engaging (and is also less noob-friendly, which garen should be, since it punishes if you can't last-hit efficiently).

What is garen's purpose, his strength, his niche? Maybe he is the best at killing the enemy team's most fed carry, then his W could be something like "reduced damage from the villain". Though being a Demacian, maybe his petricite armor reduces magic damage? He could be more effective against magic damage threats instead of having generalistic defense

EROTIC RAID BOSS2 votes

its a good thing to teach new players the value of CS though

Rengooo3 votes

When you say nothing planned for Rengar, are you refering to buffs/nerfs or any work at all / just in general. This is the first time in ages a Rioter has commented on him :/

riste2 votes

Hi Meddler, if you read this I really appreciate your time. I've played thousands of games in Garen and I'm still struggling to get toward high Diamond or Masters with Garen. In fact, many Garen mains haven't been able to exceed this threshold of low Diamond. Sometimes it's decision making for sure, but we feel like Garen's limitations offer seldom a decent matchup. Although his W has strength lategame, it's absolutely a nonexistant ability in laning phase. This is why if you were to spectate a Garen game in Diamond where the enemy can easily anticipate Garen's approach of attack, Garen loses a lot of trades, even when I know I time my W correctly for example after I see my silence wears off. When a juggernaut simply can't even trade with tanks that are cc oriented like Maokai, Nautlius, and sometimes Zac, you know there is an issue. Even rushing Black Cleaver feels like a losing battle since these above champions, and Shen, who can get Sunfire Cape - punish us even more thanks to the percentile magic/physical damage scaling from the recent addition of 100 health.

Courage of the Collusus is a keystone yet provides greater worth than Garen's W in itself. I'm losing matchups vs a player that has played less than 20 games on Darius, simply because mathematically there is no way to come on top on trades unless Darius refrains from hitting buttons on his keyboard.

The ability has to be reworked. The feeling of fulling stacking your W is nice, but I feel like the lack of skill I basically provide later on in the game (Hit W while going in) is just devoid of critical thinking. I often get 40% CDR on Garen so hitting the ability as much as possible is a no-brainer.

One small idea I had was having like a rounded square barrier with four walls that lasts multiple seconds- Similar to Fiora's Vitals in Grand challenge. Each wall could soak up an amount of damage. The counterplay is enemies positioning to remove one part of the wall, and then they can attack Garen's HP directly. It would be so cool to juggle positioning with a strong shield like that while chasing the villain. This could also encourage actual trading in lane, as if you run in lane, you're backside wall in the shield will be easily broken, but if you stay you could kite to a wall in Summoner's Rift and use the second shield wall. Further counterplay exists when the enemy could flash behind you to expose your backside for a kill, or even Garen flashing himself to get in a position to use his other walls in his shield.

It's similar to Fiora but since they are both Demacian champions, thematically it could work, and by scrapping the always relevant, always spammed Damage Reduction you can give all elo ranges more counterplay in handling Garen.

Honestly it's your call though. But please do not just alter the stats of W and call it a day. Garen has issues trading with anyone with true damage since it basically removes the ability from Garen's keyboard. And since we'll commonly only have the active for 2 seconds, it feels just extremely, painfully weak.

Sincerely,

~A Passionate and deprived Diamond Garen main.

Rengooo1 votes

Damn, thats a pretty legit idea there for his W, I like it aha.

But.. Unfortunately Riot has already made it relatively clear (as far as Riot making things clear goes) that Garen is intended to be a beginners champ. With that sort of mentality in mind I think that puts a massive restriction on Garens capabilities of ever getting anyone beyond Diamond... Just my 5 cents :)

riste2 votes

Thanks for your input. I really do believe an ability like this is a category of simple execution, but it brings depth into combat patterns for those who understand further how to position as a juggernaut. Since hitting the button would activate the shield, I think it wouldn't be any more less simple in execution rather than getting 6 seconds of 30% Damage Reduction. There is an issue with Courage, Garen's W currently in low ELO that the ability has such low visibility, they newer players will get frustrated that Garen is so durable, but it's actually a short window of added tankiness.

But alas, this is my belief that any champion should be brought into viability that Master Tier is possible for them at least. But that's not how the game currently is for quite a few champions.

Why are you guys ignoring Diana?

Erulus3 votes

Literally feeling the same way; she's a champion that doesnt excel at anything in comparison to other champs. There are better assassins (even though shes considered a diver/bruiser) with poke, and escape mechanisms. There are better junglers with good pre-6 ganking ability and clear speeds.

EDIT: But hey hopefully they do something with her at the end of the year with the fighter/bruiser update.

TimX24968B2 votes

I thought she was supposed to be a high reward assassin with lower than normal risk (for an assassin) (AKA a beefier, more reliable akali)

Erulus1 votes

Nope she's considered a diver according to the Riot subclass post, which is ultimately a fighter. Lower than normal risk? Nah, even assassins have escape tools after their class update, so it's all risk. Some of the champions in that pool are: Xin Zhao, Hecarim, Irelia, Aatrox, Lee Sin. All have some type of escape mechanism and/or sustain to make up for the fact.

Ganked By Tilt2 votes

Yeah exactly she has no identity, she's so underplayed :(, I miss her so much. They have to either make her a fighter or assassin right now she's lackluster and they clearly dont want to buff her, which is weird because they buffed kassadin recently :/

OceanicEyes2 votes

Hey Meddler,

Quick question, for the CC tracking stat, will it differentiate between types of CC? So for example, we could see how long we knocked up an enemy, stunned, slowed, etc? And if not, what CC will count towards this stat? Just hard CC?

Thanks for the post on current gameplay thoughts, always enjoy seeing Rioter thoughts on the current state of the game.

RiotMeddler3 votes

Lemme double check on that, we were going back and forth on whether to track slows along with everything else or not.

RiotMeddler5 votes

Ok, slows are included, but counted at half the value of other CC so they don't overwhelm other contributions.
