Quick Gameplay Thoughts: October 20

Morning folks,

Usual Disclaimers

These posts will often contain talk about future work we're doing, or planning to do, that isn't yet guaranteed to ship. The nature of the work could change or, depending on what we discover, projects mentioned may get put delayed or even stopped. If you'd like to see a Tweet whenever a new one of these posts goes up: https://twitter.com/RiotMeddler

Zac stuff in testing

We're trying out some Zac changes at the moment. Goal of those is to make his Q a less powerful spell, through lower reliability in particular, and then buff him in other ways. Possible changes look like Q having less range and a shorter less break distance, but in exchange Q CD starting on first cast, rather than Q2 or expiration, plus a bit more damage on W. Overall goal would be a slight buff.

Looking at AP junglers a bit

We're going to take a look at a couple of AP champs from a jungle perspective, see if we can give them a bit of help. Not sure on timing, given there's some more critical work (runes stuff mainly) that's demanding a lot of work right now, hoping to do some explorations during the next few patches though. That might mean work on AP champs who already jungle, or at least used to in the past, could also mean work on AP champs with play patterns that would be fine in the jungle who just haven't been good enough at clearing historically to do so (e.g. someone like Morg might be a good candidate, Annie given her high reliability when ganking probably not).

Eve Homeguard Anim

No promises, but we're looking at potential ways to include the previous Eve Homeguard animation (link below to a video) as a hidden easter egg somehow. It's not the right fit for her primary Homeguard anim, might be able to get it in in some way though.

Adjusting some skin portraits

A while back we added distinct portraits to the player's UI based off which skin they had selected. One common piece of feedback on those though was that many of them felt too zoomed in, which looked unnatural or just confusing. We've got a round of revisions to those coming as a result, with around half the portraits adjusted so they're noticeably more zoomed out.

Why don't you handle Evelynn homeguard animation like Heimerdinger old walking animation? When she uses e.g. her taunt, the animation she does when she has homeguards activated changes.

Think this would propably be one of the best solutions since players then can see the version they prefere all the time instead of being annoyed because it's a different one. Overall I would expect this solution to make the most players happy*[slayer-jinx-wink]*

That's one of the sort of options on the table :).

Make her only use it when in a game vs a wolf-like champ :P Kindred Warwick maybe Kled MasterYi Rengar

Put the Evelynn homeguard animation as basic walk after penta because with no one to kill she have nothing to hide anymore

Wasn't the point of Zac's update to make his Q and Ult more satistying and needing more skill expression? What's the point of nerfing it back down to unimpactful spell?

This is part of a bigger question I have about jungling champions in general, but could you perhaps take a minute to talk about why +/- damage to monsters and unique monster mechanics aren't used more often in champion/item balancing? It seems like it's a great opportunity to get a lot more variety into the jungle and enable some really cool team compositions -- anything from extra damage to damage resistance to monsters to mana restoration seems like a great way to enable interesting junglers without skewing their laning phase.

My initial thought is because, in addition to possibly adding a bit of extra power in specific situations, those statistics can skew perceptions into believing that champion is INTENDED as a jungle pick rather than simply able to be one, but I'd love to know your opinion on the subject.

I'm thinking specifically about unique possible junglers here -- people like Akali, Aurelion Sol, Diana, Fiora, Illaoi, Gnar, Karthus, Lissandra, Malphite, Morgana, Orianna, Renekton, Rumble, Tahm Kench, Taliyah, Vladimir, etc -- characters who may have the AoE damage or the interesting gank possibilities but don't have the power or the sustained damage to survive clears efficiently (or junglers who need a little jungle edge without a power spike).

Kled can become huge in jungle if just let him gain courage from monsters. Rito pls

Any thoughts on Leona? Mainly Passive wise cause I feel it could be a little more interesting.

FancyKiddo3 votes

Agreed. Leona's always felt like a champion I'd love to see in top/jungle, but with no way to use her passive there, is just a lackluster choice.

50000000000000002 votes

I was going to say her passive is already interesting (attacking together means more damage), but you bring up a good point. I'd love to see Leona top/jungle.

I like the thought of making Zac a little better with buffs but as long as he has that ultimate I don't think Zac will be easy to balance. Simply put, that ultimate holds way to much power compared to his old one. Has going back to the old one every crossed the team's mind?

I like the thought of support other AP junglers. AP junglers have always been kind of in a weird spot and opening the gates on some of them is an interesting idea.

French Inting6 votes

Why do you already work on Zac when Rengar has been in a shitty state since his rework?

Kloqdq1 votes

Rengar needs some serious work to make work, most of which is very difficult to figure out without a full revert. The Rioter that worked on Rengar does honestly believe this was a step in the right direction but he still needs work. How Riot could fix Rengar is really hard to say for sure and I really doubt any Rioter has a clear idea of how to go about it without rushing back to the drawing board like they did last time. They want to take their time and make sure they know what they are doing.

The Ultimator1 votes

It wouldn't take a lot to make Rengar enjoyable again in his current state, like making his Q cancelable by Tiamat (like Renekton's) or even straight-up reverting Q (which would be my preferred option, but I'm sure people will flame me for saying it).

It'd be nice if he even just got a tiny bit of short-term work while Riot works on his rework.

Kloqdq5 votes

The problem is the current Rengar is worse design wise than the old one so they can't really just buff him. They would need to do a sizable amount of work to bring him into a better state.

Most of that kind of work is on hold while they do runes.

If I was going to work on Rengar I would focus him more towards a diver rather than a straight up assassin. He has the Diver tools but no true assassin tools, the ones added just made him toxic.

Winterkill6 votes

The problem is not AP jglers. The problem is AP itemization and no diversity. You have different types of AP champions and you have hardly any options for them to choose from. Maybe if you reworked some existing AP items and add some meaningful new items into the game . . . . . it would help all AP champions and not the AP jglers you somehow . . . . think are struggling. Really. AP itemization is the issue . . . and not the jglers.

item 3089 Needs a buff or something else to it. item 3135 item 3151 item 3020 We need more magic pen options. item 3152 item 3030 Needs buffs or something because no one uses it. item 3102 item 3174 item 3157 Hardly any defensive items for AP mages. item 3124 item 3115 item 3100 Itemization for on-hit/AP assassins is terrible. They really need help. item 3116 Might need a slight buff now because of all the movement speed mechanics and other factors in the game that make it that much harder to catch players now.

The issue is AP itemization and the difference between AD/ADC itemization. They have more options and better itemization. You were told this last year and you gave us two items that have hardly any impact on AP champions and their builds. This is the issue Meddler. AP jglers are not the issue. Your incompetence towards AP itemization is.

Ronin Tamos3 votes

While i tend to agree that AP items need work your statement about item 3152 item 3030 are bs. Ekko, Fizz, Annie and Elise all like item 3152 Aurelion and maybe Kassa item 3030

Kloqdq2 votes

Karthus, Karma, Morg, Tayliah and Swain have used item 3030 as well.

You Are Cute XD2 votes

It's actually pretty good on Veigar too.

Kloqdq2 votes

Yeah that's true. I'd say GLP and Protobelt have a fairly decent size of champions that like the item. The issue is Morello crowding out the options most of the time honestly.

DeadUnborn5 votes

Morgana is already good at jungle clearing with her spell vamp passive xD. It's just that her clears aren't intuitive

Other mages that might be fun junglers could be:

  • Cassio
  • Brand
  • Zyra
  • Lissandra (might be OP though)
  • Taliyah
  • Karthus
  • Ahri (might be OP though)
50000000000000001 votes

How is she supposed to clear? My first guess would be placing down W and using Q on the large monster. If that's the case, I think it's pretty intuitive. Her first clear probably sucks though, with low base damage on W.

Just to add to the list, I think AurelionSol, since he's already supposed to be a roamer Karma, she's already a jungler, just a rare one Lux, especially now that she's supposed to be some covert ops character in lore

DeadUnborn2 votes

It isn't because you have to tank the little creeps in order for them to not get out of the circle, and for the big ones you have to manage your ranges so as to lock them out of attacking you with your snare. Also you'd be surprised at how many people don't know what Morgs passive is XD. Also go test it, she actually has decent clears if you go blue, wolfs, red, birds. Oh and rank w,q,w.

Aurelion would be a cool jungler, however I see a lot of problems for Karma and Lux's clear speeds. Also Karma should not be able to be a decent jungler, her ganks would be too reliable with her W

50000000000000001 votes

Wow, sounds like her clear is more mechanically intense than Lee Sin's clear.

DeadUnborn2 votes

hmmm I think you are confusing the word intuitive and intricate.

Hügö5 votes

Soooooooo... still no thought how to bring botlane back in line?

leaguewut4 votes

In my opinion the weakness with AP junglers is the lack of separation between AP items. AD jungle can build a bruiser-like build. ROA doesn't work because of its slow start, Liandry's is meta for everyone, Rylai's is rather niche right now (out of necessity), and protobelt has needed balanced around midlaners as well.

To improve AP junglers, I think there needs to be something in favor of certain bruiser AP items for junglers. Maybe Liandry's burn gets augmented (and a minor one gets added to Haunting Guise) against monsters if you've recently applied one of the echoes procs (which in turn no one builds both except AP junglers), then slightly nerf the AP on the item to compensate.

Morning Raven4 votes

AP Junglers? Interesting for both traditional and new comers. I'd like to see how that might go. I've heard of AP itemization work happening in the early season. I estimate by the time you guys get to the AP jungers, they'll overlap in tie frame. How might the two effect each other? Are there plans for having both in mind?

RiotMeddler2 votes

Pretty early days on both. Possible we ship item changes before kit adjustments or the other way around. Wanted to mention it now though in particular since we might throw some stuff on the PBE soonish and figured the context would be useful if so.

A slight QoL request for Eve. Could hate spikes be activated automatically by holding the ability button down instead of having to individually cast every spike? Of course players would still need to have the ability to cast them individually.

  1. will we see the new champ soon?
  2. will edge of night ever be reworked?
  3. when is that level cap/blue essence change coming?
Radiant Seraph3 votes

New champ probably revealed next week, and the level cap/blue essence thing on preseason

T8 Speedwagon5 votes

Historically, when meddler says "i don't want to cut off on champ reveal team work", the new champ gets revealed the next week.

As usual I'll leave new champ teasing and revealing to the champion team.

No plans for Edge of Night at present.

Level cap, blue essence changes etc should all be at the start of pre-season (probably November 8th, though that could change of course).

Hey Meddler, hope your day is going well. Two questions I had about Eve:

1.) Considering Eve’s struggling with closing the gap between her and her target, is there a reason the balance team prioritized damage buffs to her E instead of buffing her base movespeed or giving a small buff to her E and empowered E?

2.) Is Eve even an assassin? She honestly plays more like a slightly more bursty skirmisher. She’s not at all bursty in the same way tha Kha’zix or Rengar or Talon are as true assassins?

RiotMeddler3 votes

We think she's closer to an assassin than any other subclass, agree she's got some skirmisher aspects though certainly. We're cautious about giving her too much target access given her permanent camo post 6 and access to hard CC on a basic spell, both of which are not strengths other assassins (who do tend to have significantly better gap closing) have.

You Are Cute XD8 votes

Q as a skillshot for range and waveclear, W as very conditional and telegraphed hard CC, E as a short range gap closer, R as damage and escape tied together.

Is new Evelynn just a different version of Ekko ?

TheHappyReaperz2 votes

Not really. Eve's Q is more so for upfront burst damage, and it is all about how fast one can mash Q, after that first skillshot, to stab people with spikes. Ekko uses his Q for waveclear as well, but he has to wait for the extra damage on the rewind. Eve's W is a far more offensive spell than Ekko's W, since its hard CC with shred, as well as single target, instead of hard CC and shield, that's AOE. Eve's is a short ranged gap closer, while Ekko's is actually pretty long ranged, in comparison, 225 to 750. Finally, Eve's ult is damage and escape, or an engage tool, while Ekko's is damage or escape, or a free teleport. While the champions have their similarities, they are very different.

The cost of the perma stealth as it currently exists is just too high when you compare to champs with stonger, shorter-duration stealth.

Either the stealth itself is too weak or permastealth comes at too high of a penalty to damage and mobility.

First they make Zac a CC bot with no damage, now they want to make his Q useless like his old Q and give him damage xDD

How is Zac getting buffed ahead of Volibear. The balance team has gone mad

The Ultimator2 votes

Zac is just getting minor changes whereas Voli needs a VGU badly, imo. Why they picked Irelia (who isn't in anywhere near as bad of a spot) over Voli, Nunu, and Morde is beyond me.

leaguewut5 votes

Irelia's healing is weird, her "balance" is difficult to balance, she's got minimal teamfight potential unless built against her identity, and doesn't do very well right now into most tanks or splitpushers.

FlashDoubleDash3 votes

Actually she does well into most tanks and splitpushers (irelia is hard to counter, just because she is so stat-checky) but ye she is hard to balance, due to the fact she has one of the most reliable ways to scale into midgame and having one of the strongest midgame spikes (lvl 9 and 11 are very powerful spikes for her), and her kit does just not feel thematic. Also, her E is a really bad design in the sense that it stimulates not dealing damage to irelia which promotes bad play patterns and is a big issue imo, but that play pattern doesn't even matter anymore if she gets enough stats, because u simply can't play safe enough against irelia (prob one of the longest gapclosing's when she has tri-force for toplane)

TheOnlyJoe3 votes

It's because they don't just pick a champ and start reworking them. Their team is constantly comming up with things and if they find something that works out well then they'll focus on that. In this case Irelia
