Quick Gameplay Thoughts: March 3

Hi folks,

Usual deal, bunch of things we're thinking about right now below. As usual, this isn't a comprehensive 'everything going on' list, just stuff good to talk about today.


Click to hit spells and FoW

Our intent for single target, click to hit spells is that when they're cast they reveal the caster if they're in FoW/brush. That gives a bit of extra counterplay (against the champion, not necessarily the spell itself) to those abilities and improves clarity of what's going on at the same time. We've got a fix for Jhin Q in the next patch that makes it so that he is now correctly revealed on cast as a result. Mentioning this in particular since if anyone's aware of any other similar spells that don't have that reveal attached a mention of them would be much appreciated so we can give them a look, see if they should.


Lucian Changes on PBE

Figured it would be good to touch on these briefly since I don't know if the exact details have been datamined properly. We've got some buffs in for Lucian that target his cast times and consistency of action chaining as follows:

  • Q cast time now scales from 0.4s down to 0.25s by Lucian's level (was 0.35 flat previously)
  • W cast time is now 0.25s, LoL's standard/default cast time, rather than 0.35
  • Post cast lock on both Q and W should now be able to be consistently overridden by other actions (attacks, movement, spell casts) rather than sometimes requiring multiple clicks on a target, clicking to move then clicking to attack etc.

Players reported for differences in playstyle versus their team

Linking this post from WookieCookie yesterday for anyone interested that didn't see it. Short version is that our rules and approach around how trade offs between unusual/experimental gameplay and team interaction get handled need refinement. We'll be looking at that internally next week, hopefully be able to bounce some ideas off you folks soonish after.

Spirit Guard Udyr Audio Fixes

We've got some fixes for some broken (not playing) audio lines on SGU. Not sure if those made the upcoming patch or if they'll be in the one after, yesterday was lock day for 7.5 and uncertain if they made it into before the lock or not. Looking back through Udyr's file history it looks like this is an issue that's cropped up multiple times for him. Along with making it so the lines play as they should we're also looking at a better structured way to call those lines in the first place so this doesn't happen again.

Meddler, could it be possible to look into the Karthus audio bug that is very similar to Spirit Guard Udyr's taunts? All special lines for Karthus (items purchased, first movement of the game, ward placement) are mute, and he only speaks his movement, spell and autoattack quotes. It's been happening for three patches now, and it'd be really nice if you looked into it.

Will we ever see voice updates for champions that already got reworks/mini reworks (LeBlanc,Fiora,Shen etc.) to make them feel more alive or modern?

I know Infernal Nasus is supposed to have voice lines for reaching Q stack milestones, but they never play. Small thing I'd love looked into if you guys have time <3

Please do a post about supports. What are your plans to make the role more interesting that isn't about buying items that has a passive attached to it that gives more passives to allies? Most of the enchanter supports have the same type of gameplay, build the same items, and sit in the back and press one button. I don't understand why you are saying the champions and itemization are not the issue. The itemization is not very interactive and the champions are not all that special.

I definitely wish the blue stealth tint could apply to all champions when in a bush, and go away when you (or an ally) reveals you by casting.

Can I have your thoughts on LeBlanc nerfs currently on PBE? How do you think that nerf will affect her gameplay?

I also read on rickless' Twitter that you're planning to give her some "assassins update follow up"; when can we expect it?

Meddler Aatrox is coming out next week right? Just asking cuz I am new to the Dev Corner. And is Mordekaiser high on the rework list? I am asking cuz I think that everybody considers the Mord rework a huge screw up and I am wondering about your opinions on Mord aka NUMERO UNO. And if you do rework him would you change his model too? I like Mord but he is kinda silly with the bulky design and the pizza feet, just wondering would you make him less bulky and more slim? For comparisons sake I am asking would you go less Sauron and more Witch King with Mordekaisers model update, if he ever gets it. Thanks in advance.

Hey just wanted to leave a comment saying I love these posts you've been doing lately please keep them up! I was curious also because im not sure where else to but is it possible to get the older Vods of your design streams from twitch on to youtube or something? i found myself wanting to listen to the Yorick one and noticed they aren't on twitch past a certain point. It would be nice if they got made available on youtube for longevity

hey meddler, i know your probably sick of talking about the aatrox changes but i have a question if you wouldn't mind humoring me. the pbe notes i read say that the ap ratio on aatrox's e was removed and the damage was made physical, i have a couple of friends who enjoy playing ap aatrox and are very upset about this, but i understand that its much harder to balance mixed scaling champs. that being said, when malzahar was reworked recently they mentioned that they were making an effort to maintain his more unique playstyles along with the traditional ones (shout out to aquadragons ad jungle malz) and i was curious if there are any plans to preserve ap aatrox in future iterations/reworks? if not, how would you justify eliminating ap aatrox but still making jungle malzahar remotely playable? and if there isnt yet any plan regarding his full scale rework yet, do you think that allowing for both an ap and ap playstyle would be prohibitive or unsustainable necessarily?

im very curious to hear what you have to say (reposted from a comment reply for visibility)

Quick Question: is that Aatrox mini-rework set in stone yet? I feel as though not many people approve of it and I personally feel as though you guys are wasting a lot of creation potential that his vague lore provides. Simply cutting him up as another re-hashed demon-warrior feels like another unfinished job where he'll be left alone for another several years, which is something I'm worried about

Not sure if this is what S7EFEN posted, but Meditation is bugged. The magnitude of the first 3 points are 10x stronger than what they should be.

Regarding the Support Nunu Case I think Riot is playing too much of this parents which leads to people live this 'I will report you to riot and they will ban you' mentality and thus increasing toxicity. My stance on this is that Riot should take a step backwards and leave the game to the players. After all League of Legends exists for more than 7 Years without those interventions by Riot. There have been and there will be toxic players always. The biggest effort should be to not make it more toxic by those extreme interventions. Even punishing toxic players triggers them already. And when they get banned, they make a new account and are toxic to the new players and so on. We should try to be the positive part of this chain not the accelerator.
